  • Objective: The present study developed a user-centered 3D virtual liver surgery planning (VLSP) system called Dr. Liver to provide preoperative information for safe and rational surgery. Background: Preoperative 3D VLSP is needed for patients' safety in liver surgery. Existing systems either do not provide functions specialized for liver surgery planning or do not provide functions for cross-check of the accuracy of analysis results. Method: Use scenarios of Dr. Liver were developed through literature review, benchmarking, and interviews with surgeons. User interfaces of Dr. Liver with various user-friendly features (e.g., context-sensitive hotkey menu and 3D view navigation box) was designed. Novel image processing algorithms (e.g., hybrid semi-automatic algorithm for liver extraction and customized region growing algorithm for vessel extraction) were developed for accurate and efficient liver surgery planning. Usability problems of a preliminary version of Dr. Liver were identified by surgeons and system developers and then design changes were made to resolve the identified usability problems. Results: A usability testing showed that the revised version of Dr. Liver achieved a high level of satisfaction ($6.1{\pm}0.8$ out of 7) and an acceptable time efficiency ($26.7{\pm}0.9 min$) in liver surgery planning. Conclusion: Involvement of usability testing in system development process from the beginning is useful to identify potential usability problems to improve for shortening system development period and cost. Application: The development and evaluation process of Dr. Liver in this study can be referred in designing a user-centered system.

  • With the increase in a number of access technologies and data rates, a continuous connection among different networks is demand of the future wireless networks. In the last decade, user connectivity among different access networks remained a challenging job. Therefore, in this article, we proposed a user-centric and user-perspective based network selection mechanism for fast handover management in heterogeneous wireless networks. The proposed scheme selects the most appropriate network among available networks on the basis of resources i.e. cost, data rate, and link quality. Initially, we load the Media Independent Information Service (MIIS) with the information of cost and data rate provided by different network operators. Similarly, Mobile Node (MN) is also loaded with the user preferred cost and data rate for different applications. The MN obtains the information of cost and data rate from MIIS server upon a predefined threshold, and make a decision for handover according to its current cost and data rate. Furthermore, we employ an optimal threshold mechanism for initiation of the handover execution phase to minimize false handover indications. The proposed scheme is based on a survey for network selection and its implementation in C programming language to validate its performance and accuracy. The simulation result shows that the proposed scheme performs superior then the schemes present in the current literature.

  • The aim of this paper is to propose a communication middleware which makes it possible to easily and efficiently develop the networking support for multi-user applications. Even though existing middleware and development tools provides lots of functionalities to realize distributed applications, they are purely low-level services passing the most development efforts to developers, or too specialized for a specific application. It brings a challenging issue of how the middleware supports general and efficient high-level mechanisms. To meet different networking and interaction requirements of multi-user applications, we propose various schemes to provide the communication architecture, the user membership management, the content transmission mechanism and the event management. Our middleware provides developers with application-level APIs and configuration files so that the different interaction requirements of a multi-user application can be easily handled in the developers' point of view.

  • With the development of sensor networks and Internet of Things (IoT) technology, personalized context information has been collected and customized services can be provided to related users. Currently, the context information system is at the level of analyzing and recognizing user specific behavioral characteristics and generating events. In the IoT environment, IoT products themselves should provide the required services with minimal user intervention, rather than acting for a specific purpose. In this paper, to minimize the user intervention in the IoT environment, we implemented an automatic attendance recognition system using context information from the ECG based on beacon. Environment of provided specific Context information, we compared and analyzed the degree of user intervention among the authentication method using ECG sensor in this paper and the existing authentication method. As a result of the analysis, we confirmed that the system implemented in this paper minimizes user intervention.

  • Due to the increasing use of Internet and spread of ubiquitous environment the security of private information became an important issue. For this reason, many suggestions have been made in order to protect the privacy of users. In the study of authentication system using a smart card which is one of the methods for protecting private information, the main idea is to offer user anonymity. In 2004, Das et al. suggested an authentication system that guarantees anonymity by using a dynamic ID for the first time. However, this scheme couldn't guarantee complete anonymity as the identity of the user became revealed at log-in phase. In 2005, Chien at al. suggested a authentication system that guarantees anonymity, but this was only safe to the outsider(attacker). In this paper, we propose a scheme that enables the mutual authentication between the user and the sewer by using a smart card. For the protection of the user privacy, we suggest an efficient user authentication system that guarantees perfect anonymity to both the outsider and remote server.

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to analyze the user requirements and developer requirements in virtual reality(VR), and suggest ways to increase the satisfaction of users who experience virtual reality. Specifically, focused on experience store of VR as a distribution retailer, user requirements were analyzed according to the results of previous research that the characteristics of Affordance, Presence, and Head Mounted Display (HMD) affect user satisfaction. Research, design, data, and methodology - Based on previous studies, in this study, we analyzed the importance of immerse, interaction, perception, and presence for the satisfaction of the user through the questionnaire, and the user experiences virtual reality (VR) The importance of HMD, Presence, Affordance, and experience satisfaction were analyzed. Based on this, we analyzed the user requirements and the developer requirements based on the questionnaires and interviews of the experts, starting from the user's desire or preference using QFD technique. Results - As a result of the analysis, the development factors that occupied a big part in the virtual reality field appeared to be visual. In detail, this showed that there was a lack of sense of presence for users. This should be improved. This paper shows that the requirements for visual, auditory, and tactile development are necessary. For the satisfaction of the users of virtual reality (VR) users, it is necessary to develop them according to their priority in consideration of importance and difficulty in the future. Conclusions - In this study, it was suggested that development according to priority should be considered, considering the difficulty level. Based on the results of this study, the following suggestions are made. First, we tried to search the list of user requirements as much as possible, but it is likely to change due to the development of VR technology. Therefore, it is necessary for developers to continually supplement user requirements with recent research literature. Second, development priorities according to difficulty level should be considered. This aspect should be considered in the actual VR development process, so if the numerical value of the difficulty is calculated, it should be presented in the research.

  • This study aims to develop measures to turn former users and non-users of public libraries back into users by understanding the differences between the user, former user and non-user groups in terms of their perceptions to public libraries, as well as the differences between these groups in their perceptions regarding the factors to non-use of public libraries. A literature review and statistical analysis of the results from a questionnaire survey were conducted to identify the differences. The results from the statistical analysis showed significant differences between the user, former user and non-user groups in terms of their perceptions to public libraries and the non-use factors. From the results, we could categorize the factors into common non-use factors, non-use-only factors, and use interrupt factors, and we develop suggestions to improve the factors in order to move non-users and former users to frequent users of the public libraries.
