  • The novel microsphere blending and multiple emulsion method by single process was tried to prepare sustained release microspheres which release a physiologically active substance for long periods of time. A drug was separately dissolved in each of two or more oils containing biodegradable polymers to give the primary oil phases. The primary oil phases were dispersed in single aqueous phase in succession. From the drug-dispersed solution, the organic solvent was removed to produce microspheres. The accelerated drug release from the microsphere formulation prepared by single process through the multiple emulsion method was very similar to a physical blending of separately prepared microspheres using the same polymers. But long term release was not same. In this study, leuprorelin acetate loaded poly(lactide-co-glycolide) microsphere formulation for one-month delivery was developed by the multi-emulsion method followed by solvent extraction/evaporation method.

  • In this paper we mose a new scheme for recognition of deformed letters by extracting feature vectors based on Gibbs distributions which are well suited for representing the spatial continuity. The extracted feature vectors are comprised of 2-D conditional moments which are invariant under translation, rotation, and scale of an image. The Algorithm for pattern recognition of deformed letters contains two parts: the extraction of feature vector and the recognition process. (i) We extract feature vector which consists of an improved 2-D conditional moments on the basis of estimated conditional Gibbs distribution for an image. (ii) In the recognition phase, the minimization of the discrimination cost function for a deformed letters determines the corresponding template pattern. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, recognition experiments with a generated document was conducted. on Workstation. Experiment results reveal that the proposed scheme has high recognition rate over 96%.

  • We propose a new algorithm for pattern classification by extracting feature vectors based on Gibbs distributions which are well suited for representing the characteristic of an images. The extracted feature vectors are comprised of 2-D moments which are invariant under translation rotation, and scale of the image less sensitive to noise. This implementation contains two puts: feature extraction and pattern classification First of all, we extract feature vector which consists of an improved 2-D moments on the basis of estimated Gibbs distribution Next, in the classification phase the minimization of the discrimination cost function for a specific pattern determines the corresponding template pattern. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, classification experiments with training document sets of characters have been carried out on SUN ULTRA 10 Workstation Experiment results reveal that the proposed scheme had high classification rate over 98%.

  • We investigated the antagonism of indigenous bacteria isolated from stressed mussels and their extracellular metabolites on the adult zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha. Selective bacterial isolates including Aeromonas media, A. salmonicida, A. veronii, and Shewanella putrefaciens, showed strong lethality against adult mussels and 100% mortality was observed within 5 days of incubation. Bacterial metabolites, fractionated and concentrated from stationary-phase culture supernatants of these bacterial isolates, displayed varying degrees of antagonistic effects on zebra mussels. Among the three size fractions examined, <5, 5-10, and >10 kDa, the mast lethal fraction seems to be >10 kDa for three of the four isolates tested. Further chemical analyses of these size fractions revealed that the predominant constituents were polysaccharides and proteins. No 2-keto-3-deoxyoctanoic acid (2-KDO), deoxyribonucleic acids (DNA) or uranic acid were detectable. Extraction of supernatants of two antagonistic isolates with polar solvent suggested that polar molecules are present in the active fraction. Our data suggest that extracellular metabolites produced by antagonistic bacteria are also involved in disease development in zebra mussels and elucidation of the mechanisms involved may offer a novel strategy for control of biofouling invertebrates.

  • This paper describes ECG signal labeling based on Fuzzy clustering, which is necessary at automated ECG diagnosis. The NPPA(Non parametric partitioning algorithm) compares the correlations of wave forms, which tends to recognize the same wave forms as different when the wave forms have a little morphological variation. We propose to apply Fuzzy clustering to ECG QRS Complex labeling, which prevents the errors to mistake by using If-then comparision. The process is divided into two parts. The first part is a parameters extraction process from ECG signal, which is composed of filtering, QRS detection by mapping to a phase space by time delay coordinates and generation of characteristic vectors. The second is fuzzy clustering by FCM(Fuzzy c-means), which is composed of a clustering, an assessment of cluster validity and labeling.

  • Feedwater heaters of many nuclear power plants have recently experienced severe wall thinning damage, which will increase as operating time progresses. Several nuclear power plants in Korea have experienced wall thinning damage in the area around the impingement baffle inside feedwater heater installed downstream of the turbine extraction stream line. At that point, the extract steam from the turbine is two phase fluid at high temperature, high pressure, and high speed. Since it flows to reverse direction after impinging the impingement baffle, the shell wall of feedwater heaters may be affected by flow-accelerated corrosion. In this paper, to compare degree of shell wall thinning mitigation rate to squared type with mitigation rate of other type baffle plate, three different types of impingement baffle plate-squared, curved and mitigating type-applied inside the shell. With these comparison data, this paper describes operation of experiments and numerical analysis which is composed similar condition with real feed water heater. And flow visualization is operated for verification of experiments and numerical analysis. In conclusion, this study shows that mitigating type baffle plate is more effective than other baffle plate about prevention of pressure concentration and pressure value decrease.

  • The alkylphenols, chlorophenols, and bisphenol A were determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry-selected ion monitoring (GC/MS-SIM) followed by two work-up methods for comparison: isobutoxycarbonyl (isoBOC) derivatization and tert-butyldimethylsilyl (TBDMS) derivatization. Eleven endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) of phenols in biological samples were extracted with acetonitrile and then the acetonitrile layer underwent freezing filtration 6$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) was used with XAD-4 and subsequent conversion to isoBOC or TBDMS derivatives for sensitivity analysis with the GC/MS-SIM mode. For isoBOC derivatization and TBDMS derivatization the recoveries were 92.3∼150.6% and 93.8∼108.3%, the method detection limits (MDLs) of bisphenol A for SIM were 0.062 $\mu$ g/kg and 0.010 $\mu$ g/kg, and the SIM responses were linear with the correlation coefficient varying by 0.9755∼0.9981 and 0.9908∼0.9996, respectively. When these methods were applied to mackerel samples, the concentrations of the 11 phenol EDCs were below the MDL.

  • This study assessed in vitro antioxidant activity (ABTS+ and DPPH) of Vitex rotundifolia seeds collected from two different regions in Korea (Jungjang City and Sindu City). Three extraction methods using ethanol, methanol, and water were prepared separately and subjected to quantification by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array (HPLC-PDA) analysis as well as antioxidant testing. Among them, the water-based extract exhibited superior activity in the ABTS+ compared with the ethanol- and methanol-based extracts, while the DPPH assay analysis, revealed that the methanol-based extract had very low antioxidant activity. The concentrations of vanillic acid (1), luteolin (2), vitexicarpin (3), and artemetin (4) were quantified using HPLC-PDA analysis. Vanillic acid (1) was identified as the main antioxidant in V. rotundifolia seeds. Combining the antioxidant activity and quantitative analysis results, the water-based extract was considered to have the highest antioxidant activity. Furthermore, vanillic acid (1) was detected in the leaves and stems of V. rotundifolia plants from different regions, indicating that this species has the potential for use in future antioxidant-applications.
