마이크로디스플레이의 액정 러빙 방향과 전압 인가 방식에 따른 Disclination Line의 생성 (Generation of Disclination Line Dependent on Liquid Crystal′s Rubbing Direction and Voltage Driving Method in Microdisplays)

  • We have studied how liquid crystal's rubbing direction and voltage driving method affect generation of disclination line. At first, generation of disclination line in vertical alignment(VA) cell and VA-twisted nematic(TN) cell has been examined. When liquid crystal's rubbing direction of bottom substrate was 0$^{\circ}$, the degree of generated disclination line was the smallest value. Further, the generation of disclination line above the electrode is less in the frame inversion than in the line inversion. Secondly, we have examined a generation of disclination line in reflective fringe-field switching cell. When the distance between common electrodes is over 3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with on-state of one pixel and off-state of neighboring pixels, the reflectance appears only on-state pixel without generating reflectance in adjacent pixels.

  • In this paper, we report the fabrication of high quality polymer walls by using a monomer containing fluorine (F-monomer). Polymer walls with no phase retardation were fabricated by using photo-polymerization induced anisotropic phase separation of the mixture composed of liquid crystal (LC) and F-monomer. Thanks to the immiscibility of fluoride, we could form high quality polymer walls with no light leakage. We measured electro-optic characteristics of a twisted-nematic (TN) LC cell whose polymer walls were fabricated by using the F-monomer, and the measurements were compared with that fabricated by using the monomer without fluorine.

  • The electro-optic properties of an active-matrix polymer network liquid crystal display (AM-PNLCD) with crossed polarizer films to improve its contrast ratio were evaluated. By using crossed polarizer films, it shows good contrast ratio as well as wide viewing angle and adequate response time at normal TFT-twisted nematic (TN) LCD driving voltage (2.8V).

  • 현재 액정 표시장치는 액정의 유전율 이방성 특성에 따라 Positive LC 와 Negative LC로 구분되어 개발 된다. Positive LC에는 TN(Twisted Nematic)모드와 IP(In Plane Switching) 모드가 있다. Negative LC에는 VA(Vertical alignment) 모드가 있다. 데이타 전압을 교류구동 시키므로, LCD Pixel들은 극성반전을 하게 되며, 이때 특정 Pattern에서 화면상에 비정상적인 색깔이 나타난다. 특정 Pattern이란 데이타 전압이 교류구동을 할 때, Vcom Level이 데이타 전압에 의한 Coupling 때문에 왜곡이 발생되고, 이 왜곡에 의하여 레드, 그린, 블루 Pixel의 충전을 차가 발생해서, 화면의 좌우는 적색편향 하게 보이고, 중앙은 녹색편향 발생된다.

Generation of Disclination Line Dependent on Liquid Crystal's Rubbing Direction in Projection Displays

  • We have studied how rubbing direction affects generation of disclination line in transmissive microdisplay for $90^{\circ}$ twisted nematic (TN) mode with pixel size of $22.2{\mu}m$. The rubbing direction of bottom substrate is changed from $0^{\circ}$ to $-135^{\circ}$ with a decrease step of $45^{\circ}$, and the results show that the generation regions of the disclination line are of a smallest size in $-135^{\circ}$ direction. The results were the same although the pixel size decreased. Consequently, the use of proper rubbing direction of liquid crystal can help overcome the problems of low aperture ratio and low contrast ratio in transmissive-type microdisplays. In addition, the pretilt angle of initial liquid crystal is found to make an important contribution to generation of the disclination line.

  • 본 논문에서는 액정 셀에서 전압에 따른 액정 거동을 수치 해석적으로 계산하는 방법과 그 적용 예를 보고한다. 액정 거동을 해석하기 위해 복잡한 구조에 적용이 용이한, 3차원 유한요소법을 사용하여 액정 셀 내부의 전압 분포를 계산하였다. 액정 셀 내부에 대한 자유에너지 밀도를 고려하였으며, 에릭슨-레슬리(Ericksen-Leslie) 방정식과 라플라스(Laplace) 방정식을 해석함으로서 액정 셀의 스위칭 특성을 계산하였다. 액정 방향자 분포를 이용하여 액정 셀의 광투과 특성을 Berreman's 4$\times$4 방법으로 계산하였고, 문턱 전압과 응답 속도를 확인하였다.

  • 비균일 단축결정(inhomogeneous uniaxal)매질 내에서 빛의 전파를 Berreman의 $4{\times}4$ 행렬을 사용하여 계산할 때, 광원이 단색광일 경우 매질 내의 불연속점에서 발생하는 다중 반사로 인한 Fabry-Perot 간섭효과에 의해, 투과광은 간섭효과가 나타나게 된다. 본 논문에서는 Berreman의 $4{\times}4$ 행렬 연산에서 Fabry-Perot 간섭효과를 제거하기 위한 apodization 방법을 제시하였다. 매질내에 k개의 불연속 경계면이 있을 경우, 새로운 apodization 방법은 최대 (k+1)개의 $4{\times}4$ 행렬을 부가적으로 곱하므로써 전체 전달행렬을 계산할 수 있다. 이를 twisted-nematic(TN) LC cell의 광투과 특성 계산에 적용한 결과 간섭 패턴을 효과적으로 제거할 수 있음을 확인하였다.

스핀 코팅 공정에 따른 액정디스플레이용 폴리이미드 배향막 특성 분석 (Effect of Spin Coating Speed on Characteristics of Polyimide Alignment Layer for Liquid Crystal Display)

  • The field of liquid crystal display (LCD) is constantly in the spotlight and the process of depositing an alignment layer in the LCD manufacturing process is very important to obtain excellent performance such as low-power driving and high-speed response to improve LCD performance. Therefore, research on liquid crystal (LC) alignment is being actively conducted. When manufacturing LCD, it is necessary to consider the effect of the alignment layer thickness as one of the factors affecting various LCD performances. In addition, previous studies confirmed the LC alignment characteristics correlate with the rotation speed in the spin coating process. Therefore, the electro-optical properties of the LCD were investigated by manufacturing a polyimide alignment layer by varying the rotation speed in the spin coating process in this study. It was confirmed that the thickness of the polyimide alignment layer was controlled according to the spin coating conditions. The average transmittances of anti-parallel LC cells at the spin coating speed of 2,500 rpm and 3,000 rpm are about 60%, which indicates that the LC cell has relatively higher performance. At the spin coating speed of 3,000 rpm, the voltage-transmittance curve of twisted nematic (TN) LC cell was below 1.5 V, which means that the TN LC cell operated at a low power. In addition, high-speed operating characteristics were confirmed with a response time of less than 30 ms. From these derived data, we confirmed that the ideal spin coating speed is 3,000 rpm. And these results provide an optimized polyimide alignment layer process when considering enhanced future LCD manufacturing.

이온빔 에너지에 따른 액정배향막의 전기광학적 특성연구 (Properties of liquid crystal alignment layers exposued to ion-beam irradiation enemies)

  • In general, polyimides (PIs) are used in liquid crystal displays (LCDs) as alignment layer of liquid crystals (LCs). Up to date, the rubbing alignment technique has been widely used to align liquid crystals on the PI surface, which is suitable for mass-production of LCDs because of its simple process and high productivity. However, this method has some disadvantages. Rubbed PI surfaces include the debris left by the cloth and the generation of electrostatic charges during rubbing process. Therefore, rubbing-free techniques for LC alignment are strongly required in LCD technology. In this experiment, PI was uniformly coated on indium-tin-oxide electrode substrates to form LC alignment layers using a spin-coating method and the PI layers were subsequently imidized at 433 K for 1 h. The thickness of the PI layer was set at 50 nm. The LC alignment layer surfaces were exposed to an $Ar^+$ ion-beam under various ion-beam energies. The antiparallel cells and twisted-nematic (TN) cells for the measurement of pretile angle and electro-optical characteristics were fabricated with the cell gap of 60 and $5\;{\mu}m$, respectively. The LC cells were filled with nematic LC (NLC, MJ001929, Merck) and were assembled. The NLC alignment capability on ion-beam-treated PI was observed using photomicroscope and the pretilt angle of the NLC was measured by the crystal-rotation method at room temperature. Voltage-transmittance (V-T) and response time characteristics of the ion-beam irradiated TN cell were measured by a LCD evaluation system.
