  • This paper considers eigenstructure assignment in high-order linear systems via proportional plus derivative feedback. It is shown that the problem is closely related with a type of so-called high-order Sylvester matrix equations. Through establishing two general parametric solutions to this type of matrix equations, two complete parametric methods for the proposed eigenstructure assignment problem are presented. Both methods give simple complete parametric expressions for the feedback gains and the closed-loop eigenvector matrices. The first one mainly depends on a series of singular value decompositions, and is thus numerically very simple and reliable; the second one utilizes the right factorization of the system, and allows the closed-loop eigenvalues to be set undetermined and sought via certain optimization procedures. An example shows the effect of the proposed approaches.

  • A subset S of vertices of a graph G is independent if no two vertices of S are adjacent by an edge in G. Also we say that S is maximal independent if it is contained In no larger independent set in G. A planted plane tree is a tree that is embedded in the plane and rooted at an end-vertex. A (k+1) -valent tree is a planted plane tree in which each vertex has degree one or (k+1). We classify maximal independent sets of (k+1) -valent trees into two groups, namely, type A and type B maximal independent sets and consider specific independent sets of these trees. We study relations among these three types of independent sets. Using the relations, we count the number of all maximal independent sets of (k+1) -valent trees with n vertices of degree (k+1).

  • This paper deals with the Cauchy problem for heat equations with coupling moving reactions of mixed type. After obtaining the infinite Fujita blow-up exponent, we classify optimally the simultaneous and non-simultaneous blow-up for two components of the solutions. Moreover, blow-up rates and set are determined. By using the analogous procedures, one can fill in the gaps for the other two systems, which are studied in the paper 'Australian and New Zealand Industrial and Applied Mathematics Journal' 48(2006)37-56.

  • Exposed-type steel column bases are used widely in low-rise building construction. Numerous researchers have examined methods to identify their stiffness and strength, but those studies have heretofore been restricted to in-plane behaviors. This paper presents an experimental investigation of inelastic behaviors of square hollow section (SHS) steel column bases under biaxial bending. Two types of failure modes are considered : anchor bolt yielding and base plate yielding. Different pinching effects and interaction surfaces for biaxial bending are observed for these two modes during bi-directional quasi-static cyclic loading tests. Differences are elucidated using limit analyses based on a simple analytical model.

  • In this paper we give two matching theorems of Ky Fan type concerning open or closed coverings of nonempty convex sets in a topological vector space. One of them will permit us to put in evidence, when X and Y are convex sets in topological vector spaces, a new subclass of KKM(X, Y) different by any admissible class $\mathfrak{u}_c$(X, Y). For this class of set-valued mappings we establish a KKM-type theorem which will be then used for obtaining existence theorems for the solutions of two types of simultaneous relation problems.

  • A rectangular type circulating fluidized bed (CFB) with an internal nozzle and two partition walls was proposed. In this modified CFB, an internal nozzle and two slanted partition walls were additionally set in the riser. This cold mode apparatus was made of acrylic resin; the riser was 1500mm high and $1000{\times}1000mm^2$ in the cross sectional area, the internal nozzle was 200mm high and 10mm in the inner diameter, and the partition wall was 7mm thick. Glass beads of $91{\mu}m$ in the mean diameter were employed as bed materials. In the cold mode by using the proposed CFB with an internal nozzle, it was possible to change the particle hold up by changing the gas flow ratio of the nozzle to the total(Qn/Qt). It was found that the inflection point which devided the bed structure between the dense and the dilute phase in the riser varied with Qn/Qt.

  • In this study, a new methodology in predicting a system output has been investigated by applying a data mining technique and a hybrid type II fuzzy system in CNC turning operations. The purpose was to generate a supplemental control function under the dynamic machining environment, where unforeseeable changes may occur frequently. Two different types of membership functions were developed for the fuzzy logic systems and also by combining the two types, a hybrid system was generated. Genetic algorithm was used for fuzzy adaptation in the control system. Fuzzy rules are automatically modified in the process of genetic algorithm training. The computational results showed that the hybrid system with a genetic adaptation generated a far better accuracy. The hybrid fuzzy system with genetic algorithm training demonstrated more effective prediction capability and a strong potential for the implementation into existing control functions.

  • The bond characteristics of GFRP(glass fiber reinforced polymer) rods with various surface deformation produced by RTM(resin transfer molding) process were analyzes experimentally. Two types of GFRP rods with different surface deformation manufactured by RTM process in domestic area and two types of GFRP rebars imported were considered in this study. All testing procedures including specimens preparation, set-up of test equipments and measuring devices were made according to the CSA S806-02 recommendations. From the test results, it was found that deformed-type GFRP rod manufactured by RTM process showed the highest bond strength among test specimen. But, wave-type GFRP rod made by RTM process show the lowest value due to the splitting failure of concrete caused by the wedge action of waved surfaces on GFRP rods.

  • In this paper we evaluate the Korean e-government portal and linked web sites, based on usability. We pick a set of 18 representative government sites, and consider two approaches of type-I and type-II testing with different questionnaires. We ask users two questions at each site, regarding simple facts. We count a task as successful if the user find the right answer for fact questions. In type-I testing, after users have finished working with a site, we give them a post-test questionnaire asking them to rate the site in 16 different areas, in order to calculate the site rating. In type-II testing, we investigate page design, contents design, and site design of the web sites.

  • A comparative study was performed on strain-compensated Arrhenius-type constitutive models established with two regression methods: polynomial regression and regression Kriging. For measurements at high temperatures, experimental data of 70Cr3Mo steel were adopted from previous research. An Arrhenius-type constitutive model necessitates strain compensation for material constants to account for strain effect. To associate the material constants with strain, we first evaluated them at a set of discrete strains, then capitalized on surrogate modeling to represent the material constants as a function of strain. As a result, disparate flow stress models were formed via the two different regression methods. The constructed constitutive models were examined systematically against measured flow stresses by validation methods. The predicted material constants were found to be quite accurate compared to the actual material constants. However, notable mismatches between measured and predicted flow stresses were revealed by the proposed validation techniques, which carry out validation with not the entire, but a single tensile test case.
