This paper investigates the spillover effects(co-movements) between korean and U.S stock market by KOSPI and DJIA Index. Especially it compare to the pre- and post period of U.S. financial crisis resulted from sub-prime mortgage loan. The main results are as follows. First, the spillover effects of DJIA(U.S. market) to KOSPI(Korean market) are strong. This result accord with the former researches on this subject. Second, spillover effects are more strong after U.S. financial crisis. A possible reason for this phenomenon is a trend which the major investors such as foreign and institutional investors in domestic stock market have more attention to U.S. stock market. Third, the spillover effects appear in the opposite direction, that is KOSPI(Korean Stock Market) to DJIA(U.S. Stock Market). It seems to be the results of asian stock market's growing infIuences to European and U.S Markets.
This paper develops an investment algorithm based on Markowitz's Portfolio Selection Theory, using historical stock return data, and empirically evaluates the performance of the proposed algorithm in the U.S. and the Hong Kong stock markets. The proposed investment algorithm is empirically tested with the 30 constituents of Dow Jones Industrial Average in the U.S. stock market, and the 30 constituents of Hang Seng Index in the Hong Kong stock market. During the 6-year investment period, starting on the first trading day of 2006 and ending on the last trading day of 2011, growth rates of 12.63% and 23.25% were observed for Dow Jones Industrial Average and Hang Seng Index, respectively, while the proposed investment algorithm achieved substantially higher cumulative returns of 35.7% in the U.S. stock market, and 150.62% in the Hong Kong stock market. When compared in terms of Sharpe ratio, Dow Jones Industrial Average and Hang Seng Index achieved 0.075 and 0.155 each, while the proposed investment algorithm showed superior performance, achieving 0.363 and 1.074 in the U.S. and Hong Kong stock markets, respectively. Further, performance in the U.S. stock market is shown to be less sensitive to an investor's risk preference, while aggressive performance goals are shown to achieve relatively higher performance in the Hong Kong stock market. In conclusion, this paper empirically demonstrates that an investment based on a mathematical model using objective historical stock return data for constructing optimal portfolios achieves outstanding performance, in terms of both cumulative returns and Sharpe ratios.

Using a DCC - GARCH model analysis, this paper examines the existence of financial contagion from the U.S. stock market to the Vietnamese and the Philippine stock markets during the global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. We use daily data from the S&P 500 (U.S.), VN-Index (Vietnam), and the PSEi (the Philippines). As a result, there is no evidence of contagion from the U.S stock market to the Philippine stock market that can be found during global financial crisis, while the Vietnamese market is influenced by this effect. Besides, both these developing stock markets (the Vietnamese and Philippine stock markets) are influenced by the contagion effect in COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Another finding is that the contagion effect during the coronavirus pandemic crisis in Vietnam is smaller than that during the global financial crisis, however, the opposite is the case for the Philippines. It is noticed that the Philippines seems to be more affected by the contagion effect from the COVID-19 pandemic than Vietnam at the time of this study. Because financial contagion is important for monetary policy, asset pricing, risk measurement, and portfolio allocation, the findings in this paper may give some useful information for policymakers and investors.

This study investigates daily stock market anomalies in Chinese stock market, using nine most representative stock indices over an eleven year time period spanning from pre-financial crisis era to six years into the financial crisis. This research is the first to test the presence of the day of the week effect on stock returns in the Chinese stock exchanges during the financial crisis. We find that the day of week effects have been strongly significant in Chinese stock exchanges since 2004. However, unlike the previously found negative Monday effect and positive Friday effect in the U.S., Chinese stock market shows positive returns on Mondays and negative returns on Tuesdays. More importantly, the negative Tuesday effect is only significant after the inception of financial crisis. The results indicate a positive effect on Mondays and a negative effect on Thursdays. More importantly, we find a negative Tuesday effect during the financial crisis, which suggests a spillover of the Monday effect from the U.S. stock market. Our results shed some light on the degree of market efficiency in the largest emerging capital market in the world, and its increasingly close relationship with the U.S. capital market.
This study Investigates the short and long-run dynamic relationships between the domestic and U.S. stock markets for the period of declining stock prices. It Is well known that the domestic stock market variations are largely caused by the U.S. stock market movements. Multivariate causal tty test Is utilized to examine the lead-lag relationships among four stock prices of KOSPI and KOSDAQ In the domestic part and DOWJONES and NASDAQ In the U.S. part. When the stock prices tend to decrease In the long run, It Is found that both KOSPI and KOSDAQ have closer relations with NASDAQ than DOWJONES. When both of domestic stock markets are severely fluctuate, bidirectional causal relationships appear to exist between NASDAQ and each of KOSPI and KOSDAQ. On the other hand. when the domestic stock markets are relatively stable, unidirectional causality Is found to exist between NASDAQ and each of KOSPI and KOSDAQ. which is explicitly validated by the analysis of variance decomposition.
The purpose of this research is to understand the effects of Quality Management Award on stock prices movement and to examine the comparative advantages of quality award system in Korea and the U.S. This study compares the performances of QM Award companies in the stock market with those of the market index in both countries. We develop Korean Quality Award Index(KQA Index) based on the Baldrige Index of NIST in the U.S. We inspect three studies. Study 1 tests if the performances of MB Award winners and S&P500 index have a difference in the stock market. Study 2 tests if the performances of KQA winners and KOSPI(Korean Composite Stock Price Index) have a difference in the stock market. Study 3 tests if the performances of KQA winners and MB Award winners have a difference in the stock market. From the empirical tests, the performances of KQA winners are superior to those of KOSPI and the performances of MB Award winners are superior to those of S&P500 and the performances of MB Award winners are superior to those of KQA winners.
Purpose - This paper aims to analyze the relationship and correlation between the stock markets of Korea, the US, China, and Japan before and after the outbreak of COVID-19. Design/methodology/approach - This study conducted an empirical analysis using the stock market data from January 2016 to June 2023 for the representative market indices of Korea, the US, China, and Japan. The analysis employed the VAR model, Granger causality test, impulse response function, and variance decomposition. Findings - Analyzing the relationships of these stock markets before and after the outbreak of COVID-19, we obtained the following results. (i) The influence of the U.S. stock market was found to be absolute regardless of the COVID-19 period, and the rise in the U.S. stock market led to rises in other stock markets. (ii) The Chinese stock market had a significant negative impact on the U.S., Korean, and Japanese stock markets before COVID-19, but this influence disappeared after COVID-19. This suggests that the Chinese market exhibited unique characteristics different from the global market after COVID-19. (iii) Analyzing the period excluding the first quarter of 2020, when global stock market volatility was extremely high due to the spread of COVID-19, we found that the results were very similar to the analysis including the first quarter of 2020. Therefore, it is difficult to argue that the increased uncertainty during this period distorted the relationships among the stock markets of these four countries. Research implications or Originality - We anticipate that these findings will offer valuable insights for both individual and institutional investors, aiding them in portfolio diversification and risk mitigation.
Purpose - The primary objective of this article is to investigate the impact of U.S. monetary policy on institutional / individual / foreign investor reactions in the Korean stock market. Design/methodology/approach - This study employs a high frequency event study methodology to identify U.S. monetary policy shocks and quantify the impact of identified shocks on investor reactions. The dependent variable in the regression model is net stock purchase, while the explanatory variables are U.S. monetary policy shocks. The model is estimated for the period 2000-2019, including 156 FOMC meetings. Findings - Foreign investors immediately sell stocks in response to contractionary U.S. monetary shocks. They do not, however, react to anticipated changes in monetary policy rates, confirming the rationality of foreign investors. Individual investors demonstrate the opposite response, indicating that a non-trivial proportion of individual investors are irrational. Research implications or Originality - This study adds to the current literature on the effect of U.S. monetary policy on the Korean stock market. This study demonstrates a heterogeneous response to U.S. monetary policy shocks, validating the rational investment behavior of foreign investors, while individual investors exhibit a certain degree of irrationality. Methodologically, this study adds to the literature by quantifying the impact of U.S. monetary policy employing a sharper identification method allowing a simple and consistent estimation.
This paper measures the extent of comovements in stock returns between Korea and three major countries (China, Japan and the U.S.) using industry-level data for Korea from 2003 to 2016 in the spirit of the international capital asset pricing model. It also examines what drives the comovements between Korea and the three countries. We find that the comovements of Korean stock returns with those of the U.S. and Japan became smaller after the global financial crisis. In contrast, the comovement in stock returns between Korea and China became larger after the crisis. After an additional analysis, we conclude that trade linkage is the main driver of the comovements between Korea and the three countries.
This study examined the market efficiency of korea stock market by comparing variance ratios(VR) of stock groups which is sorted by market capitalization. We compute variance ratios of KOSPI large capitalization, midium capitalization, and small capitalization for 546 trading days from 2006/01/02 to 2008/04/15. For our study, we also use high frequency data that is; intra-day 1 minute data. The characteristics of variance ratios of stock groups by market capitalization as follows: From 1 to 5 minute interval, variance ratios of three stock group increase far from zero(0). The longer time interval, the more variance ratios decrease, but only large capitalization converge on around zero. This means that the market of large capitalization is more efficient compare to other stock groups. The entire sample period can be divided two sub-period because the impact of sub prime crisis arised from U.S.A. influences Korea stock market. Before sub prime crisis, the VRs of mid cap and small cap do not converge on around zero except large cap although the time interval is longer. After sub prime crisis, the VRs of three stock groups decrease when time interval is longer, but only large cap converge on around zero. We conclude that large cap is more efficient than other stock groups in Korea Stock Market.
