  • Passive polarization mode splitters at λ= 1.55 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were designed and fabricated based on Ti:x-cut LiNbO$_3$ single-mode optical waveguide and two-mode interference theory. The splitting ratio with waveguide width 8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, branching angle 0.55$^{\circ}$ and interfering length 470 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ showed 16.18 dB, 21.25 dB for TE and TM input polarization modes, respectively. Polarization cross-talk of -16.28 dB and -21.28 dB for TE and TM modes was achieved. Total insertion losses of 2.24 dB/cm (TE) and 2.41 dB/cm (TM) were also measured. The devices operated nearly wavelength independently over a range or 30 nm.

  • We achieved 95% visibility in the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference experiment while we achieved only 56% visibility in a previous report. We used a 120 mW 405 nm single-mode continuous wave laser, a 5-mm-thick type-1 ${\beta}$-barium borate single crystal, standard Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer optics, two avalanche photodiode single-photon counters, and a homemade coincidence counting unit. The photon collection unit was the key difference between the present study and the previous study. In the present experiment, we used single-mode optical fibers for photon collection, which suppressed accidental coincidence between-different mode photons by acting as a spatial filter because of its core size being much smaller than a multi-mode fiber.

  • A 1 4 polymeric optical power divider based on the multimode interference effect is designed and fabricated. The two dimensional finite difference beam propagation method has been utilized in designing the device. Polymers used for the core layer and the cladding layer are Cyclotene-3022 and UV-15, respectively. The device is fabricated by the reactive ion etching method. The splitting ratio of the fabricated device is 0.93 : 1.00 : 0.93 : 0.90 for TE mode and 0.84 : 0.94 : 1.00 : 0.83 for TM mode. The advantages of this device are small size and low polarization-dependence.

  • Simple principles of self-imaging in Multi-Mode Interference (MMI) devices are based on the approximation of propagation constants. The analysis of the basic nature of the self-imaging principle reveals the problems of previous optimization methods, and provides a new scheme to optimize the external variables for the reconciliation of approximation problems by considering two different tendencies of approximation effects. Furthermore, the representative mode method is proposed to make the application easy. This optimization method provides an essential method for stable design and fabrication of MMI devices with improved characteristics.

  • Common-mode noise (CMN) is an unresolved problem in wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) systems. In a WCE system, CMN originates from various electric currents found within the human body or external interference sources and causes critical demodulation performance degradation. The differential operation, a typical method for the removal of CMN rejection, can remove CMN by subtracting two signals simultaneously received by two reception sensors attached to a human body. However, when there is impedance mismatching between the two reception sensors, the differential operation method cannot completely remove CMN. Therefore, to overcome this problem, we propose an enhanced CMN rejection method. The proposed method performs not only subtraction but also addition between two received signals. Then a CMN ratio can be estimated by sufficient accumulation of division operation outcomes between the subtraction and addition outputs during the guard period. Finally, we can reject the residual CMN by combining the subtraction and addition outputs.

  • Evaluating the impurity concentrations in semiconductor thin films using time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is an effective technique. The mass interference between isotopes and matrix element in data interpretation makes the process complex. In this study, we have investigated the doping concentration of phosphorus in, phosphorus doped silicon thin film on glass using ToF-SIMS in the dynamic mode of operation. To overcome the mass interference between phosphorus and silicon isotopes, the quantitative analysis of counts to concentration conversion was done following two routes, standard relative sensitivity factor (RSF) and SIMetric software estimation. Phosphorus doped silicon thin film of 180 nm was grown on glass substrate using hot wire chemical vapor deposition technique for possible applications in optoelectronic devices. Using ToF-SIMS, the phosphorus-31 isotopes were detected in the range of 101~104 counts. The silicon isotopes matrix element was measured from p-type silicon wafer from a separate measurement to avoid mass interference. For the both procedures, the phosphorus concentration versus depth profiles were plotted which agree with a percent difference of about 3% at 100 nm depth. The concentration of phosphorus in silicon was determined in the range of 1019~1021 atoms/cm3. The technique will be useful for estimating distributions of various dopants in the silicon thin film grown on glass using ToF-SIMS overcoming the mass interference between isotopes.

  • The wavelength demultiplexer is an essential component in optical transmission systems using wavelength-division multiplexing(WDM), which can increase the number of channels and information capacity of optical fibers. For optical telecommunication, much attention has been given to demultiplexing two wavelengths in the 1.3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of low dispersion band and 1.55${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of low loss window. Various integrated-optical devices have been proposed to perform this function, including conventional directional couplers, asymmetric Y-branching devices, asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometers and two-mode interference devices. • Since plug type passenger door has two motion modes, power transmission unit must be capable of plug-in or plug-out, and sliding mode. Complex planetary gear train is proposed, which is composed of two 2K-H, I type planetary gear units. For the proposed complex planetary gear train, ranges of addendum modification coefficients which would not lead to interferences is analyzed, and optimal addendum modification coefficients among these ranges which generate the maximum efficiency are presented. Based on the interference, efficiency and torque ratio analysis results, complex planetary new train is designed and manufactured.

  • The volumetric interferometer, which uses the interference of wavefronts emitted from two single mode fibers, measures the target position in 3-D. In this paper, we suggest a new calculation method which doesn't need a non-linear optimization and an initial guess. We find the relationship between the coefficients of the Zernike polynomials for a spherical wavefront and its center and reconstruct a spherical wavefront by using the Zernike polynomials from two interference fringes like a lateral shearing interferometer. The target position can be obtained from the coefficients of the Zernike polynomials of the reconstructed wavefront. We can get the target position in 3-D with $sub-{\mu}m$ errors in a simulation.

  • This paper presents a pulse-width modulation strategy to eliminate the common mode voltage (CMV) with reduced CMV spikes in multilevel inverters since a high CMV magnitude and its fast variations dv/dt result in bearing failure of motors, overvoltage at motor terminals, and electromagnetic interference (EMI). The proposed method only utilizes the zero CMV states in a space vector diagram and it is implemented by a carrier-based pulse-width modulation (CBPWM) method. This method is generalized for odd number levels of inverters including neutral-point-clamped (NPC) and cascaded H-bridge inverters. Then it is extended to the over-modulation mode. The over-modulation mode is implemented by using the two-limit trajectory principle to maintain linear control and to avoid look-up tables. Even though the CMV is eliminated, CMV spikes that can cause EMI and bearing current problems still exist due to the deadtime effect. As a result, the deadtime effect is analyzed. By taking the deadtime effect into consideration, the proposed method is capable of reducing CMV spikes. Simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.
