The longitudinal reinforcement ratio for the performance-based design of columns was studied. Unlike the existing design codes using uniform minimum reinforcement ratio and effective stiffness for all columns, the longitudinal reinforcement ratio of columns was defined as the function of various design parameters. To evaluate the minimum reinforcement ratio, two conditions were considered: 1) prevention of passive yielding of compression re-bars due to the creep and shrinkage of concrete under sustained service loads; and 2) ultimate flexural strength greater than the cracking moment capacity to maintain the ductility of columns for earthquake design. In addition, the effective flexural stiffness of columns for structural analysis was determined according to the longitudinal reinforcement ratio. The design method addressing the three criteria was proposed. The proposed method was applied to a design example.
Experimental and analytical studies were conducted to clarify the influencing mechanisms of the longitudinal reinforcement on performance of axially loaded Reinforced Concrete-Filled Steel Tube (R-CFST) short columns. The longitudinal reinforcement ratio was set as parameter, and 10 R-CFST specimens with five different ratios and three Concrete-Filled Steel Tube (CFST) specimens for comparison were prepared and tested. Based on the test results, the failure modes, load transfer responses, peak load, stiffness, yield to strength ratio, ductility, fracture toughness, composite efficiency and stress state of steel tube were theoretically analyzed. To further examine, analytical investigations were then performed, material model for concrete core was proposed and verified against the test, and thereafter 36 model specimens with four different wall-thickness of steel tube, coupling with nine reinforcement ratios, were simulated. Finally, considering the experimental and analytical results, the prediction equations for ultimate load bearing capacity of R-CFSTs were modified from the equations of CFSTs given in codes, and a new equation which embeds the effect of reinforcement was proposed, and equations were validated against experimental data. The results indicate that longitudinal reinforcement significantly impacts the behavior of R-CFST as steel tube does; the proposed analytical model is effective and reasonable; proper ratios of longitudinal reinforcement enable the R-CFSTs obtain better balance between the performance and the construction cost, and the range for the proper ratios is recommended between 1.0% and 3.0%, regardless of wall-thickness of steel tube; the proposed equation is recommended for more accurate and stable prediction of the strength of R-CFSTs.

The longitudinal stiffener performs its role to increase the local buckling strength by making simple support upon compression flange. In the recent researches, it is investigated that compression flange with point supports on certain arrangement reveals the same strength with longitudinal stiffeners. From this results, it is predictable that shear stud could perform the role of longitudinal stiffener if shear stud embedded in concrete satisfies the requirement to point-support under yield stress of the compression flange. In this study, the researches were performed to investigate the optimally required arrangement space of longitudinal point-support for which the shear stud replacing the longitudinal stiffeners and simultaneously determine the required numbers and space of shear stud for completely composite behavior between compression bottom flange and bottom concrete on the double composite girder system.

In general, flexural strength and ductility of reinforced concrete beam with stirrup depend on the compressive strength of concrete and longitudinal steel ratio. In this study, nine reinforced high strength lightweight concrete beams and three reinforced normalweight concrete beams with stirrup were tested to investigate their behavior and to determine their ultimate moment capacity. The variable were strength of concrete (400, 500kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$) and the ratio of tensile steel content to the ratio of the balanced steel content(0.22<$\rho$/$$\rho$_b$<0.56). Test results are presented in terms of load-deflection behavior, ductility index, and cracking patterns.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the shear behavior of reinforced concrete beams according to small shear span-depth ratio between a/d=1.5, 2.8, 3.6. In general, shear strength of reinforced concrete beams is dependent on the compressive strength of concrete the longitudinal steel ratio, the shear span-depth ratio and shear reinforcement. The static test was carried out to measure the ultimate load, the initial load of flexural and diagonal cracking, crack patterns, fracture modes. The load versus strain and load versus deflection relations were obtained from the static test. The test results on shear strength were compared with results obtained by the formulas of ACI code 318-95. The shear strength of reinforced concrete beams exceeded those predicted following present ACI code 318-95(11-6).

To analysis of the embanked slope stability using a jointed reinforcement, the internal stability and the external stability have to be satisfied, respectively. But, because the lengths of ready-made steel-grid were limited, the reinforcements must be connecting themselves to the reinforcing. In this study, the mechanical test was carried out to investigate the tensile failure and the pullout failure at the joint parts of them, which was based on the analysis of reinforced slope in field. Through the tensile tests in mid-air for the jointed steel-grid, the deformation behavior was seriously observed as follows : deformation of longitudinal member, plastic deformation of longitudinal member and of crank part. Those effects were due to the confining pressure and overburden pressure of the surrounding ground. The bearing resistance at jointed part of jointed steel-grid was due to the latter only. The maximum tensile forces were higher about 20kN~27kN than ultimate pullout resistance, but, the results of those was almost the same in mid-soil. The failures of steel-grid occurred at welded point both of longitudinal members and transverse members and of jointed parts. The strength of jointed parts itself got pullout force about 20kN, which was about 65% for ultimate pullout force of the longitudinal members N=2. To the stability analysis of reinforced structure including the reinforced slope, the studying of connection effects at jointed part of reinforcement members must be considered. Through the results of them, the stability of reinforced structures should be satisfied.

This study reports a series of drop impact tests performed to generate denting damages on stiffened plates and their residual ultimate strength tests under axial compression. The models were fabricated of general structural steel, and each model has six longitudinal stiffeners and two transverse frames. Among six fabricated models, four were damaged, and two were left intact for reference. To investigate the effects of collision velocity and impact location on the extent of damage, the drop height and the impact location were changed in each impact test. After performing the collision tests, the ultimate axial compression tests were conducted to investigate the residual strengths of the damaged stiffened plates. Finite element analyses were also carried out using a commercial package Abaqus/Explicit. The material properties obtained from a quasi-static tensile tests were used, and the strain-rate sensitivity was considered. After importing the collision simulation results, the ultimate strength calculations were carried out and their results were compared with the test data for the validation of the finite element analysis method.
This paper focuses on a development of strut-and-tie model (STM) to predict the capacity of an improved longitudinal joint for decked bulb-tee bridge systems. Nine reinforced concrete beam/slab specimens anchored by spliced headed bars with different details were tested. Test results were evaluated and compared with an anticipation of the validated STM. The proposed STM provides a lower bound of the ultimate capacity of the joint zone. It shows that the lap length of headed bars has a significant effect on structural behaviors of the improved joint. To develop a full strength joint, the range of the lap length can be determined by the strength and compatibility requirement. Design recommendations to spliced headed bars, concrete strength, as well as lacer bars in the joint zone are proposed for developing a full strength joint.

The effects of heat treatment and fiber orientation on tensile strength and fatigue behavior were studied in a continuously reinforced. magnesium-based composite Following an earlier TEM investigation, specimens were thermally aged to modified the interfacial zone between the alumina fibers and the magnesium alloy matrix. From the tensile experimental results, the ultimate tensile strength of the aged specimens were lower than that of the as-fabricated due to weak fiber-matrix interfacial strength with chemical reaction during the thermal processing. The fatigue crack growth experiments were conducted with specimens having the fiber orientation normal to the crack growth direction (longitudinal) and also specimens with the fibers oriented parallel to the crack growth direction(transverse). A comparison of the fatigue crack growth behavior indicates that aged longitudinal specimens are more resistant to fatigue crack growth the as-fabricated longitudinal specimens. Conversely, as-fabricated transverse specimens are more resistant to fatigue crack growth than aged transverse specimens.

The purposes of this study are to verify a reasonable model of material characteristic and to propose a rational model of reinforcement characteristic considering monotonic and cyclic loading about manufactured reinforcing steel in Korea. Longitudinal reinforcements of the plastic hinge region were behaved tensile deformation and compressional deformation by direction of lateral loading. However Confinement steels were behaved only tensile deformation by lateral loading. Transverse steels were laid the state of tension in the lateral loading of time, and they were laid state that stress is zero when it was removed lateral load. The tests for cyclic tension loading were performed for test variable as yield strength and reinforcement bar sizes. It was estimated that the total strain energy per unit volume was 74 $MJ/m^3$. The modified ultimate concrete compression strain model was proposed based on experimental study of cyclic tension test for manufactured reinforcing steel in Korea.
