Researches on services of vehicles have been mainly focused on how to provide useful information and entertainment for an in-vehicle driver. However, the needs are appreciably increased for more advanced services that help drivers to check and manage their vehicles conveniently, without requiring drivers to attach to their vehicles. It is a sort of ubiquitous computing, providing an intelligent interactive services for human at any time and any where. In this paper, we present an intelligent vehicle information system to enable a driver to remotely diagnose and control a vehicle via CDMA communication network connected to the Internet. The system improves mobility for diagnosis and control of vehicle by implementing a cut and call back mechanism, which allows the vehicle terminal to have access to the information server on the Internet via CDMA call. No matter where the driver is, he can obtain the remote diagnosis and control services on the web browser without any additional application installation. Design methodology is introduced and evaluation results are analyzed for the CDMA-based intelligent vehicle information system. The experimental results show that the response time of the vehicle terminal to a web client request is 10.302 seconds at the beginning and 646.44ms thereafter. The average response time of CAN sensor node to a vehicle terminal request is 6.669ms.

In this paper, we have developed communication modules for ubiquitous transportation sensor network (u-TSN). The developed module can be used for intelligent transportation services. The developed systems are based on IEEE 802.11a and IEEE 802.11g technologies for vehicle and infrastructure systems, respectively. We have found that the throughput for the developed systems is at maximum around 15 Mbps. It is reduced to 10 Mbps at a long distance and high speed condition. The performance is enough to support traffic control services in dense traffic condition.
There are various polluting emissions related to the air quality such as $NO_x$, $CO_2$, CO, VOCs, $O_3$, $SO_2$, $CH_4$, $H_2S$, $NH_3$, etc. We need the system that reduces emission of these environment gases and detects risk factors in modern society. Therefore, if we use the USN(Ubiquitous Sensor Network) technology and a MAV(Micro Air Vehicle) Quad Rotor which can be hovering and moving free for setting up the environment gas sensing system, the realtime measurement on environment gases is facilitated and by extension, in application of traffic watchdog, forest fire surveillance and counter-terrorism efforts, we anticipate making better use of a Quad Rotor.

For the mobile meteorological services, sensed data should be gathered at a server from various clients like as Ubiquitous Sensor Network, mobile phone or public traffic vehicle by wireless network. The gathered data at server have huge volume and increase continuously. Therefore, a special query method and data structure should be considered. This paper studies on all possible query type on the data and processing steps for the mobile meteorological services. Some query spaces will be discussed. After that, this paper proposes effective data structure for the sensed data to support the query types.

The cargo of ships and offshore structures is the number of oil of combustibility and volatile, oil processing cargo. Furthermore heavy cargo of the vehicle or container box or bulk cargo are occupied the remainder of cargo. In addition, there is a possibility to move the location of the cargo and the vessel because it is received periodic / non-periodic a load of wave and ocean current. Therefore a shipboard hazard is much greater than onshore industry hazard. Monitoring and preparation for safety are necessary things because there is always risk of accidents arise from the impact of the freight and cargo of ships and offshore structures. In this study, we conducted a study with respect to the introduction of the wireless sensor network monitoring system to ensure the safety of the crew and workers on shipboard.

Recently, various new services based on ubiquitous computing and networking have been developed. In this paper, we contrive Adaptive PIR(Pyroelectric Infrared Radiation) Detection Algorithm (APIDA), a PIR-sensor based digital signal processing algorithm, that detects the movement of an invading object by the recognition of heat change in the detection area, since the object like person or car emits heat(i.e., infrared radition), We devised APIDA as a highly reliable signal processing algorithm that increases the successful detection rate and decreases the false alarm rate in the intruding object detection. According to performance evaluation experiment, APIDA shows the successful detection rate of 90% and low false alarm in the plain area.

This study presented an algorithm to detect zigzag driving maneuver that is highly associated with vehicle crash occurrence. In general, the zigzag driving results from the driver's inattention including drowsy driving and driving while intoxicated. Therefore, the technology to detect such unsafe driving maneuver will provide us with a valuable opportunity to prevent crash in the road. The proposed detection algorithm used angular velocity data obtained from a gyro sensor. Performance evaluations of the algorithm presented promising results for the actual implementation in practice. The outcome of this study can be used as novel information contents under the ubiquitous transportation systems environment.

Collection of invaluable real-time traffic data becomes available under ubiquitous transportation sensor networks (UTSN). Various research efforts have been made to utilize such useful data for deriving more accurate and reliable traffic information. This study presented a novel concept of decentralized traffic information and method to process traffic data which are obtained from inter-vehicle communications under the UTSN. In addition, an experimental evaluation to investigate the feasibility of the proposed method using probe vehicle data. Predictive travel times were estimated and evaluated for the feasibility investigation. Technical issues were derived and discussed to fully implement the proposed system. The outcomes of this study would be used as a guideline in designing better next-generation traffic information systems.

Harbor facilities require long-term durability and safety, and also maintain the performance requirement until the durability life. However, existing harbor facilities are becoming superannuated with durable years and durability is declined by erosion of the sea and damage from sea. In addition, harbor facilities will be in demand for the expansion of harbor and offshore structures with rising economic power by enhancement of domestic industry and increase of import and export. Therefore, in this study, two kinds of nondestructive test (NDT) techniques (schmidt rebound hammer and ultrasonic sensor) are verified for the effective maintenance of underwater concrete structures including harbor facilities. Sea field applicability of Schmidt hammer and ultrasonic sensor was verified by comparing field test result with sea field test result and also deduced the compressive strength estimation equation by depth of the water. On the basis of the sea field test result, compressive strength estimation equation which was deduced by multiple regression analysis indicated highest accuracy compared to other equations, especially it will be more likely to be used in underwater because of the depth of water correction. In the future, if schmidt hammer and ultrasonic sensor which were invented as waterproofing are used with ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle), it will be possible to make a diagnosis of high reliability for underwater concrete structures and set up a ubiquitous concept of NDT system.

Transportation has been playing important role in our society by providing for people, freight, and information. However, it cuts its own throat by causing car accidents, traffic congestion, and air pollution. The main cause of these problems is a noticeable growth in the number of vehicles. The easiest way to mitigate these problems is to build new road infrastructures unless resources such as time, money, and space are limited. Therefore, there is a need to manage the existing road infrastructures effectively and safely. In this paper, we propose a road reservation scheme that provides fast and safe response for emergency vehicles using ubiquitous sensor network. Our idea is to allow emergency vehicle to reserve a road on a freeway for arriving to the scene of the accident quickly and safely. We evaluate the performance by three reservation method (No, Hop, and Full) to show that emergency vehicles such as ambulances, fire trucks, or police cars can rapidly and safely reach their destination. Simulation results show that the average speed of road reservation is about 1.09 ~ 1.20 times faster than that of non-reservation at various flow rates. However, road reservation should consider the speed of the emergency vehicle and the road density of the emergency vehicle processing direction, as a result of Hop Reservation and Full Reservation performance comparison analysis. We confirm that road reservation can guarantee safe driving of emergency vehicles without reducing their speed and help to mitigate traffic congestion.
