In recent years, as nano scale structured thin film technology has emerged in various fields such as the materials, biomedical and acoustic sciences, the quantitative nondestructive adhesion evaluation of thin film interfaces using ultra high frequency scanning acoustic microscopy(SAM) has become an important issue in terms of the longevity and durability of thin film devices. In this study, an effective technique for investigating the interfaces of nano scale structured thin film systems is described, based on the focusing of ultrasonic waves, the generation of leaky surface acoustic waves(LSAWs), V(z) curve simulation and ultra high frequency acoustical imaging_ Computer simulations of the V(z) curve were performed to estimate the sensitivity of detection of micro flaws(i.e., delamination) in a thin film system. Finally, experiments were conducted to confirm that a SAM system operating at a frequency of 1 GHz can be useful to visualize the micro flaws in nano structured thin film systems.

Thermal barrier coating (TBC) is an essential element consisting of a super-alloy base and ceramic coating designed to achieve long operational time under a high temperature and pressure environment. However, the top coat of TBC can be delaminated at certain temperatures with long operation time. As the delamination of TBC is directly related to the blade damage, the coupling status of the TBC should be assured for reliable operation. Conventional studies of nondestructive evaluation have been made for detecting generation of thermally grown oxide (TGO) or qualitatively evaluating delamination in TBC. In this study, the ultrasonic C-scan method was developed to obtain the damage map inside TBC by estimating the delamination in a quantitative way. All specimens were isothermally degraded at $1,100^{\circ}C$ with different time, having different partial delamination area. To detect partial delamination in TBC, the C-scan was performed by a single transducer using pulse-echo method with normal incidence. Partial delamination coefficients of 1 mm to 6 mm were derived by the proportion of the surface reflection signal and flaw signal which were theoretical signals using Rogers-Van Buren and Kim's equations. Using the partial delamination coefficients, the partial delamination maps were obtained. Regardless of the partial delamination coefficient, partial delamination area was increased when degradation time was increased in TBC. In addition, a decrease in partial delamination area in each TBC specimen was observed when the partial delamination coefficient was increased. From the portion of the partial delamination maps, the criterion for delamination was derived.
Due to the high temperature and pressure, the materials of pipeline in power plant are degraded by creep damage. So far, many conventional measurement techniques such as replica method, electric resistance method, adn hardness test method for creep damage have been used. Among them, the replica method has mainly been used for the inspection of components. But this technique is restricted to the applications at the surface of the objects and cannot be used to material inside. In this paper, the measuring methods of evaluation by using ultrasonic attenuation and electric resistance for the creep detection of creep damage in the form of cavities on grain boundaries or intergranular microcracks were carried out. Absolute measuring method of quantitave ultrasonic attenuation technique for 1Cr0.5Mo material degradation was analyzed for determining the creep degradation steps using life prediction formula. As a result of measurement for creep specimens, we founded that the coefficient of utrasonic attenuation was increased as the increase of creep life fracton(${phi}c$) and the decreasing rate of wlwctric resistance was also increased.

Nonlinear acoustic effect has been considered as an effective tool for the evaluation of material degradation. In this paper, the applicability of nonlinear acoustic effect to the evaluation of degraded 2.25Cr-1Mo steel is investigated. Firstly, artificial aging was performed to simulate the microstructural degradation in 2.25Cr-1Mo steel arising from long time exposure at $540^{\circ}C$. Secondly, ultrasonic nonlinear parameter was quantitatively measured by bi-spectrum and power spectrum. Nonlinear acoustic parameter from bi-spectrum was found to be clearly sensitive to the aging time.

In this study, an investigation of shear wave ultrasonic technique was carried out to detect stacking orientation error for CF/Epoxy quasi-isotropy composite laminates. The ultrasonic shear wave is particularly sensitive to ply orientation and layup sequence in tire CF/Epoxy composite laminates. In the manufacturing of composite laminates, it is important that layup errors be detected in samples. In this work, an effect was mack to develop shear wave techniques that can be applied to composite laminates. During testing, the mast significant problem is that the couplant conditions do not remain the same because of its changing viscosity. The design and use of a shear ware transducer would greatly alleviate the couplant problem. A pyramid of aluminum, with isosceles triangle (two 45o angles) sides, was made to generate shear waves, using two longitudinal transducers based on an ultrasonic-polarized mechanism. A signal splitter was connected to the pulser jack on a pulser/receiver and to the longitudinal transducers. The longitudinal transducers were mounted with mineral oil, and the shear transducer was mounted with burnt honey on the bottom as a receiver. The shear wave was generated at a maximum and a minimum based on the ultrasonic-polarized mechanism. Results show it is feasible to measure layup error using shear wave transducers on a stacking of prepregs in composites.

The feasibility of Y(z) curve method of scanning acoustic microscope using high frequency transducer was experimentally studied for assessment of the thermal degradation in Co-based superalloy. Thermal degradation was performed to simulate the microstructural changes in Co-based superalloy arising from long term exposure at high temperature. Longitudinal wave velocity measured by pulse echo method using 10MHz transducer and leaky surface acoustic wave (LSAW) velocity measured by V(z) curve method using 200MHE transducer were measured to investigate the effect on thermal degradation. Ultrasonic velocity decreased as the aging time increased in both ultrasonic waves. Moreover, the low frequency longitudinal wave velocity decreased a little. Otherwise, the high frequency LSAW velocity drastically decreased up to a maximum of 4.7% at the aging time of 4,000hours. A good correlation was found between LSAW and Vickers hardness. Consequently, V(z) curve method of SAM using high frequency transducer could be a potential tool for assessing thermal degradation.
Performance demonstration with real flawed specimens has been strongly required for nondestructive evaluation of safety class components in nuclear power plant. Specimen has been designed to produce mechanical fatigue flaw with tension stress and fatigue flaw has been produced to control stress and cycle, for suitable roughness. Notch condition is considered for control of fracture mode. After seal welding for fracture surface, final welding was performed to complete flaw specimen with GTAW(Gas Tungsten Arc welding) and FCAW(Flux Cored Arc Welding). It was demonstrated flaw size of flawed specimen by radiographic. testing and ultrasonic testing.

Generally, butt welds with plate thickness $30{\sim}40mm$ are welded with groove angle $40^{\circ},\;60^{\circ},\;70^{\circ}$, etc. In the detection of internal weld defects, oblique testing with single probe has been mainly used. But, recently, in acccordance with enlargement of welded structure, thick plate with 100-200mm are frequently required. Thus I-groove welding method was lately developed and often used. In this case, most frequently generated defects are the lack of weld penetration and incomplete fusion between base metal and welding material. If we would detect by oblique testing with single probe, detecting flaw is occassionally impossible or very underestimated. In this study, the limit for applying tandem method was studied in dise and band type flaws. The estimation of flaw size could be within 10% error compared to real flaws.

The relationship between the EFBH (Equivalent Flat-Bottom Hole) size measured by non-destructive method and the actual size by destructive method in many rotors manufactured at Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co. Ltd. was investigated. In this investigation. "the Master Curve" compensating the differences between UT reported sizes and actual sizes of defects in our rotor forgings were obtainable. The applicability of this "Master Curve" as a way of calculating the actual defect size was also investigated. For the evaluation of rotor forgings, it is expected that this "Master Curve" may be used to determine the accurate actual sizes of defects.

The main disadvantages of destructive testing methods are the delay in obtaining test results, the relatively high cost of testing, and the lack of reproducibility in the test results. As a result, nondestructive testing methods are generally used. There are three objectives in this paper. The first is to determine the equations of the compressive strength of concrete estimated by Schmidt hammer technique, ultrasonic pulse velocity method and combined method respectively in laboratory. The second is to determine the correction factors according to the concrete age which affects most in evaluating the compressive strength of in-situ concrete. The third is to examine the applicability of the equations to evaluation of the compressive strength of in-situ concrete structures.
