  • The intrinsic flame retardant and heat resistant polymers such as PQXS [poly( quinoxaline )sulfide], PIQS [poly(isoquinoline)sulfide] and PQS [poly(quinoline)sulfide] were synthesized from 2, 3-dichloroquinoxaline, 1, 3-dichloroisoquinoline and 4, 7-dichloroquinoline. They were characterized by FT-IR, UV/Vis spectroscopy, DTA and elemental analysis. The melting point above $350^{\circ}C$ of the polymers show higher than that of the heat resistant PPS polymer(mp. $295^{\circ}C$), In the LOI test, the polymers exhibit an intrinsically high flame retardant property having the LOI values in the range of 41~42. The vertical burning test for the polymers also show an UL 94 V-0 performance.

  • Deinococcus radiophilus, an UV resistant bacterium seemed to contain three issoenzymes of catalase. Among them, the samllest and most abundant species in cell-free extract, catalase-3 which also exhibited peroxidase activity was purified to electrophoretic homogeneity (145-fold purification) by chromatographic procedures. Its molecular weight was 155 kDa composed of four 38 kDa subunits. The $K_{m}$ value of catalase-3 for H$\_$2/O$\_$2/ was approximately 0.5 mM. This enzyme showed a typical ferric heme spectrum with maximum absorption at 405 nm. Upon binding to cyanide, the 405 nm peak shifted to 420 nm. Catalase-3 was very sensitive to inhibitors of heme proteins, such as cyanide, azide and hydroxylamine. A ratio of A$\_$405/A$\_$28O/ was 0.5 Catalase-3 was active over a wide range of pH, between pH 7 and 10. The enzyme was rather heat-labile and partially sensitive to edthanol-chloroform treatment, but resistant to 3-amino-1, 2, 4-triazole. Catalase-3 of D. radiophilus, which is a bifunction catalatic peroxidatic enzyme seemed to share certain molecular properties with the typical catalase and the catalase-[roxidase along with its own unique features.

  • The pollution of antibiotics is a major cause of spreading antibiotics resistant bacteria in the environment. Applications of ozonation, UV, and ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiations have been introduced to remove antibiotics in the effluents from wastewater treatment system. In this study, we compared the chemical (HPLC) and biological (antimicrobial susceptibility test, AMS) assays in measuring of the concentrations of residual antibiotics after ${\gamma}-ray$ and UV irradiation. Most samples were degraded by ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiation (1~2 kGy). However, lincomycin and tetracycline were not degraded by UV irradiation. The concentration of residual antibiotics, that was treated with ${\gamma}-ray$ and UV irradiation, measuring by bioassay was similar to HPLC. The concentrations of ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiated cephradine measured by AMS test were 2 times higher than that of HPLC assay, indicating AMS test is more sensitive than HPLC assay. These results indicate that ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiation technique is more useful than UV irradiation, and biological assay is more useful to detect the antibiotics and toxic intermediates in antibiotics degradation.

  • The production of superoxide dismutase (SOD) varied in Deinococcus radiophilus, the UV resistant bacterium, depending upon different phases of growth, UV irradiation, and superoxide treatment. A gradual increase in total SOD activity occurred up to the stationary phases. The electrophoretic resolution of the SOD in cell extracts of D. radiophilus at each growth phase revealed the occurrence of MnSOD throughout the growth phases. The SOD profiles of D. radiophilus at the exponential phase received oxidative stress by the potassium superoxide treatment or UV irradiation also revealed the occurrence of a single SOD. However, these treatments caused an increase in SOD activity. The data strongly suggest that D. radiophilus has only one species of SOD as a constitutive enzyme, which seems to be a membrane-associated protein.

  • Many countries and researchers in the lighting field have focused on the LED light source as a solution to energy savings and environmental pollution. The LED light source consumes less power, has a long life and is highly economical. It is vibration and shock-resistant, and environment friendly as well. But LED lighting has some problems. In particular, the photobiological safety of LED light sources is emerging as an issue. Ultraviolet radiation from the LED light source emitted directly to the human body over a long period of time is harmful. In this paper, UV radiation from white LED was measured. Finally, the LED light source emits UV radiation, but it is relatively small when compared to others.

  • This study evaluated the degradation characteristics of FRP by ultraviolet (UV) rays and applied a UV-resistant coating to prevent the degradation of the surface of these sculptures. As a result of the degradation caused by UV rays, there were slight changes in the FRP surface and contact angle. The chromaticity sharply increased in the early phase of degradation. After applying the coating to the FRP, no significant surface changes were observed. However, it had lower changes in color as compared to the uncoated specimen, so it was verified that the control of discoloration could be possible. Some changes in the gloss and contact angle were observed depending on the extent of degradation, but the UV coating agent remained relatively stable. Analysis of the infrared light spectrum showed that there were almost no chemical changes, and it could be concluded that the coating treatment prevented degradation for a certain period. This study investigated the degradation of FRP used as materials in artwork exposed to UV rays, and it was found that there was a delay in the onset of degradation in the FRP with the UV-resistant coating when compared to the uncoated FRP.

  • Elevated near-UV radiation, containing a large amount of UV-B and a small amount of UV-C, inhibited the development of leaves and tillers, the increase in biomass production, the elongation of plant height, the photosynthetic rate and the chlorophyll content in rice plants in a phytotron. Elevated UV-B radiation filtered through cellulose diacetate film or UV-31 cut filter (transmission down to 290 nm) similarly suppressed each growth component above. Near-UV radiation-caused injuries were alleviated either by elevated CO$_2$ atmosphere or by exposure to high irradiance-visible radiation. On the basis of these findings, we examined cultivar differences in the resistance to UV radiation-caused injuries among 198 rice cultivars belonging to 5 Asian rice ecotypes ( aus, aman, boro, bulu and tjeleh) from the Bengal region and Indonesia and to Japanese lowland and upland rice groups. It was shown that .various cultivars having different sensitivities to the effects of near-UV radiation were involved in the same ecotype and the same group, and that the Japanese lowland rice group and the boro ecotype were more resistant. Among Japanese lowland rice cultivars, Sasanishiki (one of the leading varieties in Japan) exhibited more resistance to near-UV radiation, while Norin 1 showed less resistance, although these two cultivars are closely related. It was thus indicated that the resistance to the inhibitory effects of near-UV radiation of rice cultivars is not simply due to the difference in the geographical situation where rice cultivars are cultivated. From the genetic analysis of resistance to the inhibitory effects of UV radiation on growth of rice using F$_2$ plants generated by reciprocally crossing Sasanishiki and Norin 1 and F$_3$ lines generated by self-fertilizing F$_2$ plants, it was evident that the resistance to the inhibitory effects of elevated near-UV radiation in these rice plants was controlled by recessive polygenes.

  • This study is on development of UV-cured hard coating compounds which have more improved abrasion resistance than existing UV-cured urethane-acrylic resin, to prevent a surface of a widely used PVC tile as a constructive material from being scratched. To make a high abrasion resistant hard coating solution compared to UV-cured urethane-acrylic resin which has no abrasion resistance and been used for PVC tiles, we added powder substances of different abrasion resistant level, $Al_2O_3$(Al-160SG-3), $Al(OH)_3$(SH-8W), $SiO_2$(KS-5000), etc., to the resin, changing their contents from 10% to 30% against quantities of resin, and compounded it using Ring-Mill. After coating PVC tiles with the hard coating solution using bar-coating method that can adjust a thickness, we estimated some surface properties-abrasion resistance, pencil hardness, adhesive power, thickness of coating, and so on. As a result, a hard coating solution added 30% $Al_2O_3$ powder to the resin had the finest surface properties-the first grade in abrasion resistance, H in pencil hardness, 100% in adhesive power, and a hard coating solution which showed excellent solidity and abrasion resistance has smaller particle size, higher powder content, and thicker coating thickness.

  • The purpose of this study was to monitor bacteria present in raw water and to investigate the effect of ozone, UV and combined ozone/UV processes for inactivating bacteria. Both polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-fragment length polymorphic analysis (PRA) and PCR-sequence analysis (PSA) were applied for the simultaneous analysis of numerous bacteria species present in each tested water, such as drinking water (DRW), drinking water source (DRWS) and sewage effluent water (SEW). According to the result, the number of detected bacteria species was zero in DRW, 58 in DRWS and 13 in SEW. After treatment of the each process, the ozone/UV process was the most successful for inactivating almost all bacteria. However, it was found that Flavobacterium sp., Pseudomonas sp. and Beta proteobacterium sp. had strong resistant to all tested processes, requiring further detailed study.

  • We examined the effects of supplementary ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation on the changes in synthesis and degradation of ribulose-I, 5-biphosphate carboxylase /oxygenase (Rubisco) and light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b binding protein of PSII (LHCII), as well as mRNA levels for small and large subunits of Rubisco (rbcS and rbcL, respectively) and LHCII (cab) with leaf age in UV-sensitive rice (Norin I) and UV-resistant rice (Sasanishiki). Both Rubisco and LHCII were actively synthesized until the leaf had fully expanded, and then decreased with leaf age. Synthesis of Rubisco, but not LHCII, was significantly suppressed by UV-B in Norin 1. The degradation of Rubisco was enhanced by UV-B around the time of the leaf maturation in the two cultivars. The levels of rbcS and rbcL were reduced by UV-B at the early leaf stages after emergence in both cultivars. The level of cab was first present at the highest level in the two cultivars, but drastically decreased due to UV-B treatment immediately after leaf emergence in Norin 1. It was proved that synthesis and degradation of Rubisco and LHCII greatly changed with leaf age: Rubisco synthesis was significantly suppressed by supplementary UV-B radiation at the transcription step during the early leaf stages. It was also suggested that the difference between the two rice cultivars in sensitivity to UV-B in the synthesis of Rubisco might be due to the specific suppression not only after transcription but also at transcription.
