  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the degradation characteristics of oxalic acid and citric acid by $UV/H_2O_2$ oxidation. For this purpose, the effects of pH, $H_2O_2$ dosage and the concentration of each compounds on the degradation of oxalic acid and citric acid by $UV/H_2O_2$ were investigated. Oxalic acid was effectively degraded at the wavelength of 254 nm, while the degradation efficiency of citric acid was very low at the same wavelength. It was also found that both organic substances were not degraded by the injection of $H_2O_2$ only. The optimum pH of degradation of oxalic acid and citric acid was 4 and 4 to 6, respectively. In the case of $UV/H_2O_2$ oxidation, the degradation efficiency was increased by increasing $H_2O_2$ dosage. The degradation efficiency decreased when the dose of $H_2O_2$ exceeds 200 mg/L. From these results, it can be concluded that the optimum reaction conditions for the degradation of oxalic acid and citric acid by $UV/H_2O_2$ oxidation were pH 4 and 200mg/L of $H_2O_2$.

  • This study was performed to provide basic information for evaluating the efficiency and applicable extent of photocatalysis for the treatment of swine wastewater. Acid area was more efficient than neutral and alkalic areas in wastewater treatment, and level of pH3 was the most effective and the treatment efficiency continually increased as the amount of photocatalyst was increased. When the photocatalyst was increased, $TCOD_{Mn}$ was removed faster than chromaticity. Pollutants were more effectively eliminated with both UV light illumination and $TiO_2$ than with either UV or $TiO_2$ alone. The removal efficiency was increased with the addition of $H_2O_2$ as an oxidant, but the removal efficiency was decreased with over an dosage of $H_2O_2$. The optimal dosage of $H_2O_2$ was 200 mg/L. Continuous injection of $H_2O_2$ was required for effective oxidation.

  • The changes in $UV_{254}$ and concentrations of $H_2O_2$ formed by ozonation of aqueous humic acid in ozone/high pH, peroxone process and in the presence of radical scavenger, $HCO_3{^-}$ were investigated. This study confirmed that the formation of $H_2O_2$ by ozonation may undergo different reaction pathways compared to those of $UV_{254}$ reduction in the degradation of the humic acid. The concentration of $H_2O_2$ produced by ozonation was found to be increased with decreasing pH of the sample solution due to the higher stability of ozone molecules at acidic conditions. On the while, $UV_{254}$ reduction was found to be higher at alkaline conditions or larger amount of $H_2O_2$ additions as a radical promoter in which the producing of ${\cdot}OH$, ${\cdot}HO_2$ radicals can be more favorable. From the results, it has been suggested that the formation of $H_2O_2$ by ozonation depends mainly on the direct reactions of ozone with humic acid molecules, while $UV_{254}$ reduction is affected by both the indirect reactions of the radicals and direct reactions of ozone with humic acid.

  • In this study, we investigated the UV/H2O2 process to treat organic compound-spilled water. In consideration of usage and properties, benzene, toluene, phenol, and methyl ethyl ketone were selected as representative organic compounds. The selected material was first removed by natural volatilization and aeration that simulated the pretreatment of the prcoess. After that, UV/H2O2 oxidation experiments were conducted under various H2O2 concentration conditions. Benzene and toluene were mostly volatilized before reaching the oxidation process due to high volatility. Considering the volatility, oxidation experiments were performed at an initial concentration of 5 mg/L for benzene and toluene. The UV/H2O2 oxidation process achieved 100% of benzene and toluene removal after 20 minutes under all hydrogen peroxide concentration conditions. The phenol was rarely removed from the volatile experiments and oxidation tests were performed at an initial concentration of 50 mg/L. The process showed 100 % phenol removal after 30 minutes under 0.12 v/v% of hydrogen peroxide concentration condition. Methyl ethyl ketone was removed 58 % after 2 hours of volatile experiments. The process showed 99.7% Methyl ethyl ketone removal after 40 minutes under 0.08 v/v% of hydrogen peroxide concentration condition. It was confirmed that the UV/H2O2 process showed high decomposition efficiency for the four selected organic compounds, and identified the amount of hydrogen peroxide in classified organic contaminants.

  • This study investigated a method to determine an efficient operating condition for the $UV/H_2O_2$ process. The OH radical scavenging factor is the most important factor to predict the removal efficiency of the target compound and determine the operating condition of the $UV/H_2O_2$ process. To rapidly and simply measure the scavenging factor, Rhodamine B (RhB) was selected as a probe compound. Its reliability was verified by comparing it with a typical probe compound (para-chlorobenzoic acid, pCBA); the difference between RhB and pCBA was only 1.1%. In a prediction test for the removal of Ibuprofen, the RhB method also shows a high reliability with an error rate of about 5% between the experimental result and the model prediction using the measured scavenging factor. In the monitoring result, the scavenging factor in the influent water of the $UV/H_2O_2$ pilot plant was changed up to 200% for about 8 months, suggesting that the required UV dose could be increased about 1.7 times to achieve 90% caffeine removal. These results show the importance of the scavenging factor measurement in the $UV/H_2O_2$ process, and the operating condition could simply be determined from the scavenging factor, absorbance, and information pertaining to the target compound.

  • As well as arising the concern about pesticides known as a Carcinogenic or endocrine disorder substrates, magnitude was increased of reducing pesticides in soil or water. In this work, removals of residual pesticides on surface of solid phase were attempted by the photooxidation process with hydrogen peroxide. The optimum conditions for the removals of benomyl (carbamatic pesticide) chlorothalonil (Organochoric pesticide) were 350nm UV wavelegth and 20% (v/v) hydrogen peroxide solution as oxidant. Removals are negligible when UV radiation or the supply of hydrogen peroxide are solely applied on the target compoounds. Removal rates of the pesticides are accelerated by UV radiation with hydrogen addition. After 20 min of the treatment, about $2{\mu}g/cm^2$ of benomyl and $1,88{\mu}g/cm^2$ of chlorothalonil were disappeared on the surface of the solid phase.

  • Fenton oxidation method using hydrogen peroxide is an eco-friendly oxidation method used in water treatment and soil restoration. When removing pollutants by this method, it is quite important to properly regulate the concentration of hydrogen peroxide according to the concentration of the contaminants. In this study, electrochemical biosensors using HRP (horseradish peroxidase) enzymes were manufactured and studies were conducted on the activity of enzymes and the detection characteristics of hydrogen peroxide. HRP were electro deposited with chitosan and AuNP on the working electrode surface of the SPCE (Screen Printed Carbon Electrode). Then, the fixation of enzymes was confirmed using the cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The activity of HRP enzymes was also identified from chronoamperometry (CA) and UV spectroscopy. After immersing the biosensor in PBS solution the current generated from electrodes by titrating hydrogen peroxide was measured from CA analysis. The generated current increased linearly for the concentration of hydrogen peroxide, and a calibration curve was derived that could predict the concentration of hydrogen peroxide from the current.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the removal effects of the color, nutritive salts and other pollutants on piggery slurry by advanced oxidation process (AOP) system. The experimental AOP system was designed to treat 300 L of piggery slurry per hour. To enhance oxidizing power of the experimental APO system, a ultraviolet irradiation system and the ultrasonic system were attached to the AOP system. With 5 min ultrasonic treatment, COD, SS and T-N concentrations were changed from 210, 820, and 309 to 200, 760, and 262 mg/L, respectively. With 10 min ultrasonic treatment, SS and T-N concentrations tended to decrease but T-P concentration was not changed. With the treatment of both ozone and ultrasonic waves for 30 min, COD, SS, T-N and T-P decreased from 238, 900, 400, and 5 to 165, 540, 263, and 4 mg/L, respectively. With the treatment of both ozone and ultraviolet irradiation for 30 min, COD, SS, T-N and T-P decreased from 321, 340, 204, and 15 to 151, 140, 111, and 7 mg/L, respectively, and color was changed from 4,344 to 624.
