  • A two stage ac drive configuration consisting of a single-phase line commutated rectifier and a three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) is very common in low and medium power applications. The deterministic pulse width modulation (PWM) methods like sinusoidal PWM (SPWM) could not be considered as an ideal choice for modern drives since they result mechanical vibration and acoustic noise, and limit the application scope. This is due to the incapability of the deterministic PWM strategies in sprawling the harmonic power. The random PWM (RPWM) approaches could solve this issue by creating continuous harmonic profile instead of discrete clusters of dominant harmonics. Insufficient filtering at dc link results in the amplitude distortion of the input dc voltage to the VSI and has the most significant impact on the spectral errors (difference between theoretical and practical spectra). It is obvious that the sprawling effect of RPWM undoubtedly influenced by input fluctuation and the discrete harmonic clusters may reappear. The influence of dc link fluctuation on harmonics and their spreading effect in the VSI remains invalidated. A case study is done with four different filter capacitor values in this paper and results are compared with the constant dc input operation. This paper also proposes an ingenious RPWM, a ripple dosed sinusoidal reference-random carrier PWM (RDSRRCPWM), which has the innate capacity of suppressing the effect of input fluctuation in the output than the other modern PWM methods. MATLAB based simulation study reveals the fundamental component, total harmonic distortion (THD) and harmonic spread factor (HSF) for various modulation indices. The non-ideal dc link is managed well with the developed RDSRRCPWM applied to the VSI and tested in a proto type VSI using the field programmable gate array (FPGA).

  • In recent year, energy harvesting technologies from the ambient environments such as light, motion, wireless waves, and temperature again a lot of attraction form research community [1-5] due to its efficient solution in order to substitute for conventional power delivery methods, especially in wearable together with on-body applications. The drawbacks of battery-powered characteristic used in commodity applications lead to self-powered, long-lifetime circuit design. Thermoelectric generator, a solid-state sensor, is useful compared to the harvesting devices in order to enable self-sustained low-power applications. TEG based on the Seebeck effect is utilized to transfer thermal energy which is available with a temperature gradient into useful electrical energy. Depending on the temperature difference between two sides, amount of output power will be proportionally delivered. In this work, we illustrated a low-input voltage energy harvesting circuit applied discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) method for getting an adequate amount of energy from thermoelectric generator (TEG) for a specific wearable application. With a small temperature gradient harvested from human skin, the input voltage from the transducer is as low as 60mV, the proposed circuit, fabricated in a $0.6{\mu}m$ CMOS process, is capable of generating a regulated output voltage of 4.2V with an output power reaching to $40{\mu}W$. The proposed circuit is useful for powering energy to battery-less systems, such as wearable application devices.

  • A novel class AB current subtracter(CS) and its application to Norton amplifier(NA) for low-power current-mode signal processing are designed. The CS is composed of a translinear cell, two current mirrors, and two common-emitter(CB) amplifiers. The principle of the current subtraction is that the difference of two input current applied translinear cell get from the current mirror, and then the current amplify through CB amplifier with ${\beta}$ times. The NA is consisted of the CS and wideband voltage buffer. The simulation results show that the CS has current input impedance of $20{\Omega}$, current gain of 50, and current input range of $i_{IN1}$ > $i_{IN2}{\geq}4I_B$. The NA has unit gain frequency of 312 MHz, transresistance of 130 dB, and power dissipation of 4mW at ${\pm}2.5V$ supply voltage.

  • The present experimental study was designed to address two issues. The first was to investigate whether oxidation voltage of titanium implants influenced bone tissue responses after an in vivo implantation. The second aim was to investigate secondary stability change after 1 to 3months period. Screw-shaped implants with a wide range of oxide properties were prepared by electrochemical oxidation methods, where the oxide thickness varied in the range of $3-15{\mu}m$. The micro structure revealed pore sizes of $1-3{\mu}m$, the crystal structures of the titanium oxide were amorphous, anatase and a mixture of anatase and rutile type. Bone tissue responses were evaluated by resonance frequency measurements that were undertaken 1 to 3months after insertion in the rabbit tibia. It was concluded that no statistical difference of RFA values was found between the groups, RFA gains after Imonth and 3months were calculated.

  • A Kerr cell was utilized as an optical shutter to generate a shortened pulse and as an isolator between amplifiers in an iodine laser system. By rotating the polarization of incident laser pulse only during the timing window of high voltage applied to the Kerr cell, shortened pulses of 5 ns and 1 ns, corresponding to the difference in propagation time of two coaxial cables, were obtained. It was also noticed that more than one timing window of Kerr cell was produced with a long incident laser pulse from the oscillator. The measured transmittance of Kerr cell with respect to applied voltage was compared with the theoretical estimation using the electro-optic Kerr effect theory. Through the amplification of the shortened pulse in iodine amplifiers. a pulse of 0.5 GW(2 J in 4 ns) was obtained. ained.

  • Referring to the calculation of the continuous permissible current rating in 22.9kV CN/CV underground distribution power cables, the current and temperature have been fully discussed and analyzed based on their three different values: one is the actually measured value throughout our test and the other two are calculated in connection with different specifications IEC-287 and JCS-168-D respectively. For this purpose, our test has been carried out with real cables which have been under stress either with induced current or with rating voltage. In the former, the calculated current of IEC-287 shows closer value to the measured one than that of JCS-168-D does. In the latter, there has been little difference on the temperature comparing with that measured without voltage application. Therefore, we think that it is preferable to choose the IEC-287 specification for the calculation of the continuous permissible current rating in the commercially power cables.

  • A high-efficiency method is proposed to suppress magnetic core imbalance in phase-shifted full-bridge (PSFB) converters. Compared with conventional solutions, such as controlling peak current mode (PCM) or adding DC blocking capacitance, the proposed method has several advantages, such as lower power loss and smaller size, because the additional current sensor or blocking capacitor is removed. A time domain model of the secondary side is built to analyze the relationship between transformer core imbalance and cathode voltage of secondary side rectifiers. An approximate control algorithm is designed to achieve asymmetric phase control, which reduces the effects of imbalance. A 60 V/15 A prototype is built to verify the proposed method. Experimental results show that the numerical difference of primary side peak currents between two adjacent cycles is suppressed from 2 A to approximately 0 A. Meanwhile, compared with the PCM solution, the efficiency of the PSFB converter is slightly improved from 93% to 93.2%.

  • The tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) of a ramp-edge type junction with SrTiO$_3$barrier layer has been stud-ied. The samples with a structure of glass/NiO(600${\AA}$)/Co(100${\AA}$)/SrTiO$_3$(400 ${\AA}$)/SrTiO$_3$(20-100${\AA}$)/NiFe(100${\AA}$) were prepared by the sputtering and etched by the electron cyclotron (ECR) argon ion milling. Nonlinear I-V characteristics were obtained from a ramp-type tunneling junctions, having the dominant difference between two different external magnetic fields (${\pm}$100 Oe) perpendicular to the junction edge line. In the SrTiO$_3$ barrier thickness of 40${\AA}$, the TMR was 52.7% at a bias voltage of -50 mV The bias voltage dependence of resistance and TMR in a ramp-type tunneling junction was similar with those of the layered TMR junction.

  • In this paper, we investigated the hot carrier reliability of two kinds of device with low threshold voltage (LVT) and regular threshold voltage (RVT) in 65 nm CMOS technology. Contrary to the previous report that devices beyond $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS technology is dominated by channel hot carrier(CHC) stress rather than drain avalanche hot carrier(DAHC) stress, both of LVT and RVT devices showed that their degradation is dominated by DAHC stress. It is also shown that in case of LVT devices, contribution of interface trap generation to the device degradation is greater under DAHC stress than CHC stress, while there is little difference for RVT devices.

  • This paper presents a sensorless speed control of a 2-phase switch reluctance motor(SRM). The proposed sensorless control scheme is based on the slide mode observer with parameter compensator to improve the estimation performance. In the stand still position, the initial rotor position is determined by pulse current responses of each phase windings and the current difference. In order to determine an accurate initial rotor position, the two initial rotor positions are estimated by the difference of the pulse currents. From the stand still to the operating region, a simple open loop control which determines the commutation sequence by the pulse current of the unexcited phase winding is used. When the motor speed is reached to the sensorless control region, the estimated rotor position and speed by the slide mode observer are used to control the SRM. The flux calculator used in the slide mode observer is designed by phase voltage and the voltage drops in the phase resistance of the winding. The accuracy of the flux calculator is dependent on the phase resistance. For the continuous update of the phase resistance, current gradient at the inductance break point is used in this paper. The error of the estimated rotor position at the current gradient position is used to update the phase resistance to improve the sensorless scheme. The proposed sensorless speed control scheme is verified with a practical compressor used in home appliances. And the results show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.
