Effects of Feed Moisture Content on Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Corn Starch in Twin-Screw Extruder and Saccharification of the Dried Extrudates

  • The objective of this experiment was to study the influence of feed moisture content on the degree of enzymatic hydrolysis of com starch in a twin screw extruder and the saccharification yield of the dried extrudate. The feed moisture content was set at 25, 30, and 35% and ${\alpha}$-amylase solution was directly injected into the feed section at a barrel temperature of $95^{\circ}C$ and screw speed of 250 rpm. Amyloglucosidase was used for the saccharification of the dried extrudate at a concentration of 0.055%(w/w). Expansion ratio and swelling factor of extrudates decreased with increasing the feed moisture content. Addition of ${\alpha}$-amylase during extrusion process raised reducing sugar content of extrudates which also increased with the feed moisture content. The saccharification yield of dried extrudate was higher for the extrudate with lower feed moisture content.

  • The objective of this experiment was to investigate the effect of extrusion of ginseng roots in twin screw extruder on susceptibility of ginseng starch toward hydrolysis by ${\alpha}-amylase$ BAN 480L (Novozyme, Denmark) and cellulase Celluclast 150L and saccharification by amyloglucosidase AMG-E (Novozyme, Denmark). The extrusion was conducted at 22% and 30% moisture contents of feed at screw speed 300 rpm. Barrel temperature at zone 1 was adjusted at $100^{\circ}C$ and $120^{\circ}C$. The results showed that extrusion process improved the ginseng ${\alpha}-amylase$ susceptibility as compared to traditionally dried ginseng (white and red ginseng). Reducing sugar of hydrolyzed extruded samples was 2,500% of its initial concentration, whereas the reducing sugar of hydrolyzed non-extruded sample was only 200% of its initial concentration. However, addition of cellulase during liquefaction lowered the saccharification yield of both non-extruded and extruded samples as well.

Effect of Process Variables on System Parameters in Extrusion Cooking of Corn Grit by Twin Screw Extruder (옥분 압출가공시 이축압출성형기의 운전조건에 따른 System Parameters의 변화)

  • To examine the effect of the individual operational variables on extrusion process, test trials of the fractional factorial design of the three process variables at three levels, including feed rate, screw speed and die openings, were carried out by using a laboratory scale twin-screw extruder with three different screw configuration for corn grit with the water addition fixed at 15% of the powder feed rate. As the increase of feed rate, while extrusion temperature(ET), specific mechanical energy input (SME), and residence time(RT) were showed the tendency to decrease, extrusion pressure(EP) was increased and as the increase of screw speed, ET, SME and EP were showed the tendency to increase, but RT was decreased. However, as increase the number of die hole, all system parameters were showed the tendency to decrease. The influence of the change in each process parameters was increased as the increase of the number of reverse element in screw configuration. In case of using the screw configuration with increasing number of reverse element at the condition of same process parameters, ET, SME and RT was increased, but EP was decreased. The functional relationships of the system parameters to the process parameters can be quantified by using multiple regression equations(mostly R-sq>0.90) and maped on suface response diagrams to expedite evaluation.

Development of polypropylene-clay nanocomposite with supercritical $CO_2$ assisted twin screw extrusion

  • The aim of this study is to explore the possibility of incorporating supercritical carbon dioxide ($scCO_2$) into twin screw extrusion process for the production of polypropylene-clay nanocomposite (PPCN). The $CO_2$ is used as a reversible plasticizer which is expected to rapidly transport polymeric chains into the galleries of clay layers in its supercritical condition inside the extruder barrel and to expand the gallery spacings in its sub-critical state upon emerging from die. The structure and properties of the resulting PPCNs are characterized using wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), rheometry, thermogravimetry and mechanical testing. In the processing of the PPCNs with $scCO_2$, optimum $scCO_2$ concentration and screw speed which maximized the degree of intercalation of clay layers were observed. The WAXD result reveals that the PP/PP-g-MA/clay system treated with $scCO_2$ has more exfoliated structure than that without $scCO_2$ treatment, which is supported by TEM result. $scCO_2$ processing enhanced the thermal stability of PPCN hybrids. From the measurement of linear viscoelastic property, a solid-like behavior at low frequency was observed for the PPCNs with high concentration of PP-g-MA. The use of $scCO_2$ generally increased Young's modulus and tensile strength of PPCN hybrids.

Extrusion Effect on the Reduction of Fumonisin $B_1$ in Corn Grits with/or without Sugars (당류 첨가 및 비첨가 옥수수에서의 Fumonisin $B_1$ 감소에 미치는 Extrusion 효과)

  • Corn grits spiked with fumonisin B$_1$(FB$_1$) at a level of 5 $\mu$g/g were extrusion cooked in a co-rotating twin screw extruder at different temperatures(140, 160, 18$0^{\circ}C$) and screw speed(80, 100, 120 rpm). About 41~45% of the spiked FB$_1$ was lost when the corn grits were extruded. Both the barrel temperature and the screw speed. however, did not significantly affect the FBI reduction in extruded corn grits. More reduction of FB$_1$ was found in the presence of glucose than with fructose or sucrose when the corn grits were extruded with sugar at 14$0^{\circ}C$, 120 rpm. About 51, 34 and 19% of spiked FB$_1$ were remained in extruded corn grits with glucose at levels of 2.5%, 5%, and 7.5%, respectively.

Polymerization of Sugar by Extrusion

  • Glucose syrup and lactose, mixed with citric acid as a polymerizing catalyst, was processed using twin screw extruder, in which 40 of L/D(length/diameter) ratio was designed to provide sufficient retention in extruder for polymerization of sugars. The polymerization yields of glucose syrup were 36.90%, 55.44% and 77.10% at 160, 180 and 20$0^{\circ}C$, respectively, while those of lactose were 26.45%, 38.16% and 45.86% at the same temperatures. Gel permeation chromatography exhibited that the higher molecular weight fractions were increased with extrusion temperature, which also led to increasing hydrodynamic intrinsic viscosity. Both uco-oligosaccharides and lacto-oligosaccharides produced by extrusion of glucose syrup and lactose were stable for thermal treatments over a wide range of pH3.0~11.0. In addition, $\alpha$-amylase and amyloglucosidase treatment of gluco-oligosaccharides did not affect the solution viscosity, indicating the random linkage rather than $\alpha$-1, 4 linkages of glucose and thus the potential applications as a dietary fiber. In this research it was clearly observed that twin screw extrusion can be successfully utilized to produce gluco-oligosaccharides and lacto-oligosaccharides rapidly and continuously in conjunction with selective control of polymerized composition.

  • Nanocomposites are used as a new class of polymer system and many researchers have been interested in the clay nanocomposite because of its good mechanical properties, heat resistance, flame retardancy, and barrier property. Modified layered silicates as fillers are dispersed at a nanometer-level within a polymer matrix and then new extraordinary properties are observed. In this study, polypropylene/clay nanocomposites were prepared in a twin screw extruder by the melt compounding method. In order to increase the compatibility of PP with the clay, the MAPP was used as a compatibilizer. And organic modified clays were used as a nanometric filler during the melt extrusion. Through the analysis of SAXS, WAXS, the dispersion of clay was investigated. These nanocomposites compared with a neat polypropylene/talc composite have high modulus, low toughness, and reduced shrinkage at the stable dispersion.

  • Reactive monomer, glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), was grafted onto low density polyethylene (LDPE) using peroxide and then reactive blend with nylon-6 was rallied out by corotating twin screw extruder. Grafting of GMA was identified using FT-IR. Graft ratio or GMA increased with reaction temperature, peroxide concentration and styrene comonomer concentration. It is observed that tensile elongation and tensile strength or LDPE-g-GMA/nylon-6 blend were higher than those of LDPE/nylon-6 blend. Morphology of blend was analyzed using SEM.

The Processing Technology of Soy Protein Meat Analog Using Twin-Screw Extruder - Heat Transfer Analysis of Cooling Die -

  • Soy protein meat analog was produced using a twin-screw extruder attached with a cooling die. Heat transfer analysis was performed for cooling dies with various die sizes at the four different moisture contents of feed during extrusion process. The experimental design consisted of two cooling die widths (30 and 60 mm), three cooling die lengths (100, 200, and 300 mm), four product moisture contents (71.2, 67.0, 61.6 and 55.8%), and water and water plus ethylene glycol as cooling material. When water was used as cooling medium, the values of equivalent overall heat transfer coefficient $(U_e)$ for each die width of 30 and 60 mm were in the range of 187.0 - 341.4 and $358.5-191.6W/m^2^{\circ}C$ depending on the size of die length. Convective heat transfer coefficients between cooling water and inside die wall of cooling channel $(h_c)$ for both die widths of 30 and 60 mm were 588.5, 416.1, and $339.8W/m^2^{\circ}C$ for each die length of 100, 200, and 300 mm. Convective heat transfer coefficients between product and inside die wall of product channel $(h_p)$ for each die width of 30 and 60 mm were in the range of $434.6-888.1W/m^2^{\circ}C$ and $460.7-1014.5W/m^2^{\circ}C$ depending on the size of die length. When water plus ethylene glycol was used as cooling medium, the values of $U_e$ were in the range of $143.9-319.6W/m^2^{\circ}C$ and $177.8-332.7W/m^2^{\circ}C$ for each die width of 30 and 60 mm depending on the size of die length.

Effects of Peroxides on the Properties of Reclaimed Polypropylene/Waste Ground Rubber Tire Composites Prepared by a Twin Screw Extrusion

  • In this study, the reclaimed polypropylene (RPP) and waste ground rubber tire (WGRT) were used to simulate the thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) for cost reduction and resources recycling. Also, we examined the effects of dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di-(tert-butylperoxy)-hexane (DTBPH) as peroxide type cross-linking agents to enhance the properties of TPV's. The components of RPP and WGRT were fixed at 30 and 70 wt%, and DCP and DTBPH were added in the concentrations from 0.5 to 1.5 phr, respectively. RPP/WGRT composites with different contents of DCP and DTBPH were prepared by a modular intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder. The Young's modulus of composites were decreased with increasing peroxides contents. On the other hand, tensile strength, elongation at break, and impact strength of the composites were increased with peroxide contents. We also confirmed that interfacial adhesion between RPP and WGRT was considerably improved by adding the peroxides. Taken together, DTBPH added RPP/WGRT composites exhibited better mechanical properties rather than those of DCP added composites.
