The basic principles in the design of Class II amalgam cavity preparations have been modified but not changed in essence over the last 90 years. The early essential principle was "extension for prevention". Most of the modifications have served to reduce the extent of preparation and, thus, increase the conservation of sound tooth structure. A more recent concept relating to conservative Class II cavity preparations involves elimination of occlusal preparation if no carious lesion exists in this area. To evaluate the ideal ClassII cavity preparation design, if carious lesion exists only in the interproximal area, three cavity design conditions were studied: Rodda's conventional cavity, simple proximal box cavity and proximal box cavity with retention grooves. In this study, MO amalgam cavity was prepared on maxillary first premolar. Three dimensional finite element models were made by serial photographic method. Linear, eight and six-nodal, isoparametric brick elements were used for the three dimensional finite element model. The periodontal ligament and alveolar bone surrounding the tooth were excluded in these models. Three types model(B option, Gap option and R option model) were developed. B option model was assumed perfect bonding between the restoration and cavty wall. Gap option model(Gap distance: $2{\mu}m$) was assumed the possibility of play at the interface simulated the lack of real bonding between the amalgam and cavity wall (enamel and dentin). R option model was assumed non-connection between the restoration and cavty wall. A load of 500N was applied vertically at the first node from the lingual slope of the buccal cusp tip. This study analysed the displacement, 1 and 2 direction normal stress and strain with FEM software ABAQUS Version 5.2 and hardware IRIS 4D/310 VGX Work-station. The results were as followed. 1. Rodda's cavity form model showed greater amount of displacement with other two models. 2. The stress and strain were increased on the distal marginal ridge and buccopulpal line angle in Rodda's cavity form model. 3. The stress and strain were increased on the central groove and a part of distal marginal ridge in simple proximal box model and proximal box model with retention grooves. 4. With Gap option, Rodda's cavity form model showed the greatest amount of the stress on distal marginal ridge followed by proximal box model with retention grooves and simple proximal box model in descending order. 5. With Gap option, simple proximal box model showed greater amount of stress on the central groove with proximal box model with retention grooves. 6. Retention grooves in the proximal box played the role of supporting the restorations opposing to loads.

We have developed a two-dimensional (2-D) magnetotelluric (MT) inversion algorithm, which can include topographic effects in inversion. We use the finite element method (FEM) to incorporate topography into forward calculation. Topography is implemented simply by moving nodes of rectangular elements in z-direction according to the elevation of air-earth interface. In the inversion process, we adopt a spatially variable Lagrangian multiplier algorithm in the smoothness-constrained least-squares inversion. The inversion algorithm developed in this study reconstructs subsurface resistivity structure quite well when topography variation exists. Also, it turns out to be effective in both resolution and stability from a model study and field data application.
This paper deals with the analysis on eddy current looses of high speed permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for turbo compressor according to voltage source driving. This paper presents analytical procedures for calculation of the eddy current losses using Poynting theorem. On the basis of the magnetic vector potential and a two-dimensional (2-D) cylindrical coordinate system, this paper derived analytical solutions of the eddy current looses using phase current analysis. The eddy current losses of each harmonic obtained by fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis of phase current are with results obtained from finite-element method (FEM).

Dynamic response of ground due to train loads is analyzed. A numerical procedure based on finite element method is used to solve two-dimensional ground response. Dynamic train loads assumed in analysis is the point acceleration on train rail with magnitude of 2330 gal and thickness of surface of soil layer assumed is 60cm. In order to consider the effect of acceleration point, dynamic responses such as response acceleration and displacement are computed as a function of distance from acceleration point on rail. In addition, simple methods which reduce dynamic effects on ground are also proposed.
This paper presents a comparative study of a Tubular Linear Machine (TLM) with an Axially Magnetized Single-sided Permanent Magnet (AMSPM) and an Axially Magnetized Double-sided Permanent Magnet (AMDPM) based on analytical field calculations. Using a two-dimensional (2-D) polar coordinate system and a magnetic vector potential, analytical solutions for the flux density produced by the stator windings are derived. This technique is significant for the design and control implementation of electromagnetic machines. The field solution is obtained by solving Maxwell's equations in the simplified boundary value problem consisting of the air gap and coil. These analytical solutions are then used to estimate the self and mutual inductances. Two different types of machine are used to verify the validity of these model simplifications, and the analytical results are compared to results obtained using the finite element method (FEM) and experimental measurement.

Along with the development of power electronics and magnetic materials, permanent magnet (PM) brushless direct current (BLDC) motors are now widely used in many fields of modern industry BLDC motors have many advantages such as high efficiency, large peak torque, easy control of speed, and reliable working characteristics. However, Compared with the other electric motors without a PM, BLDC motors with a PM have inherent cogging torque. It is often a principle source of vibration, noise and difficulty of control in BLDC motors. Cogging torque which is produced by the interaction of the rotor magnetic flux and angular variation in the stator magnetic reluctance can be reduced by sinusoidal air-gap flux density waveform due to reduction of variation of magnetic reluctance. Therefore, this paper will present a design method of magnetizing system for reduction of cogging torque and low manufacturing cost of BLDC motor with isotropic bonded neodynium-iron-boron (Nd-Fe-B) magnets in ring type by sinusoidal air-gap flux density distribution. An analytical technique of magnetization makes use of two-dimensional finite element method (2-D FEM) and Preisach model that expresses the hysteresis phenomenon of magnetic materials in order for accurate calculation. In addition, For optimum design of magnetizing fixture, Factorial design which is one of the design of experiments (DOE) is used.
Steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) are one of the most important and widely used lateral load-bearing systems. The reason for this is easier execution than reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls, faster construction time, and lower final weight of the structure. However, the main drawback of SPSWs is premature buckling in low drift ratios, which affects the energy absorption capacity and global performance of the system. To address this problem, two groups of SPSWs under cyclic loading were investigated using the finite element method (FEM). In the first group, several series of circular rings have been used and in the second group, a new type of SPSW with concentric circular rings (CCRs) has been introduced. Numerous parameters include in yield stress of steel plate wall materials, steel panel thickness, and ring width were considered in nonlinear static analysis. At first, a three-dimensional (3D) numerical model was validated using three sets of laboratory SPSWs and the difference in results between numerical models and experimental specimens was less than 5% in all cases. The results of numerical models revealed that the full SPSW undergoes shear buckling at a drift ratio of 0.2% and its hysteresis behavior has a pinching in the middle part of load-drift ratio curve. Whereas, in the two categories of proposed SPSWs, the hysteresis behavior is complete and stable, and in most cases no capacity degradation of up to 6% drift ratio has been observed. Also, in most numerical models, the tangential stiffness remains almost constant in each cycle. Finally, for the innovative SPSW, a relationship was suggested to determine the shear capacity of the proposed steel wall relative to the wall slenderness coefficient.

This paper are reported a methodology and application for extracting parasitic capacitances in a multi-level interconnect semiconductor structure by a numerical technique. To calculate the parasitic capacitances between the interconnect lines, we employed finite element method (FEM) and calculated the distrubution of electric potential in the inter-metal layer dielecric(ILD) by solving the Laplace equation. The three-dimensional multi-level interconnect structure is generated directly from two-dimensional mask layout data by specifying process sequences and dimension. An exemplary structure comprising two metal lines with a dimension of 8.0$\times$8.0$\times$5.0$\mu\textrm{m}^3/TEX>, which is embedded in three dielectric layer, was simulated to extract the parasitic capacitances. In this calculation, 1960 nodes with 8892 tetrahedra were used in ULTRA SPARC 1 workstation. The total CPU time for the simulation was 28 seconds, while the memory size of 4.4MB was required.
This paper deals with the analysis on eddy current losses for cylindrical linear oscillatory actuator (LOA) with Halbach array mover according to voltage waveform. This paper presents analytical procedures for calculation of eddy current losses using Poynting theorem. On the basis of the magnetic vector potential and a two-dimensional (2-d) cylindrical coordinate system, this paper derived analytical solutions of eddy current tosses using phase current analysis. The eddy current losses of each harmonic obtained by fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis of phase current are compared with results obtained from finite-element method (FEM). Particularly, this paper shows that the eddy current losses of cylindrical LOA according to square voltage waveform are more significant than those according to sinusoidal voltage waveform.

The nonlinearity and high deformability of rubber make accurate analysis of the behavior of cord-rubber composites a challenging task. Some researchers have adopted the third phase between cord and rubber and have carried out three-phase modeling. However, it is difficult to determine the thickness and properties of the interface in cord-rubber composites. In this study, a two-dimensional finite-element method (2D FEM) is used to investigate the effective and normalized moduli of cord-rubber composites having interfaces of various thicknesses; this model takes into account the 2D generalized plane strain and a plane strain element. The neo-Hookean model is used for the properties of rubber, several interface properties are assumed and three loading directions are selected. It is found that the properties and thickness of the interface can affect the nonlinearity and the effective modulus of cord-rubber composites.
