  • In this study, the hydraulic model experiments and numerical simulations are carried out to analyze the flood flow characteristics in and around a channel confluence connected asymmetrically with four channels. The numerical model applied in this study is ANSYS CFX (ver. 14) which is the commercial three-dimensional CFD model. As results of comparison between the measured and simulated water depth distributions in and around a channel confluence, the agreement is relatively well satisfied. It can be shown in this study that the water surface profiles in and around a channel confluence are significant different with the two channel directions in which the water are entering and increased inflow.

  • The effect of anode gas channel height on gas diffusion and cell performance in a 100 $cm^2$ class molten carbonate single cell is investigated. Single cell separators with three different channel height are used. The effect of the gas channel height on the distribution of the reactive gas concentration is evaluated by the two-dimensional concentration diffusion equation. The overpotential caused by concentration drop with different channel height is estimated by the voltage decay related to diffusion of reactants, well known as concentration polarization, using limiting current density. The estimation could have the possibility to identify the reactant mass transfer polarization in the complicate factors of the overall electrodes.

  • Flow characteristics occurring a side-weir overflow in rectangular channel is investigated in this study. A numerical model based on the two -dimensional shallow-water equations is employed to review the factors influencing on the side- weir overflow discharge and the change of flow depths and velocities. It is found that the discharge coefficient which has the most significant influence on the overflow is affected by geometric characteristics of a side-weir, Froude number of the main channel flow and the flow depth of the main channel at the starting point of a side-weir. And the discharge coefficient applicable to a practical design of a side-weir is proposed by deriving a relationship between Froude number of the main channel flow at the starting point of a side-weir and Froude number of the main channel flow.

  • A mechanism of hovering flight of small insects which is called the Weis-Fogh mechanism is applied to ship propulsion. A model of the propulsion mechanism is based on a two-dimensional model of the Weis-Fogh mechanism and consists of one or two wings in a square channel. A model ship equipped with this propulsion mechanism was made, and working tests were performed in a sea. The model ship sailed very smoothly and the moving speed of the wing was small compared with the advancing speed of the ship.

  • Using the multi-dimensional, multi-phase, nonisothermal Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell (PEFC) model presented in Part I, the effects of land/channel flow-field on temperature and liquid saturation distributions inside PEFCs are investigated in Part II. The focus is placed on exploring the coupled water transport and heat transfer phenomena within the nonisothermal and two-phase zone existing in the diffusion media (DM) of PEFCs. Numerical simulations are performed varying the land and channel widths and simulation results reveal that the water profile and temperature rise inside PEFCs are considerably altered by changing the land and channel widths, which indicates that oxygen supply and heat removal from the channel to the land regions and liquid water removal from the land toward the gas channels are key factors in determining the water and temperature distributions inside PEFCs. In addition, the adverse liquid saturation gradient along the thru-plane direction is predicted near the land regions by the numerical model, which is due to the vapor-phase diffusion driven by the temperature gradient in the nonisothermal two-phase DM where water evaporates at the hotter catalyst layer, diffuses as a vapor form and then condenses on the cooler land region. Therefore, the vapor phase diffusion exacerbates DM flooding near the land region, while it alleviates DM flooding near the gas channel.

  • In this paper, we propose and analyze two adaptive channel allocation schemes for supporting multimedia traffics in hierarchical cellular systems. It is guaranteed to satisfy the required quality of service of multimedia traffics according to their characteristics such as a mobile velocity for voice calls and a delay tolerance for multimedia calls. In the scheme 1, only slow-speed voice calls are allowed to overflow from macrocell to microcell and only adaptive multimedia calls can overflow from microcell to macrocell after reducing its bandwidth to the minimum channel bandwidth. In the scheme II, in addition to the first scheme, non-adaptive multimedia calls can occupy the required channel bandwidth through reducing the channel bandwidth of adaptive multimedia calls. The proposed scheme I is analyzed using 2-dimensional Markov model. Through computer simulations, the analysis model and the proposed schemes are compared with the fixed system and two previous studies. In the simulation result, it is shown that the proposed schemes yield a significant improvement in terms of the forced termination probability of handoff calls and the efficiency of channel usage.

  • The I/Q unbalance which is generated by non-ideal components such as a $90^{\circ}$ phase shifter and I/Q filters is an inevitable physical phenomenon and leads to performance degradation when we implement a coherent two-dimensional (2-D) modulation/demodulation system. This paper provides an exact and general expression for the SEP(symbol error probability) of DVB-S2 system with I/Q phase and amplitude unbalance over AWGN channel. Coordinate rotation and shift techniques used to redefine a received signal are key mathematical tools. In conclusion, the derived result is expressed as a linear combination of the 2-D Gaussian Q-functions.

  • The understanding and prediction of the behavior of flow in open channels are important to the solution of a wide variety of practical flow problems in water resources engineering. Recently, frequent drought has increased the necessity of an effective water resources control and management of river flows for reserving instream flow. The objective of this study is to develop an efficient and accurate finite element model based on Streamline Upwind/Petrov-Galerkin(SU/PG) scheme for analyzing and predicting two dimensional flow features in complex natural rivers. Several tests were performed in developed all elements(4-Node, 6-Node, 8-Node elements) for the purpose of validation and verification of the developed model. The U-shaped channel of flow and natural river of flow were performed for tests. The results were compared with these of laboratory experiments and RMA-2 model. Such results showed that solutions of high order elements were better accurate and improved than those of linear elements. Also, the suggested model displayed reasonable velocity distribution compare to RMA-2 model in meandering domain for application of natural river flow. Accordingly, the developed finite element model is feasible and produces reliable results for simulation of two dimensional natural river flow. Also, One contribution of this study is to present that results can lead to significant gain in analyzing the accurate flow behavior associated with hydraulic structure such as weir and water intake station and flow of chute and pool.

  • Two-dimensional finite element hydrodynamic models for long wave simulation usually adopt fixed land boundary. However moving boundary treatment is strongly required in the simulation of tidal flats for west and south coast of Korea. In this study very efficient and realistic moving boundary treatment is applied by considering incident long wave surface slope. Developed STEP-CM (Superior Two-step Explicit Program for Coastal Modeling) ,shows numerically stable results in comparative study for idealized one-dimensional channel. Real application of the model is done for Chonsu Bay where tidal flats are distributed along the coast. Nonlinear tidal current and tidal flat effects are easily simulated in STEP-CM and resulting circulations are detected around headland of Wonsan Island.

  • In this Paper, the resistance performances of twin hull forms, which are simplified as two-dimensional wedge shape, are experimentally investigated in low and middle speed ranges to find out the effect of distance between two hulls and fore-body shape for the future hull form development of catamaran type sweeping vessel. The model tests are performed for seven different cases for three models in the circulating water channel(CWC) of Inha Technical College. The free surface flows are observed together to investigate the relation between resistance performance and free surface characteristics. A conceptual design for the modification of bow hull form is presented and the efficiency is discussed.
