Electro-Optic Characteristics on Photoaligned TN cell using Photopolymer Based Hydroxy Aromatic Polyimide (Hydroxy Aromatic Polyimide계 광폴리머 표면을 이용한 광배향 TN 셀의 전기광학 특성)

  • We synthesized the two types of photoalignment material of high thermal resistance with hydroxyl aromatic polyimide, and studied the liquid crystal (LC) aligning capabilities on the photopolymer layers. Also, electro-optical (EO) performances for the twisted-nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) photoaligned with linearly polarized UV exposure were investigated. A good LC alignment with UV exposure on the two types of photopolymer surface can be obtained. The Voltage-transmittance (V-T) curve in the photoaligned TN cell with UV exposure was different from two type. The response time of photoaligned TN cell was measured about 21 ms in two alkyl chain and about 15ms in four alkyl chain.

Stamping-assisted Fabrication Technique of the Bidirectional Alignment Layer for Wide-Viewing Twisted-Nematic Liquid Crystal Displays

  • A stamping-assisted rubbing technique for generating bidirectional alignment in the fabrication of wide-viewing twistednematic (TN) liquid crystal displays (LCDs) was developed. A patterned layer of a fluorinated acrylate polymer was transferred onto the first rubbed alignment layer prepared on a substrate by stamping. The fluorinated acrylate polymer provides a protective layer that covers the first alignment layer during the second rubbing process to facilitate the bidirectional alignment of the LC molecules. The LC cell in the twisted geometry with two bidirectional-alignment layers showed stable electro-optic properties and wide-viewing characteristics. The stamping-assisted rubbing technique serves as a mask-free alignment method of producing multidomains for wide-viewing LCDs.

EO Performances of the Ion Beam Aligned TN-LCD on a Carbon Nitride Thin Film Surface

  • Carbon Nitride exhibits high electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity that are similar to the properties shown by diamond-like carbon (DLC) films. These diamond-like transport properties in Carbon Nitride come in a material consisting of $sp^2$-bonded carbon versus the $sp^3$-carbon of DLC. The diamond-like properties and nondiamond-like bonding make NDLC an attractive candidate for applications. Liquid crystal (LC) alignment capabilities with ion beam exposure on carbon nitride thin films and Electro-Optical (EO) performances of the ion-beam aligned twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD) with oblique ion beam exposure on the Carbon Nitride thin film surface were studied. An excellent uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with the ion beam exposure on the Carbon Nitride thin films was observed. In addition, the good EO properties of the ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD were achieved. Finally, we achieved the residual DC property of the ion-beam- aligned TN-LCD on the Carbon Nitride thin film.

  • Recently, it is widely studied to liquid crystal (LC) alignment using ion-beam exposure. Because conventional rubbing method has some problems such as defects from dust and electrostatic charges and rubbing scratch during rubbing process. Moreover rubbing method needs cleaning process to remove these defects. Therefore rubbing-free techniques like ion-beam method are strongly required. We studied LC alignment by controlling ion-beam irradiation angles and electro-optical (EO) characteristics of twisted nematic LC on the polyimide surface. In this experiment, a good uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with the ion-beam exposure on the polyimide (PI) surface was observed. We also achieved low pretilt angle as function of ion-beam irradiation angles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) analysis provided chemical evidence for LC alignment by controlling ion-beam irradiation angles. In addition, it can be achieved the good EO properties of the ion-beam-aligned twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD) on PI surface. Some other experiments results and discussion will be included in the presentation.

  • To date, rubbing has been widely used to align LC molecules uniformly. Although rubbing can be simple, it has fundamental problems such as the generation of defects by dust and static electricity, and difficulty in achieving a uniform LC alignment on a large substrate. Therefore, non contact alignment has been investigated. Ion beam induced alignment method, which provides controllability, nonstop process, and high resolution display. In this study, we investigated liquid crystal (LC) alignment with ion beam (IB) that non contact alignment technique on polyimide and electro-optical characteristics of twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) on the polyimide under various ion beam angles. In this experiment, Polyimide layer was coated on glass by spin-coating and Voltage-transmittance(VT) and response time characteristics of the TN cell were measured by a LCD evaluation system. The good characteristics of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with the ion beam exposure polyimide surface was observed. The tilt angle of NLC on the PI surface with ion beam exposure can be measured under $1^{\circ}$ for all of irradiation angles. In addition, it can be achieved the good EO properties, and residual DC property of the ion beam aligned TN cell on polyimide surface.

  • We have studied how surface pretilt angle affects generation of disclination line in liquid-crystal-on silicon cells for 45$^{\circ}$-twisted nematic (TN) and vertical alignment (VA) modes with pixel size of 15$\mu\textrm{m}$. Our studies show that when the pretilt angle is increased from 0$^{\circ}$to 3$^{\circ}$ in the 45$^{\circ}$-TN cell, the disclination line at left side of on-pixel becomes weak and is well suppressed with $\theta$$\_$p/=3$^{\circ}$ although the pixel size Is decreased. In the VA cell, when the pretilt angle is decreased from 89$^{\circ}$ to 86$^{\circ}$, the disclination line at right side of the on-pixel is suppressed well and even for a smaller pixel size, it does not exist when $\theta$$\_$p/=86$^{\circ}$. The results inform that the pretilt angle strongly affects the image quality of microdisplays.

Pile Contact Depth Effects in Rubbed Polyimide(PI) Films

  • To determine the molecular directionality of PI chains depending on rubbing condition, we measured the angle resolved near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra at C K-edge of the rubbed PI films. Twisted nematic mode PI (PI-TN) and in plane switching mode PI (PI-IPS) were introduced to examine the effect of rubbing conditions on the chain directionality. The average tilt angle a of the PI molecules was estimated through the measured intensity change of $C=C\;{\pi}^*$ in NEXAFS C K-edge spectrum by controlling the stage speed and the pile contact depth. After rubbing, the irregular molecular direction changed to a regular direction with a molecular tilt angle of $51.2^{\circ}$ for PI-TN and $49.6^{\circ}$ for PI-IPS at the rubbing condition of the roll speed of 1000 rpm, stage speed of 50 mm/sec, and file contact depth of 0.3 mm. The molecular tilt angle $\alpha$ was linearly decreased in the PI-TN and PI-IPS samples with increasing depth of the pile contact.

  • Electro-Optical (EO) performances for the ion beam (IB) aligned twisted-nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) with ion beam exposure on the new of diamond like carbon (DLC) thin film surface were investigated. Voltage-transmittance (V-T) curve and response time without backflow bounce in the ion beam aligned TN-LCD with ion beam exposure for 0.5 and 1min on the DLC thin film was observed. Also. the fast response time of ion beam aligned TN-LCD with ion beam exposure for 1min on the DLC thin film surface can be achieved. The residual DC voltage of the ion beam aligned TN-LCD on the DLC thin film surface was almost the same as that of the rubbing aligned TN-LCD on the polyimide(PI) surface.

  • LC aligning capabilities and the variation of pretilt angles with ion beam irradiation on the a-C:H thin films, and electro-optical (EO) performances of the ion beam aligned twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) with oblique ion beam exposure on the a-C:H thin film were studied. A high pretilt angle of $3.5{^{\circ}}$ via ion beam irradiation on the a-C:H thin film was measured. Also, the LC pretilt angle decreased due to the increase in surface roughness at over 2 min of IB exposure time. It is considered that this roughness increase due to increasing IB exposure time that generated destroy of oriented rings of atoms related to LC alignment. An excellent voltage-transmittance (V-T) curve of the ion beam aligned TN-LCD was observed with oblique ion beam exposure on the a-C:H thin film for 1 min. Also, a faster response time for the ion beam aligned TN-LCD with oblique ion beam exposure on the a-C:H thin film for 1 min can be achieved. Finally, the residual DC property of the ion beam aligned TN-LCD with ion beam exposure of 1 min on the a-C:H thin film is almost same as that of the rubbing aligned TN-LCD on a PI surface.
