User-Created Contents Business : Taxonomy and its Implications (UCC 비즈니스 유형 및 활성화 장애요인 연구)

  • As the Internet is more embedded in people's lives, users draw on new Internet applications to express themselves through user-created contents(UCC). UCC is defined as content that is made publicly available over the Internet, reflects a certain amount of creative effort and is created outside of professional practices. This study describes the rapid growth of UCC as well as its increasing role in network-based communication. Based on the definition of UCC and the structure of emerging value chain, a taxonomy of UCC businesses is presented : UCC e-marketing business, UCC publishing business, UCC e-retailing business, and UCC development software business. This paper concludes with implications for platform and internet access providers.

  • UCC stands right in the center of web 2.0 era represented by share, participation, and openness. Moving picture UCC has been facilitated by If infrastructure advancement and sociocultural changes. Its prospect is expected to be brighter because presumers are spreading, cost of creating and distributing contents is greatly reduced, and there is going to appear more companies utilizing UCC in improving firm's competitiveness. In this paper, various UCC business models are analyzed and hot major issues faced by UCC industry such as profit model and copyright are discussed. In addition, strategies for UCC business success and opportunities and challenges confronted by UCC businesses are discussed.

Determinants of participation in UCC services (UCC 서비스 사용자의 참여수준 결정요인분석)

  • This study identifies key determinants of participation in UCC services. Incorporating insights from the flow theory, we examine the effects of psychological factors of social presence, self expression, arousal, and challenge as well as web-site characteristics variables of media easiness, contents usability, and immediateness. We have done a sample survey of internet users and collected 260 responses. Using Windows SPSS/PC 12.0 Package, we have performed statistical analyses including a correlation analysis, a factor analysis, and a multiple regression analysis. The result of the study is as follows. Psychological variables of perceived social presence, self expression, arousal, and challenge all show positive significant effect on participation in UCC service. Among web site characteristics, media easiness, which consists of a web structure that is easy-to-use, user friendliness, and personalized service, demonstrates a positive significant effect on participation in UCC services. Immediateness also has a positive significant effect. Some of the practical implications of the result are follows. We should improve user access to platforms of UCC service by opening up platforms. This will heighten perceived challenge which has the strongest influence on participation in UCC services. We need to focus on multimedia services and adjust to the cultural code of netizen who crave for visual expressions and on the spot on-line activities. Also suggested is that contributions made by participants need to be acknowledged through such provisions as profit sharing. Needs for individualized service, which is an aspect of media easiness, should also be addressed. Participants tend to value individuality while at the same time accepting broader trends. Information services need to be customized for individuals. In UCC centered internet businesses, netizen consumers are presumer. They are consumers and producers at the same time, and consumer needs should also be explored for the success of internet businesses.

  • Most of IT small businesses in Korea are companies which usually take parts from the technically advanced companies and assemble the parts into a complete whole for big companies. Intellectual property-related issue of IT small businesses in Korea is not the direct action or claim but the matter of contract concerning the 3rd party intellectual property infringement or the matter of each of the applicable law on the implied liability issues. Because bargaining power of the IT small businesses is not as big as the technically advanced companies, they can not receive explicit guarantees. Therefore, government-affiliated organization should concern about this matter of contract.

Potentials for Uniform Treatments of E-Commerce

  • The Internet is a wonderland that can be enjoyed by the young, old, and those in-between. It is also a vast commercial market where many contracts are formed every second. The Internet and E-Commerce have created new situations that have generated sweeping proposals for fundamental changes in contract law. During the first half of the 20th Century. when many businesses expanded their geographic scope, there was a tremendous desire for uniform treatment of contracts for the sale of goods throughout the U.S.A. and the whole world. That same dynamic is now occurring in E-Commerce. There is a general recognition of the desirability of uniform contract law to govern E-commerce, but to date that does not exist, though there are extensive proposals for reform of contract law on the Internet. E-Commerce is currently plagued by some of the same problems that led to the passage of the UCC. In the absence of uniform legislation, state-by-state differences are inevitable with respect to E-Commerce. State-by-state differences in E-Commerce contract law is widely viewed as undesirable. To deal with this problem, a number of uniform bills have been proposed including UCITA, UETA, and revisions to Article 2 of the UCC (Subpart B). The thrust of these uniform acts is to create legal parity between paper records and electronic records. There is considerable resistance by consumer groups to this parity and progress towards Passage of UCITA, UETA, and revised Article 2 has been slow. The UCITA covers licenses of computer software but does not cover the sale oil goods on the Internet. The scope of the UCITA includes computer software. multimedia interactive products, computer data and databases, and Internet and online information, The UETA deals comprehensively with E-Commerce and contract law. The UCC covers the sale of goods, which does not necessarily involve E-Commerce. The basic principles of contract law are modified to deal with Internet transactions. Intent is inferred from the operations of electronic agents and "signatures" can occur with a response to an invitation to click to accept.

  • These days, information technology is rapidly changing our society. Thus, considering such a business environment, many companies are seeking revenue models for successful business. In particular, digital content with the convergence of culture and information technology create revenue for businesses. For this reason, many companies are interested in UGC (User Generated Content), which refers to various kinds of publicly accessible media content that are produced by end-users. Thus, this paper analyzed the attributes of UGC and businesses using ubiquitous technology. From this analysis, this paper shows the critical success factors for UGC in ubiquitous business environments. In addition, this paper analyzed the attributes of UGC through the research of literature reviews and expert reviews. Based on this research, many companies are encouraged to develop successful digital content generated by end-users.
