  • Using Mach-Zehnder type intensity modulator, we stabilized a 10 GHz harmonically mode-locked dispersion-compensated fiber ring laser using a feedback controlling system, and we measured its stability. The laser was stabilized for more than 16 hours by controlling the cavity length to suppress the relaxation oscillation frequency component which had caused the laser output instability. The ms timing jitter and ms amplitude noise were measured to be 260-524 fsec and 4~11.5%, respectively, and BER test measurement showed a value of 10$^{-13}$ .

  • Although there are many numerical models to simulate fs laser ablation of metals, no model can analyze the ablation phenomena over a wide range of fluence. In this work, a numerical code for simulating the fs laser ablation phenomena of metals has been developed. The two temperature model is employed to predict the ablation rate and the crater shape of metals using phase explosion mechanism in the relatively high fluence regime. Also, the ultrashort thermoelastic model is used for the low fluence regime to account for spallation of the sample by high strain rate. It has been demonstrated that the thermoelastic stress generated within the sample can exceed the yield stress of the material even near the threshold fluence. Numerical computation results are compared with the experiment for Cu and Ni and show good agreement. Discussions are made on the hydrodynamic model considering phase change and hydrodynamic flow.

  • We have demonstrated the wavelength tunable ultrashort pulse fiber ring laser proposed the novel method for measuring the cavity loss from relaxation oscillation frequency and the pump power. To suppress the polarization instability the laser cavity is configured with polarization maintaining fibers and to control the center wavelength a 2.4 nm bandwidth tunable wavelength filter was inserted in the cavity. The laser has 8 picosecond pulse width, 10 GHz repetition rate and 1.2 mW average power in 1530-1560 nm operation range.

  • We report 400 femto-second highly stable, nearly transform-limited, pulse generation at 10 GHz in $1540{\sim}1550$ nm wavelength region by adiabatic soliton pulse compression of an actively mode-locked fiber ring laser output. Without using any supermode selection device, supermode beating noise has been suppressed below -123 dB/Hz, resulting less than 100 femto-second timing jitters at the noise band of $1\;kHz{\sim}100\;MHz$.

  • Recently, analysis of transient Raman backscattering in a plasma reported(2.3) that it is possible to reach 10$\^$17/ W/cm$^2$ for 1 micrometer wavelength laser pulse with a counter-propagating pump pulse. The basic mechanism is like this : whorl the two counter-propagating waves in a plasma satisfy the condition of Raman backscattering, w$\_$0/ : w$\_$1/ + w$\_$p/, energy is transferred from the long pulse to the short pulse via three wave interaction(4). • Physical fundamentals of ultrashort femtosecond lasers are addressed along with emerging applications for precision manufacturing and metrology. Femtosecond lasers emit short pulses whose temporal width is in the range of less than a picosecond to a few femtoseconds, thereby enabling extremely high peak-power machining with less thermal damages. Besides, the broad spectral bandwidth of femtosecond lasers constructed in the form of frequency comb permits absolute distance measurements leading to ultraprecision positioning control and dimensional metrology.

  • The real time autocorrelator has been developed in order to measure the pulse widths of ultrashort laser pulses using the SHG method. The scanning range of the autocorrelator is 142 ps, and inserting a delay block in one arm of the autocorrelator, the scanning range can be extended to 250 ps. The shortest pulse width was measured to be 20 ps, when the cavity length was well matched to the RF frequency of the mode-locker, and broadened to be 39 ps and 47 ps as the cavity length was detuned.

  • The two-photon stereolithography (TPS) process is a promising technique for the fabrication of real three-dimensional (3D) nano/micro-structures via application of a femto-second laser, In TPS, when a near-infrared ultrashort-pulsed laser is closely focused onto a confined volume of photocurable resin, only the local area at the center of the focus is cured. Therefore, real 3D microstructures with resolution under the diffraction limit can be fabricated through a layer-by-layer accumulative technique, This process provides opportunities to develop neo-conceptive nano/micro devices in IT/BT industries, However, a number of issues, including development of effective fabrication methods, highly sensitive and functional materials, and neo-conceptive devices using TPS, must be addressed for the realization of industrial application of TPS. In this review article, we discuss our efforts related to TPS: effective fabrication methods, diverse two-photon curable materials for high functional devices, and applications.

  • The present study investigates numerically nonequilibrium energy transfer between electrons and phonons in metal thin films irradiated by ultrashort pulse lasers and it also provides the temporal and spatial variations of electron and phonon temperatures using the well-established two-temperature model(TTM) on the basis of the Boltzmann transport equation(BTE). This article predicts the crater shapes in gold film structures, and compares the results by using two-dimensional energy transport equation. From the results, it is found that nonequilibrium energy transfer between electrons and phonons takes place, and the equilibrium time increases with the increase of laser fluence. On the other hand, above threshold fluence the ablation time doesn't change nearly with increasing fluences. Compared with one-dimensional TTM, it also reveals that the temporal distributions of electron and phonon temperatures at the top surface estimated by using two-dimensional TTM have a similar tendency. The results show that two-dimensional TTM can simulate the crater shape of metals during the irradiation of femtosecond pulse lasers and the absorbed energy is propagated to z-direction faster than to r-direction.

  • Recently, the developments in generating and amplifying ultrashort optical pulses $(ps=10^{-12}s or fs=10^{-15}s)$ have imposed on great advances in the time-resolved laser spectroscopy. Especially, the transient absorption spectroscopy has a wide application range and the main idea of this technique is pump & probe method. After the pump pulse makes the material an excited or a transient states, the probe pulse is sent through the material to measure the absorbance change due to the transient states. Here, if the absorbance change was measured by the time delay between pump & probe pulses, the dynamic information of the excited or the transient states (the transient abnsorption changes by time & wavelength) can be obtained. At our laboratory, the ultrashort optic1 pulse (
