  • The warrants to install traffic signals used in U.S.A. are well specified comparing to those in other countries. Among the eleven warrants of the U.S.A., the Warrant 9, 10, and 11 are especially fit in practice. The warrant relaxed to traffic volumes used presently in Korea have been adopted from the U.S.A. Those may not have been reliable in the traffic situation of Korea. The rules required passing through intersections are not kept well at intersections controlled without signals. The purposes of this study are to test and evaluate the reliability of the Warrant 9 and 11 adopted form U.S.A.n Korean traffic situation and to propose new traffic signal warrants related to traffic volumes fitted in here. The traffic volume warrants are proposed considering the situation of rules not being kept well(current situation) and that of vice versa(ideal situation). The results of this study are following; 1) The total volumes warranted to traffic signals are 1600vph, 1700vph, and 1800vph at 4-legs intersection having 1 by 1 lane, 1 by 2 lanes, and 2 by 2 lanes respectively. The total volumes warranted are 1400vph and 1600vph at 3-legs intersection haying 1 by 2 1anes, and 2 by 2 lanes respectively. 2) Another traffic warrants proposed are transformed from the currant warrants 9 and 11. These warrants are composed of the total volumes and the ratio of the volume of the minor street to that of the major street.

  • It is crucial in traffic flow management to maintain productivity and the traffic stability at the same time especially under congested traffic conditions. This issue has not been explicitly addressed under the intelligent transportation system environments. However, the ubiquitous transportation system environments make it possible to collect the data for each vehicle's position and velocity and to perform more sophisticated traffic flow management at individual vehicle or platoon level through V2V and V2I communications. In this paper, a preventive traffic flow management scheme is proposed, in which the objective is to maintain traffic flow stability while the productivity of the system is not decreased. The management scheme is proposed based on Greenshield's model because it is simple and easy to handle. It is considered that further research should be performed to evaluate the various traffic flow models.

  • The ubiquitous transportation system environments make it possible to collect each vehicle's position and velocity data and to perform more sophisticated traffic flow management at individual vehicle or platoon level through V2V and V2I communication. It is necessary to develop a new data processing methodology to take advantage of the ubiquitous transportation system environments. This paper proposed to build 3-dimension data profiles to maintain the detailed traffic flow information contained in the individual vehicles' data and at the same time to keep the profiles from the meaningless fluctuations. Also methods to build the platoon profile and the shock wave speed profile are proposed, which have not been possible under ITS(Intelligent Transportation System) environments.

  • Today travel demand continues to increase with spread of economic zones. Also, urban freeway plays an important role in intra-zone transportations as a major corridor in a big city. However, most of urban freeways experience a severe congestion with the excess of inflowing or outflowing traffic through freeway ramps. The purpose of this study is to identify the traffic characteristics, analyze the relationships between the traffic characteristics and finally construct the speed predictive models on the ramp junctions of urban freeway under the intelligent transportation system(ITS) settings. From the analyses of traffic characteristics following results were obtained: ⅰ) 24 hours average traffic characteristics flow, occupancy, speed under the ITS settings showed about 40%, 38%, 8.8% increase each on urban freeway junctions period when compared with that under the non-ITS settings each other. Free flow speed and traffic flow on the mainline sections of urban freeway under the ITS settings also showed about 20% and 17% increase when compared with that under the non-ITS, respectively. ⅱ) The upstream when compared speed( $S_{u}$)and downstream occupancy( $O_{d}$) were especially shown to have higher explanatory powers on the stable flow ramp junctions, but the upstream speed( $S_{u}$) and downstream flow( $V_{d}$) were especially shown on the unstable flow ramp junctions of urban freeway under the ITS settings.ngs.ngs.

  • A recent major development in computer technology is the advent of the wearable computer system that is based on human-centric interface technology trends and ubiquitous computing environments. Wearable computer systems can use the wireless universal serial bus (WUSB) that refers to USB technology that is merged with WiMedia PHY/MAC technical specifications. In this paper, we focus on an integrated system of the wireless USB over the IEEE 802.15.6 wireless body area networks (WBAN) for wireless wearable computer systems supporting U-health services. And a communication structure that can differentiate QoS of U-health WBAN and WUSB traffic with different priorities is proposed for WUSB over IEEE 802.15.6 hierarchical protocol. In our proposal and performance evaluation, throughputs of U-health WBAN and WUSB traffic are analyzed under single and multiple QoS classes to evaluate the effectiveness of proposed QoS differentiating structure in WUSB over IEEE 802.15.6.

  • According to the local highway tunnel ventilation guideline, ventilation capacity calculation should be performed at the speed ranging from 10 km/h to 80 km/h. This is so reasonable method considering uncongested and congested traffic conditions in urban tunnels. But recently due to low traffic volume and very low congestion frequency in rural highway tunnels, it seems to be an inadequate way to apply the guideline. Therefore the calculation should be performed separately for the free flow and congested traffic cases classified by the appropriate decision model. This paper aims at determining unnecessary running speed range for reasonable tunnel ventilation design, considering free flow and congested traffic conditions. Firstly, traffic volumes in highway tunnels were collected and if any, the causes of congestion were investigated. And with concept of 'margin speed'($u-u_m$), the decision model on traffic congestion was developed. Applicability of the decision model was also analyzed with case study. According to the results, when design speed is 100 km/h, with V/C less than 0.1, then the range of unnecessary speed in tunnel ventilation design is less than 40 km/h; for $V/C{\leqq}0.35$, $V/C{\leqq}0.6$ and $V/C{\leqq}0.75$, the unnecessary speed ranges are found to be ${\leqq}30$, ${\leqq}20$ and ${\leqq}10km/h$, respectively.
