  • Soil is the most important factor in natural environment for bio-diversity. Urbanization and development of city devastate urban soil by the fraternization of green network and run off pollution. In these facts, preservation of soil is the main issue in maintain of quality urban environment. In order to handle this issue, the gold network that link fragment soil patches is considered in maintain quality soil. This study researched the infiltration Treebox design technique based on the Low Impact Development. This technique suggest reduction of impervious area of the soil due to urbanization. The main concept of this study is encourage more permeable surfaces in urban area by using a infiltration planter. The function of the planter is hold run off as much as possible from intensive rainfall, and utilizes it in drought season. Also, this planter provides fertile soil for organism habitat by keeping appropriate moisture supplying.

  • To simulate the mechanism of runoffs on seall watersheds, the ILLUDAS and the ILSD models are used in this study'. The transferability of these models to Korean watersheds and significant factors that could affect their applicability were examined through the analyzation of the hydrographs generated from runoff simulations. The runoff hydrographs from the watersheds with different urbanization rates are also simulated to investigate the degree of variation of the peak discharges the runoff rates, the runoff volumes and other hydrological factors related with urban runoff.

  • Water cycle analysis was performed for Gunja basin located in metropolitan Seoul using Aquacycle model in order to assess the problems of urban water cycle. From the water cycle analysis of Gunja basin, it was found that 75% of total rainfall occurred in the form of surface runoff, and groundwater recharge only accounted for about 7%. This suggests serious distortion of water cycle which can be attributed to urbanization. Feasibility analysis of reuse scenarios such as rainwater use and wastewater reuse was then performed to examine their influences on improving the water cycle. From the analysis of water reuse options, it was shown that imported water supply savings of 13% can be achieved through rainwater use, and water supply savings of 31% through wastewater reuse.

  • The rapid urbanization in developing countries has caused trasportation problems that need to be solved. For that reason, the study evaluates the potential of cycling in the densely populated part of Kathmandu valley. Slopes and existing roads have been applied as the input cost rasters for finding the shortest cost routes between stations. By taking the average cycling velocity, time to travel from station to destination were compared with the average commuting time in the public transportation. The result comes out as similar time with the public transportation. Although the cycling seems potential replacement for public transportation commuters, in fact, there are some setbacks needed to be supported by the government to make it reality in future.

  • Now we have faced to two fundamental population problems: The one is over-population problem in proportion to the nation's total area, 99,434 $km^2$, and the other is unbalanced population distributions in the provincial districts of administration (16th local governments). For example, the population density of Seoul city is 16,335 persons, and the nations population density of South Korea is 464 persons for 1 km$^2$. At the first part of this study, we introduced the origins and historical back grounds of Formal Demorgraphy. And the second part, we suggest some useful indicators of urbanization of rural populations in terms of Gini's Coefficients of Concentration. As the result, we can show that the ecological Gini's Coefficients of Concentration, during the periods covered by this study, have been increasing extraordinary: 0.349, 0.433, 0.532, 0.581, 0.633 and 0.626 in 1970, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000 A.D. respectively. However, the trend of urbanization (concentration of population) of Korean population has been the relative equilibrium state of 0.63 from 1995 to 2000 A.D.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the differences of symbolic consumption of adolescents, and the effects of demographic factors on the symbokic consumption in clothing. Data were administered to 957 adolescents in middle, high school, and college students living in Seoul, Chonju, Sunchon, Yousu, and Kwangyang from May to June 1997. For analysis of the data, factor analysis, t-test, one-way ANOCA, duncan's multiple range test, and multiple regression analysis were employed. The results of this study were summarized as follows. 1) Symbolic consumption in colthing were shown to have the significant differences accoding to age, gender, the level of urbanization, parent's education, father's occupation, social stratification groups. The higher the age, the level of urbanization, and parent's education, father's occupation, social stratification is, or the female, the higher is symbolic consumption in clothing. 2) According to the results of the regression analysis examining the rerlative influences of variables affecting symbolic consumption in clothing, the relative importance of the variables are in order of; income, gender, age, mother's education, residence, and their explanatory powere totalled 11.5%.

  • This paper discusses the change of land ownership in the urban historical core of Kyungju city in the Period of Japanese occupancy(1910-45) based on the analysis of land register records. Kyungju city was not designated for the cities controlled by urban planning law which was set up in 1912 and 1934. The major purpose of this paper is to clarify the urbanization process of a Korean local city where the formal urban planning projects were not carried out. The focus of the study is the increase of the Japanese landowners and Japanization of the landscape. In the very beginning of occupation, Japanese already owned about 8% of the total land of the city centre where the old Kyungju castle had been located. The ratio of the land owned by Japanese went up to more or less 70% at the end of World war II. The process which the urban core had been replaced for the Japanese is very clearly traced from the analysis of a land register records.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the transforming characteristics of village at the urban fringe, which are influenced by the urbanization. Three areas in the urban fringe are selected for the case study. The changed conditions in the spatial structure of those areas are reviewed through following factors : street system, an entrance of village, a boundary of village, community facility, development density, housing type, building use. The transforming characteristics are analyzed as a result of the research. In result, the community facility, development density, housing type and building use are changed largly in the transforming characteristics.

  • Ansan city in the coastal area of the mid-western Korea is known as a newly industrialized city(73.44$Km^2$, 127, 000 persons), with the increase rate of 27.8% in population and mean density of 1, 732 persons/$Km^2$. According to the census of the city(1986), it consists of cultivated field(36.8%), forest(34.2%), industrial area(7.4%), residential area(4.1%) and others(12.5%). The forest vegetation in the city is composed of four associations and two subassociations as follows; Pinus rigida, Pinus densiflora-Rhododendron mucronulatum, Quercus mongolica-Rhododendron mucronulatum and Robinia pseudo-acacia asociation, and Quercus mongolica-Corylus sieboldiana var. mandshurica and Robinia pseudoacacia-Alnus hirsuta subassociation. Various environmental conditions have been changed with the progress of urbanization of the city, since 1977. For example, a heat island phenomenon, which is the air temperature of 2 or 3$^{\circ}C$ higher in the central area than that of the boundary area, and floral changes caused by air pollutants such as decreasing bryophyte species along increasing SO$_2$ concentration.

  • Most of the cities and countries have distressed themselves about the urban social problem caused by the concentration of industry and population. Especially, disorderly expansion of cities and infrastructure improvement in rapid urbanization have also come into question. For this reason, proven urban planning facilities and tightened regulation on city planning are indispensible to solve these serious problems that we face. There are lots of similar studies to verify how to cope with a rapid urbanization.
