The quantitative analytical method for major antioxidants, ellagic acid and punicalagin, in pomegranate husk (Granati pericarpium) were established by HPLC. The optimal HPLC conditions were as follows: Column; Agilent Zorbax Eclipse XDB-C18 ($4.6{\times}150mm,\;5{\mu}m$), mobile phase; 1% formic acid in water (A) and 1% formic acid in MeCN (B) (gradient elution of 5% to 100% B for 50 min), flow rate; 0.8 ml/min., detection; UV 254 nm. The optimal pre-treatment conditions for HPLC analysis were as follows: 5 g of pomegranate husk in 100 ml of 95% EtOH, refluxed for 3 h. Under these analytical conditions, punicalagin and ellagic acid contents in Korean pomegranates husks which were cultivated in five different sites were determined. As results, the ellagic acid and punicalagin (as a mixture of ${\alpha-\;and\;{\beta}-anomer$) contents were the highest in Haepyung pomegranate husk $(15.27{\mu}g/mg)$ and Jangsung pomegranate husk $(16.21{\mu}g/mg)$, respectively.

In this research, we synthesized potassium ferrate(VI) acting as an oxidant, disinfectant, and coagulant, and used it to treat natural organic matter(NOM, HA and FA) in river water. The removal efficiencies obtained by $UV_{254}$ ranged from 20.7 to 73.6% for 10 mg/L HA and from 52.6 to 77.5% for 10 mg/L FA in Nakdong river sample as the ferrate dose varied from 2 to 46 mg/L(as Fe). However, the removal efficiencies by TOC analysis ranged from 0 to 20.3% for HA and from 0 to 26.6% for FA at the same ferrate doses. The removal efficiencies of NOM increased either with decreasing pH or with increasing temperature. The removal efficiency of HA by ferrate was comparable to those by traditional coagulants such as $Al_2(SO_4)_3{\cdot}18H_2O$, $FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$, and FeO(OH). The reaction between ferrate and HA reached a steady state within 60 seconds, showing first-order with respect to the reaction time. The removal efficiencies of HA by traditional coagulants were improved by pretreatment of HA using a small amount of ferrate.
In this study, we used multi-channels ceramic membrane having larger permeate volume per unit time rather than tubular membrane. The hybrid process for advanced drinking water treatment was composed of granular activated carbons (GAC) packing between module inside and outside of multi-channels microfiltration membrane. Instead of natural organic matters (NOM) and fine inorganic particles in natural water source, modified solution was prepared with humic acid and kaolin. Kaolin concentration was fixed at 30mg/L and humic acid was changed as $2{\sim}10\;mg/L$ to inspect effect of organic matters. As a result, both resistance of membrane fouling ($R_f$) and permeate flux (J) were highly influenced by concentration of humic acid. Also, in result of water-back-flushing period (FT) effect, the shorter FT was the more effective to reduce membrane fouling and to enhance permeate flux because of frequent water-back-flushing. However, the optimal FT condition was 8 min when operating costs were considered. Then, the hybrid process using multi-channels ceramic membrane and GAC was applied to lake water treatment. As a result, average treatment efficiencies in our experiment using the hybrid process were 98.02% for turbidity, 75.64% for $UV_{254}$ absorbance, 7.18% for TDS and 84.73% for $COD_{Mn}$.
NOM and fine particles are the main target materials in water treatment using membranes. Particularly, humic substances extracted from soils are frequently used in many fundamental studies representing natural organic matter in raw water for drinking water treatment. In this study, ultrafiltration (UF) of artificial humic water and natural river water was conducted and the characteristics of removal efficiency and permeability were compared. In the UF of river water, the transmembrane pressure increased in the same pattern with that of 5 mg/L humic water. For the removal of organic matter and fine particles, however, two types of feed water had shown different trends. Kaolin particles and humic acids added to artificial water were better removed, while colloids and organics in natural water were relatively poorly removed. From the $UV_{254}$ and GPC analyses, it seemed that the hydrophobicity and size of humic substances contributed to the greater removal of organic matter. The UF membrane applied for humic water also showed a higher flux recovery by caustic chemical cleaning than that for river water.

Effects of powdered activated carbon impregnated by iron oxide nano particle (Impregnated PAC) on the microfiltration (MF) membrane system performance in NOM removal from water were investigated in this study. A fluidized bed column was employed as a pretreatment of MF membrane process. The Impregnated PAC bed was stably maintained at an upflow rate of 63 m/d without leakage of the Impregnated PAC particles, which provided a contact time of 29 minutes. A magnetic ring at the upper part of the column could effectively hold the overflowing discrete particles. The Impregnated PAC column demonstrated a significant enhancement in the MF membrane performance in terms of fouling prevention and natural organic matter (NOM) removal. Trans-membrane pressure of the MF membrane increased to 41 kPa in 98 hours of operation, while it could be maintained at 12 kPa with the Impregnated PAC pretreatment. Removal of NOM determined by dissolved organic carbon and UV254 was also enhanced from 46% and 51% to 75% and 84%, respectively, by the pretreatment. It was found that the Impregnated PAC effectively removed a wide range of different molecular-sized organic compounds from size exclusion analysis.

This study was to evaluate the optimum conditions for chemical coagulation to remove color from the effluent of a piggery wastewater treatment process. The DOC concentration in the effluent was about 227.3 mg/L, color was 2,430 CU, turbidity was 22.1 NTU, and UV$_{254}$-absorbance was 3.7 cm$^{-1}$. The fractions of hydrophobic, transphilic, and hydrophilic substance of the effluent was about 55.3%, 17.4%, 27.3% respectively. Also, molecular weight cut-off(MWCO) of below 0.5 K, 0.5 K to 1 K, 1 K to 10 K, 10 K to 30 K, and over 30 K were 74.2%, 7.3%, 5.5%, 7.1%, and 5.9% respectively. SCD(streaming current Detector) was used to find out the optimum pH values and coagulant dosages. The optimum dosages and pH of Al$^{3+}$ were 5.84 mM and 5.3, while those of Fe$^{3+}$ were 9.25 mM and 5.0, respectively. At optimum conditions of coagulation, color removal efficiencies for aluminium sulfate and ferric chloride were as high as 91.9 and 98.7%, respectively. Chemical coagulation showed good performance to remove color from on biologically treated piggery wastewater.
This study was carried out to evaluate the pollutant removal efficiencies of the advanced drinking water treatment using activated carbon process. for raw water, Nakdong river was used. from the activated carbon adsorption experiment the fellowing results were obtained The efficiency of water treatment enhanced with increase in empty bed contact time. Variation of pH was not detected to the bed depth, but DO content gradually decreased with the bed depth. Removal efficiency of $KMnO_4$ consumption, UV254 absorption, DOC and THMFP also were increased by increasing in the bed depth. Transition of adsorption zone from upper parts of the bed to the lower parts were detected as treatment periods increased. Large portion of DOCs were degraded and removed by the microbes growing on the surface of activated carbons. Cell numbers of microbes were estimated over $1.1\times10^7\;cell/cm^3$ at the depth of 20 cm from the surface 126 days after starting operation. The results shown that the activated carbon Inter was successfully acted as a biofilm filter.
In this study, we used hybrid module that was composed of packing granular activated carbon (GAC) between module inside and outside of ceramic microfiltration membrane for advanced drinking water treatment. Instead of natural organic matters (NOM) and fine inorganic particles in natural water source, synthetic water was prepared with humic acid and kaolin. Packing fraction of GAC was changed from 0 to 24.05% to see effect of packing fraction. As a result, changing curves of resistance of membrane fouling ($R_f$) and permeate flux (J) during 3 h operation were almost overlapped independent of packing fraction of GAC. Treatment efficiencies of turbidity were very high above 99.46% at all packing fractions of GAC. And treatment efficiency of NOM, which was measured by $UV_{254}$ absorbance, was the highest value of 99.43% at packing fraction of 24.05%. Then, we operated the hybrid process during 13 h at packing fraction of 24.05%. As a result, J was rapidly dropped according to increase of membrane fouling within initial 1 h of operation, and almost constant after 3 h. And treatment efficiencies of turbidity and NOM were stable and high values of 99.52% and 96.63%, respectively.
The metabolites of 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene (TMB) were synthesized and determined by capillary electrophoresis (CE). The optimum conditions of CE for the separation and determination of 3,4-, 2,4-, 2,5-dimethylbenzoic acid and 3,4-, 2,4-, 2,5-dimethylhippuric acid from the rat urine were as following: the fused silica capillary($75{\mu}m$ i.d. ${\times}$ 36 cm length, 29 cm to detector) was used and kept at $15^{\circ}C$. The applied voltage was 10㎸ and compounds were detected at UV 210 mnm and 254 nm. The running electrolyte was 0.1 M phosphate buffer (pH 7) containing 15 mM of ${\beta}-CD$ and 3% of 2-propanol. The relative amount of the metabolite of 1,2,4-TMB in the rat urine was 56.7% of 3,4-isomer, 30.5% of 2,4-isomer and 12.8% of 2,5-isomer. This method can be applied to the analysis of TMB-metabolites in human urine.

This paper deals with a rapid method for determination of ATP and its related compounds in fish and shellfish products using high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC). The HPLC used is a HPLC/ALC-224 equiped with UV-spectrophotometer (254 nm) as detector and integrator (Yanagimoto system-1000). The column used is a stainless steel tubing ($30.0\;cm{\times}3.9\;mm\;i.d.$) packed with ${\mu}-Bon-dapak\;C_{18}$. A mixture of $1\%$ triethylamine-phosphoric acid(pH6.5) was used as an eluent and the flow rate of the eluent was controlled at 2 ml/min. For the separation of ATP and its related compounds, a standard mixture of ATP, ADP, AMP, IMP, inosine and hypoxanthine was subjected to HPLC under the above mentioned conditions. Six peaks were obtained with retention times within 20 min, and elution order were hypoxanthine, IMP, inosine, AMP, ADP and ATP. But 5'-IMP and 5'-GMP fractions were not separated by this method. In generally, IMP content in boiled-dried fish and shellfish products purchased from the market was comparatively higher than that of other nucleotides. Especially, boiled-dried big eye herring marked higher value in IMP content than other boiled-dried ones. Hypoxanthine and inosine were major components of ATP-related compounds in dried products and seasoned-dried ones. And IMP content in seasoned-dried products was higher than that of dried ones. This fact is suggested that a part of IMP in seasoned-dried ones was derived from flavoring matter (MSG, 5'-IMP and 5'-GMP) which is added during the seasoning treatment.
