  • As the number of personal computers installed in vehicles increases, a touchpad often used in a labtop computer can be used for the control of an in-vehicle information system (IVIS). Using a touchpad to control the system allows the user to select among large amount of information with a single touch of dragging. For safety and convenience of a driver, the touchpad could be placed on a steering wheel. This research is designed to calculate the most efficient Control-Response Ratio (C/R ratio) for the menu interaction of a touchpad on a steering wheel. Since the menu pointer's rate of movement and proper C/R ratio is determined by the amount of selected information, the amount of displayed information and the movement of a menu pointer was chosen to be independent variables. The dependent variables are a user's preference and task completion time. Two factor full factorial within subject design was used 16 subjects. The investigation revealed that the amount of selected information increased with increasing C/R ratio. The movement of the pointer became slower as the amount of information increased. The best C/R ratio was calculated for each amount of information and preference regression of the user's preference was drawn accordingly. Through this research, the automobile interior designer can benefit from the guidelines suggested for the touchpad control.

  • FIDO(Fast IDentity Online) technology is expanding very rapidly which can replace traditional password-based authentication with biometrics technology[1,7]. FIDO provides convenient authentication with biometrics technology and secure key management with smart card technology, but it does not provide user identification, thus traditional user identification technology should be used before a FIDO device is registered to a FIDO server. K-FIDO[3] is an approach to implement FIDO and certificate-based authentication technology into a single device that user can utilize certificate-based authentication in initial registration of FIDO device to FIDO server. It is expected that very shortly users will own and use multiple K-FIDO devices. If we consider the traditional approach of copying single certificate to multiple devices or issuing independent certificate to each device, there will be many complex problems. In this paper we propose more secure and convenient key management technology in multiple K-FIDO device scenario using self-extended certification[4].

  • A long-term water quality study has been initiated by the Korean Ministry of Environment(MOE) - The G-7 Project--in cooperation with two national research institutes, an University research tn and a consulting firm. This study includes the development of computer software for total water quality management system, so called ISWQM (Integrated System of Water Quality Management). ISWQM includes four major components: a GIS database; two artificial intelligence (AI) based expert systems to estimate pollutant loadings and to provide cost-effective wastewater treatment system for small and medium size urban areas; and computer programs to integrate the database and expert systems. ISWQM is to provide user-friendly Decision Support System (DSS) for water quality planners. A GIS was used to create spatial database which stores all the necessary data to n DSS. GIS was also used to integrate the four components of ISWQM from data creation to decision making through Graphic User Interface (GUI). The results from the first phase of this study showed that GIS would provide an effective tool to build DSS using expert system.

  • This study investigated perceived discomforts and those reasons of the young and middle-aged, the aged, the disabled and the pregnant in various daily activities, and elicited universal design factors based on human capacities (physical, sensory, cognitive and affective). A total of eighty people (twenty subjects for each user group) participated in one-to-one interviews about thirty six items of daily activities. A degree of discomfort of the daily activities was measured using Borg's CR10 scale. As a result, the disabled and the pregnant complained about almost all of the daily activities, and their degrees of discomforts were significantly higher than those of the youth and middle-aged and the aged. However, the youth and middle-aged and the aged only complained about some specific items. The major reasons of discomforts were related to physical and affective capabilities in general, where the detailed reasons of each user group were comparatively different. Finally, the universal design factors were elicited for each daily activity item based on the results of each user group. This study can be used to understand the discomforts and characteristics of the aged, the disabled and the pregnant in the various daily activities. The universal design factors elicited can also be applied to design related products and facilities universally.
