The iron core, which comprises the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using magnetic coupling of coils, can be operated in the saturation region, especially at the initial fault period. This operation of the iron core in the saturation region deteriorates the fault current limiting operation of the SFCL. To solve the saturation problem of the SFCL using magnetic coupling of coils, the iron core with two magnetic paths, which has an air-gap in one of them, was adopted. In this paper, the hysteresis characteristics of SFCL using magnetic coupling of coils, which were wound in the iron core with two magnetic paths, were analyzed. Through comparative analysis on the hysteresis characteristics of the iron core comprising SFCL, the hysteresis characteristics of the iron core with two magnetic paths were confirmed to be kept in the non-saturation region during the fault period and thus, the effective fault current limiting operation of the SFCL using the magnetic coupling of coils could be performed.
In this study, a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) having two magnetic paths was proposed, and its current limiting characteristics were analyzed. For the SFCL to effectively perform the current limiting operation, it must be designed considering the magnetic saturation of the E-I core. Further, the influence of the magnetic flux on its peak current limiting characteristics was investigated. In addition, the magnetic flux curves of the SFCL obtained from the fault current limiting experiments were analyzed, and the subtractive polarity winding case was observed to not only further reduce the saturation potential of the core but also perform the peak current limiting functions well when compared with the additive polarity winding case.
A new hybrid permanent magnet biased magnetic levitation actuator (maglev) is developed. This new maglev actuator is composed of two C-core electromagnetic cores separated with two permanent magnets. Compared to the conventional hybrid maglev actuators, the new actuator has unique flux paths such that bias flux paths are separated with control flux paths. The control flux paths have minimum reluctances only developed by air gaps, so the currents to produce control fluxes can be minimized. The gravity load can be compensated with the permanent magnet bias fluxes developed at off-centered air gap positions while external disturbances are controlled with control fluxes by currents. The consumed power to operate this levitation system can be minimized. 1-D magnetic circuit model is developed for this model such that the flux densities and magnetic forces are extensively analyzed. 3-D finite element model is also developed to analyze the performances of the maglev actuator.
We proposed a series connection-type superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) using E-I core that can prevent the internal magnetic flux generation of cores during normal operation, and prevent the saturation of cores due to a sudden magnetic flux generation at the initial stage of fault occurrence while limiting the peak current. Through a short-circuit simulation experiment, we analyzed the operating status of the two superconducting elements and limiting characteristics according to the size of the fault current peak before and after the failure. Further, the double peak current limiting characteristics according to the winding directions as well as the current and the voltage of each coil were compared and analyzed.
This paper presents the design and the control of three degree-of-freedom(DOF) fine positioning device based on an electro-magnetic force. The device is designed by use of a magnetic circuit theory and it is capable of fine motion due to the electro-magnetic force. The device consists of permanent magnets, yokes and coils. The magnetic fluxes generated from the permanent magnets constitute magnetic paths through steel, whereas the coils are arranged into the gap between two surfaces of the yokes. Therefore, by supplying current to the coils, the coils are capable of some motions due to Lorentz forces. For the optimal design of the actuating system, the system parameters are defined and investigated under the given constraints. From the system modeling in small displacement, three decoupled equations of motion are obtained. To get better performance of the system, a PID controller is implemented. Experimental results are presented in terms of time response and accuracy.
A magnet gear composed of two layers of permanent magnets repeated circumferentially can transmit the power without mechanical contact. In the topology called by the magnet shutter gear known as the most competitive concept among the existing concepts, the number of pole-pairs on the high speed rotor corresponds to that of low speed rotor through electric steel set functioning as a magnetic modulator. The methodology is classified into radial type and axial type according to its magnetic path as in the motor. However, the magnetic modulator has multiple poles located separately. So, it is very complicated to assemble each module of the magnet gear mechanically and to sustain a mechanical stiffness of the modulator. The practical trouble can be solved partially through reconfiguring the modules. This paper deals with the novel magnetic shutter gear topology varying the magnetic path and its effectiveness is verified through real hardware implementation.

When a partial discharge takes place at the stator of a generator, the electrical pulse will propagate along the stator bars and the capacitor chains formed by the end part of the stator winds. On the first path, the pulse propagates as a travel wave at slow speed. On the second path, the pulse propagates at quick speed. Based on the data of the experiments on a real 50 MW steam generator, the author has found the pulses can propagate by magnetic field of the stator winding. It was studied that how to locating the partial discharge by signals coming from the different paths, including the features of signals on the two paths at time domain and frequency domain, the measurement frequency rang of the signals, the blind area, the advantage and disadvantage of this method.

A novel kind of switched reluctance motor (SRM) with short flux path is proposed in this paper. Phase excitation in the SRM gives short flux paths, hence reducing the magnetomotive force required to drive the machine, resulting in significant reduction of copper wire and core losses compared to the typical SRM with diametric circulation of magnetic flux. To verify the performance, the characteristics analysis of a double-stator SRM, a 6/5 SRM with C-core structure, and a 4/5 two-phase SRM, which all have short flux paths, and a comparison with conventional SR motors are executed. The comparison demonstrates that the proposed motor offers some advantages in terms of torque and efficiency.
This paper suggests a non-contact sensor for measuring bending vibration of a non-metallic cylinder in two orthogonal directions simultaneously. Recent research shows that a solenoid can pick up bending vibrations of a nonmetallic cylinder based on the reversed Lorentz force mechanism if an electrical conductive patch is attached to the cylinder. In this work, pairs of specially designed patches are used to make two independent paths for the current induced by bending vibrations, which enables the measurement of bending vibrations along two orthogonal directions simultaneously. The working performance of the developed sensor was verified by using two accelerometers.
