A series of Ni-Cr-Mo alloy steels were austenitized, quenched to martensite, and tempered at various temperature and time conditions. Tensile testing was conducted at room temperature with cylindrical specimens, and hardness was measured using Rockwell hardness tester. In the tempering stage I, high strain hardening and yield strength accounted for the high ultimate strength and hardness. In the tempering stage II, strengths and hardness linearly decreased with increasing tempering temperature. Specimens tempered in the temperin stage III showed incipient discontinuous yielding and tensile strengths only slightly higher than yield strengths. Ductilities decreased slightly in specimens tempered in the tempered martensite embrittlement range, and severely decreased in specimens tempered for 10 hours at $500^{\circ}C$ in the temper embrittlement range. Specimens tempered at $600^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours showed recrystallized microstructures, a number of fine dimples, and increased strain hardening, probably due to the precipitation of alloy carbides. The simple formulae for the mechanical properties of these steels were suggested as a function of carbon content and Hollomon-Jaffe tempering parameter.
In superconducting power devices including power cables in which high temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes are utilized, a reliable electrical insulation should be achieved for its maximum performance. For an efficient design of HTS superconducting devices, a comparative evaluation of the mechanical and thermal propperties for various insulation materials at cryogenic temperatures is required. Especially, in the process of the property evaluation of the sheet-shaped insulation materials, anisotropy according to the machining direction should be considered because the mechanical and thermal properties are significantly influenced by the sample orientation. In this study, the cryogenic thermal and mechanical properties of various insulation material sheets such as PPLP, Cryoflex, Teflon, and Kapton were determined considering sample orientation. All samples tested at cryogenic temperature showed significantly higher tensile strength as compared with that of room temperature. The ultimate tensile strength at both temperature conditions significantly depended upon the sample orientation. The thermal properties of the insulation materials exhibited a slight difference among samples depending on the orientation: for the PPLP and Cryoflex, the CD orientation showed larger thermal contraction up to 77 K as compared to the MD one. MD samples in PPLP and Cryoflex showed a lower CTE and thermal contraction which made it more promising as an insulation material due to its comparable CTE with HTS CC tapes.
Unpredictable failures can occur due to the DHC (delayed hydride cracking) or the degradation of fracture toughness by hydride embrittlement in CANDU pressure tube which can result from the absorption of hydrogen or deuterium in the high temperature coolant. To investigate the hydride embrittlement of CANDU Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube, the transverse tensile test and the fracture toughness test were performed from room temperature to $300^{\circ}C$ using three different specimens which have an AR (As Received), 100, and 200 ppm hydrogen. As the amount of absorbed hydrogen was increased, the transverse yield strength and the ultimate tensile strength were also increased. In addition, as the test temperature became higher they were decreased linearly. While, at room temperature, the hydrogenbsorbed specimens represented the embrittlement which resulted in sudden decreasing of fracture toughness, the fracture characteristics became ductile such as AR specimen at high temperatures. Through the observation of fracture surface using SEM, it was found that the stress state of mixed mode could be related to the fissure which was believed to decrease the global fracture toughness.

Severe cracks on Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures caused by structural displacement can be often one of the main reasons for the degradation of tensile and flexural rigidities of RC structures and for the deterioration of durability and serviceability of RC structures through accelerated steel corrosion. These combined factors adversely affect the performance of RC concrete, leading to shortened life time of RC structures. In consideration of these problems, we conducted 3 point bending experiments by employing three different types of concrete specimens: fiber-net reinforced concrete (FNRC), polypropylene-fiber reinforced concrete (PFRC), and plain concrete (PC). FNRC is well known for its strong corrosion resistance, light self-weight, and excellent tensile strength, while PFRC is known to be effective in crack control. FNRC was found to have the best first and final crack resistances followed by PFRC and PC, as evidenced by the highest initial crack load and the smallest final crack width, respectively. The FNRC specimens with various tensile strength of fiber net exhibited greater ultimate strengths than those for PFRC and PC. Furthermore, the crack widths of FNRC specimens were smaller than those calculated by the crack-width estimation equation of the KCI and ACI code. Therefore, we conclude that fiber net reinforcement is effective not only on crack control, but also on loading share.

The study was conducted to evaluate reliability of the longitudinal tensile properties of unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced composites. Two kinds of carbon fiber reinforced composites laminates were tested in order to examine the factors of variability and have the information concerning reliability improvement. Temperature dependence of the strength and its variability were investigated by means of testing at two kinds of temperatures. Statistical distributions of the respective mechanical properties were obtained from the tensile tests. As a result, strength of composites was directly proportional to the ultimate strain and was not proportional to the elastic modulus. The fracture behavior in bending of notched plate was studied for a composite material. The uniform bending tests of notched plates have been carried out for a wide range of notch radii. The experiment shows that the nominal stress at failure decreased with decreasing notch radius and it approaches a constant value when the notch radius is less than about 0.3mm. The critical maximum stress is governed by notch root radius alone in the case of a constant thickness of specimen.

Austenitic stainless steel is used as high temperature components such as gas turbine blade and disk because of its good thermal resistance. In the present investigation, tensile and low cycle fatigue behavior of 316 stainless steel was studied at wide temperature range $20^{\circ}C{\sim}750^{\circ}C$. In the tensile tests, it was shown that elastic modulus, yield strength, ultimate tensile strength decreases when temperature increased. The effect on fatigue failure of the parameters such as plastic strain amplitude and plastic strain energy density was also investigated. With the experimental results, a structural analysis of turbine blades of 316 stainless steel were carried out.

Directed energy deposition (DED) is an additive manufacturing technology involving a focused high-power laser or electron beam propagating over the substrate, resulting in melt pool formation while simultaneously supplying metal powder to the melt pool area to deposit the material. DED is performed to repair and strengthen parts in various applications, as it can be easily integrate local area cladding and cross-material deposition. In this study, we characterize stainless steel 316 L parts fabricated via DED based on various deposition conditions and geometries to widen the application of DED. The deposition characteristics are investigated by varying the laser power and powder feed rate. Multilayer deposition with a laser power of 362 W and a powder feed rate of 6.61 g/min indicate a height closest to the design value while affording high surface quality. The microhardness of the specimen increases from the top to the bottom of the deposited area. Tensile tests of specimens with two different deposition directions indicate that horizontally long specimens with respect to a substrate demonstrate a higher ultimate tensile strength and yield strength than vertically long specimens with lower elongation.
The aim of this study was to propose a multiple linear regression (MLR) equation to predict ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 316L stainless steel with unspecified pit corrosion. Tensile specimens with pit corrosion were prepared using a potentiostatic acceleration test method. Pit corrosion was characterized by measuring ten factors using a confocal laser microscope. Data were collected from 22 tensile tests. At 85% confidence level, total pit volume, maximum pit depth, mean ratio of surface area, and mean area were significant factors showing linear relationships with UTS. The MLR equation using these three significant factors at a 85% confidence level showed considerable prediction performance for UTS. Determination coefficient (R2) was 0.903 with training and test data sets. The yield strength ratio of 316L stainless steel was found to be around 0.85. All specimens with a pit corrosion presented a yield ratio of approximately 0.85 with R2 of 0.998. Therefore, pit corrosion did not affect the yield ratio.
In this study, we investigated the effects of extrusion ratio and extrusion temperature on the microstructure and tensile properties of extruded Mg-6Al-0.3Mn-0.3Ca-0.2Y (SEN6) alloy. As the extrusion ratio and temperature increase, dynamic recrystallization during extrusion is promoted, leading to the formation of a fully recrystallized microstructure with increased grain size. Additionally, the increases in extrusion ratio and temperature lead to texture strengthening, exhibiting a higher maximum texture intensity. The extruded materials contain three types of secondary phases, i.e., Al8Mn4Y, Al2Y, and Al2Ca, with irregular or polygonal shapes. The quantity, size, distribution, and area fraction of the second-phase particles are nearly identical between the two materials. Despite its larger grain size, the tensile yield strength of the material extruded at 450 ℃ and an extrusion ratio of 25 (450-25) is higher than that of the material extruded at 325 ℃ and an extrusion ratio of 10 (325-10), which is mainly attributed to the stronger texture hardening effect of the former. The ultimate tensile strength is similar in the two materials, owing to the higher work hardening rate in the 325-10 extrudate. Despite differences in grain size and recrystallization fraction, numerous twins are formed throughout the specimen during tensile deformation in both materials; consequently, the two materials exhibit nearly the same tensile elongation.

This study reports a series of drop impact tests performed to generate denting damages on stiffened plates and their residual ultimate strength tests under axial compression. The models were fabricated of general structural steel, and each model has six longitudinal stiffeners and two transverse frames. Among six fabricated models, four were damaged, and two were left intact for reference. To investigate the effects of collision velocity and impact location on the extent of damage, the drop height and the impact location were changed in each impact test. After performing the collision tests, the ultimate axial compression tests were conducted to investigate the residual strengths of the damaged stiffened plates. Finite element analyses were also carried out using a commercial package Abaqus/Explicit. The material properties obtained from a quasi-static tensile tests were used, and the strain-rate sensitivity was considered. After importing the collision simulation results, the ultimate strength calculations were carried out and their results were compared with the test data for the validation of the finite element analysis method.
