  • The purpose of this study is to help create environments for early childhood education according to the principles of Constructivism. Generally, preschools in Ulsan Metropolitan City were used as samples for this study More particularly, 116 kindergartens were surveyed by telephone to evaluate their education programs. Four kindergartens that completely or partially used Constructivism in their programs were chosen as primary subjects for this study The results of this study were as follows: First, it was discovered that preschool education in Ulsan uses an integrated education model based on activities and Montessorie. Constructivist programs were also present using Project Approach, Reggio Emilia and Piaget. Second, the number of infants per class averaged 29.3. The average infants per playroom was 2.38$m^2$. It seems, therefore, that there is a lack of sufficient space for activities. Playroom furniture is primarily used for storage and it lacks variety and flexibility of use. The interior of preschools in related to materials, color and images also showed little difference among schools. Third, it was found that virtually every play space did not have adequate water playing and sand playing sections. Instead, the space for the large-muscle activities of big groups was used for this purpose. Fourth, kindergartens that use the principles of Constructivism plan to specialize their activities. Those only partially using Constructivism showed conventional tendencies and small play spaces that would be defined as inadequate according to Constructivism. This study, therefore, demonstrates that preschool education based on Constructivism are not being well-implemented in concert with other programs.

  • The aim of this study was to compare the regional difference of death from intentional self-harm. The analysis was based on data of intentional self-harm deaths (31,450) from the 2010-2011 vital statistics of Korea. The suicide rate (per 100,000 population) was 46.2 in male and 22.3 in female. Gender ratio (male / female) of suicide rate was 2.07, and Jeju province had the lowest gender ratio (1.82), and Chungbuk province had the highest gender ratio (2.42). In the age-gender standardized death rate (per 100,000) of self-harm by region, the highest suicide rate was observed in Gangwon province (44.8) and Chungnam province (44.3), and the lowest in Seoul metropolitan city (28.9) and Ulsan metropolitan city (29.2). There was a significant increase in the rate of suicide in city areas (odds ratio: 1.11, 95% CI: 1.08-1.13), county areas (1.62, 1.56-1.67) as compared with the rate of suicide in metropolitan areas. The commonest methods of suicide were hanging (53.7 percent), self-poisoning by pesticides (16.8 percent) and jumping from a height (14.3 percent). The methods used for suicide differed between rural (county) and urban areas (metropolitan city and city). In county areas, 43 percent of suicides used pesticides as compared to only 7-18 percent of those in urban areas. In urban areas, jumping was more common (13-17 percent vs. 6 percent). There were no difference in hanging between urban and rural areas. The odds ratio of death by pesticides was 9.86 in rural areas compared with death rate of metropolitan areas. The odds ratio of death by jumping was 0.59 in rural compared with death rate of metropolitan areas.

  • Various studies have analyzed urban decline at a universal level using the general characteristics of declining cities. However, urban decline at the city level should be considered because this decay occurs based on the unique attributes of a particular city. In addition, since this phenomenon occurs and spreads in microspaces, studies should consider smaller spatial units continuously. This study aims to develop an urban decline measurement model that considers regional characteristics to analyze the urban decline of Ulsan Metropolitan City over time and space. The index value of Ulsan, compared to the national average, is calculated and reflected in the weight to reflect regional characteristics in the model. In addition, after analyzing urban decline by administrative dong units, we also performed analysis by counting district units using spatial hierarchical structure to demonstrate evaluation on smaller unit spaces. As a result of analyzing urban decline patterns by associating the index calculated using the model with the social phenomenon of Ulsan Metropolitan City, urban decline formed clusters and spread to adjacent regions over time. In addition, results confirmed that external factors such as new towns and urban regeneration projects affect urban decline. By illustrating the degree of urban decline proposed measurement model used in this study, it is possible to present the priority of areas required for urban regeneration projects. Results are also helpful to test the effectiveness of completed or presently-implemented urban regeneration projects.

  • This study collected and analyzed transportation card data in order to better understand the operation and usage of city buses in Ulsan Metropolitan City in Korea. The analysis used quantitative and qualitative indicators according to the characteristics of the data, and also the categories were classified as general status, operational status, and satisfaction. The existing city bus survey method has limitations in terms of survey scale and in the survey process itself, which incurs various types of errors as well as requiring a lot of time and money to conduct. In particular, the bus means indicators calculated using transportation card data were analyzed to compensate for the shortcomings of the existing operational status survey methods that rely entirely on site surveys. The city bus index calculated by using the transportation card data involves quantitative operation status data related to the user, and this results in the advantage of being able to conduct a complete survey without any data loss in the data collection process. We took the transportation card data from the entire city bus network of Ulsan Metropolitan City on Wednesday April 3, 2019. The data included information about passenger numbers/types, bus types, bus stops, branches, bus operators, transfer information, and so on. From the data analysis, it was found that a total of 234,477 people used the city bus on the one day, of whom 88.6% were adults and 11.4% were students. In addition, the stop with the most passengers boarding and alighting was Industrial Tower (10,861 people), A total of 20,909 passengers got on and off during the peak evening period of 5 PM to 7 PM, and 13,903 passengers got on and off the No. 401 bus route. In addition, the top 26 routes in terms of the highest number of passengers occupied 50% of the total passengers, and the top five bus companies carried more than 70% of passengers, while 62.46% of the total routes carried less than 500 passengers per day. Overall, it can be said that this study has great significance in that it confirmed the possibility of replacing the existing survey method by analyzing city bus use by using transportation card data for Ulsan Metropolitan City. However, due to limitations in the collection of available data, analysis was performed only on one matched data, attempts to analyze time series data were not made, and the scope of analysis was limited because of not considering a methodology for efficiently analyzing large amounts of real-time data.

  • Liquefaction hazard caused by earthquake is the damage in a wide range. Until now, liquefaction hazard potential at a small area or most structure in Korea was assessed by modified Seed & Idriss method. However, it has been known that this method is not proper for metropolitan area due to a lot of time and data to perform the related ground response analyses such as Shake program. For these reasons, the current method has been used facilities or structures, not metropolitan area. In this study, several contents in seismic design of Eurocode and Korean seismic design standard for Port and Harbor were introduced and applied for assessing the liquefaction potential and mapping the liquefaction hazard by LPI(Liquefaction Potential Index). Finally, Ulsan metropolitan city was practically drawn in two dimensional space.

  • Rapid urbanization occurred a variety of transportation problems. Parking problem is one of the most problems of transportation problem then transportation engineers would get involved in trying to solve parking problem. A way to overcome a variety of parking problems needs preliminary data for conditions of parking but it lacks the preliminary data to do so. Thus this study analyzed a characteristic of a parking through a field survey for parking in Daegu Metropolitan City and Ulsan Metropolitan City. This study analyzed parking turnover, parking use ratio and parking basic unit for characteristic of a parking of each use districts and each cities. This study result reveals difference between the use districts' parking characteristic and cities' parking characteristic. Thus a close examination for use districts' parking characteristic and cities' parking characteristic is a prerequisite for a rational parking policy.

  • Torrential rain and drought are repeated due to the increase in the unpredictable fluctuating of rainfall patterns. It is time for stabilize water resource management in terms of disaster prevention. Distributed control from sources is needed to minimize damages caused by torrential rains and droughts. Rain barrel can be used to reduce the runoff as they collect and store rainwater. In response to this situation, Seoul Metropolitan Government and other local governments implemented a project to support the installation of rain barrel and provided 90% of the cost of installing it in private areas. However, with limited budget, it is difficult to distribute rainwater to the city which is mostly covered by private areas. In this study, Samho-dong, Ulsan, where pilot projects of water cycle leading city are underway, analyzed the effects of reducing the runoff with respect to the amount of rainwater that can be used, and analyzed the economics of recoverable investment cost when installed. From the analysis, it was established that it is possible to show sufficient efficiency with a small capacity without the need to install large rain barrel effectively in the private sector, and to support the installation cost of less than 70 percent of the rainwater can be recovered.
