This paper discusses the structural design and analysis of a 6,000 meters depth-rated capable deep-sea unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) system. The UUV system is currently under development by Maritime and Ocean Engineering Research Institute(MOERI), Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI). The UUV system is composed of three vehicles - a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) and a Launcher - which include underwater equipment. The dry weight of the system exceeds 3 tons hence it is necessary to carry out the optimal design of structural system to ensure the minimum weight and sufficient space within the frame for the convenient use of the embedded equipments. In this paper, therefore, the structural design and analysis of the ROV and launcher frame system were carried out, using the optimizing process. The cylindrical pressure vessels for the ROV were designed to resist the extreme pressure of 600 bars, based on the finite element analysis. The collapse pressure for the cylindrical pressure vessels was also checked through a theoretical analysis.

In this paper, we propose an underwater localization scheme through the fusion of an inertial navigation system (INS) and the received signal strength (RSS) of electromagnetic (EM) wave sensors to guarantee precise localization performance with high sampling rates. In this localization scheme, the INS predicts the pose of the unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) by dead reckoning at every step, and the RF sensors corrects the UUV position functions using the Earth-fixed reference when the UUV is located in underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSN). The localization scheme and state modeling were conducted in the extended Kalman filter framework, and UUV localization experiments were conducted in a basin environment. The scheme achieved reliable localization accuracy during long-term navigation, demonstrating the feasibility of exploiting EM wave attenuation as Earth-fixed reference sensors.

Due to its unmanned feature and some of being matured underwater technologies, UUV(Unmanned Undersea Vehicle) is increasingly considered as a utility player in today's battle-field. The operational benefit of submarine-based UUV operation could be enormous yet the integration challenges are significant, particularly for most of small conventionally-powered submarines. In this paper, we consider UUV operational methodology via the conventional submarine's torpedo tube. Two previous attempts having been done to retrieve the UUV through torpedo tube are reviewed, and their pros and cons are also analyzed. Then, an alternative option is proposed for UUV operation via torpedo tube. In addition, some of practical challenges are also discussed in the paper.
This paper presents experimental results for the vibration characteristics of the small unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) OPKO 300, which was designed and manufactured by Daewoo ship and Marine Engineering Ltd. The autonomy of UUVs has led to an increase in their use in scientific, military, and commercial areas because their autonomy makes it possible for UUVs to be utilized instead of humans in hazardous missions such as mine countermeasure missions (MCM). Since it is impossible to use devices based on electromagnetic waves to gather information in an underwater environment, only sonar systems, which use sound waves, can be used in underwater environments, and their performance can strongly affect the autonomy of a UUV. Since a thruster system, which combines a motor and propeller in a single structure, is widely used as the propulsion system of a UUV and is mounted on the outside of a UUV’s stern, it can generate vibration, which can be transferred throughout the shell of the UUV from its stern to its bow. The transferred vibration can affect the performance of various sonar systems such as side-scan sonar or forward-looking sonar. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate the effect of the transferred vibration of the UUV on the sonar systems. Even if various numerical methods were used to analyze the vibration problem of a UUV, it would be hard to predict the vibration phenomena of a UUV at the initial design stage. In this work, an experimental study using OKPO 300 and an impact hammer was carried out to analyze the vibration feature of a small real UUV in the air. The frequency response function of the vibration based on the experimental results is presented.

This paper shows added mass and inertia can be acquired from the pure heaving motion and pure pitching motion respectively. A Vertical Planar Motion Mechanism (VPMM) test for the spheroid-type Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) was compared with a theoretical calculation and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis in this paper. The VPMM test has been carried out at a towing tank with specially manufactured equipment. The linear equations of motion on the vertical plane were considered for theoretical calculation, and CFD results were obtained by commercial CFD package. The VPMM test results show good agreement with theoretical calculations and the CFD results, so that the applicability of the VPMM equipment for an underwater vehicle can be verified with a sufficient accuracy.
For the accurate estimation of the position and orientation of a UUV (unmanned underwater vehicle), a low-cost AHRS (attitude heading reference system) was developed using a low-cost IMU (inertial measurement unit) sensor which provides information on the 3D acceleration, 3D turning rate and 3D earth-magnetic field data in the object coordinate system. The main hardware system is composed of an IMU sensor (ADIS16405) and TMS320F28335, which is coded with an extended kalman filter algorithm with a 50-Hz sampling frequency. Through an experimental gimbal device, good estimation performance for the pitch, roll, and yaw angles of the developed AHRS was verified by comparing to those of a commercial AHRS called the MTi system. The experimental results are here presented and analyzed.

This paper demonstrates the benefit of using MOOS-IvP in the development of control system for Unmanned Underwater Vehicles(UUV). The demand for autonomy in UUVs has significantly increased due to the complexity in missions to be performed. Furthermore, the increased number of sensors and actuators that are interconnected through a network has introduced a need for a middleware platform for UUVs. In this context, MOOS-IvP, which is an open source software architecture, has been developed by several researchers from MIT, Oxford University, and NUWC. The MOOS software is a communication middleware based on the publish-subscribe architecture allowing each application to communicate through a MOOS database. The IvP Helm, which is one of the MOOS modules, publishes vehicle commands using multi-objective optimization in order to implement autonomous decision making. This paper explores the benefit of MOOS-IvP in the development of control software for UUVs by using a case study with an auto depth control system based on self-organizing fuzzy logic control. The simulation results show that the design and verification of UUV control software based on MOOS-IvP can be carried out quickly and efficiently thanks to the reuse of source codes, modular-based architecture, and the high level of scalability.

Underwater acoustic sensor array can detect acoustic signal in underwater and the sensor array can be mounted in each left, right or front side of the UUV(Unmanned Underwater Vehicle). The sensor array could be conformal array and effected turbulent boundary layer flow noise. Therefore, in this paper numerical simulations were performed to know the how the outer flow noise affect the hydrophone which embedded in the elastomer. Corcos wall pressure model was used as turbulent boundary layer flow noise and this model was applied to the frequency density function. Characteristics of transfer function according the kx wave number were simulated and design parameters were thickness of elastomer, density, and modulus of elasticity. Based on the simulation results when increasing the thickness of elastomer noise reduction was increased. This results can be applied to the design of conformal array of UUV.
The increased use of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV) has led to the development of alternative navigational methods that do not employ acoustic beacons and dead reckoning sensors. This paper describes a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) scheme that uses range sonars mounted on a small UUV. A SLAM scheme is an alternative navigation method for measuring the environment through which the vehicle is passing and providing the relative position of the UUV. A technique for a SLAM algorithm that uses several ranging sonars is presented. This technique utilizes an unscented Kalman filter to estimate the locations of the UUV and surrounding objects. In order to work efficiently, the nearest neighbor standard filter is introduced as the data association algorithm in the SLAM for associating the stored targets returned by the sonar at each time step. The proposed SLAM algorithm was tested by experiments under various three degrees of freedom motion conditions. The results of these experiments showed that the proposed SLAM algorithm was capable of estimating the position of the UUV and the surrounding objects and demonstrated that the algorithm will perform well in various environments.
