The fully coupled conditional moment closure(CMC) model has been developed to realistically simulate the structure of complex turbulent nonpremixed syngas flame, in which the flame structure could be considerablyl influenced by the turbulence, transport history, and heat transfer as well. In order to correctly account for the transport effect, the CMC transport equations fully coupled with the flow and mixing fields are numerically solved. The present CMC approach has successfully demonstrated the capability to realistically predict the detailed structure and the overall combustion characteristics. The numerical results obtained in this study clearly reveal the importance of the convective and radiative heat transfer in the precise structure and NOx emission of the present confined combustor with a cooling wall.
To reveal the newly found liftoff height behavior of hydrogen jet, we have experimentally studied the stabilization mechanism of turbulent, lifted jet flames in a non-premixed condition. The objectives of the present research are to report the phenomenon of a liftoff height decreasing as increasing fuel velocity, to analyse the flame structure and behavior of the lifted jet, and to explain the mechanisms of flame stability in hydrogen turbulent non-premixed jet flames. The velocity of hydrogen was varied from 100 to 300m/s and a coaxial air velocity was fixed at 16m/s with a coflow air less than 0.1m/s. For the simultaneous measurement of velocity field and reaction zone. PIV and OH PLIF technique was used with two Nd:Yag lasers and CCD cameras. As results, it has been found that the stabilization of lifted hydrogen diffusion flames is related with a turbulent intensity, which means that combustion occurs where the local flow velocity is valanced with the turbulent flame propagation velocity.
Premixed flame is better than diffusion flame to accomplish a high loading combustion. Since the turbulent characteristics of unburned mixture has a great influence on the flame structure, it is general that many researchers realize a high loading combustion with strengthening turbulent intensity of unburned mixture. Because turbulent premixed flame reacts efficiently on the condition of distributed reaction region, we made high turbulent premixed flame in the doubled impingement field. We investigated turbulent characteristics of unburned mixture with increasing shear force and visualized flames with direct and Schlieren photographs. And the combustion characteristics of flame was elucidated by instantaneous temperature measurement with a thermocouple, by ion currents with a micro electrostatic probe, by radical luminescence intensity and local equivalence ratio. Extremely strong turbulent of small scale is generated by impingement of mixture, and turbulent intensity of unburned mixture increased with the mean velocity. As a result of direct photographs, visible region of flame became longer due to increasing central direction flux. But as strengthed turbulent intensity, visible region of flame turned to shorter and reaction occurred efficiently. As strengthened turbulent intensity of mixture with increasing flux of central direction, maximum fluctuating temperature region moved to radial direction and fluctuation of temperature became lower. The reason is influx of central direction which caused flame zone to move toward radial direction, to maintain flame zone stable and to make flame scale smaller.

The presenet research attempts to examine the combustion characteristics and the structure of the flame in turbulent premixed flames and thus enhance the combustion performance that leads to the design of the effective combustion system (untilizing LNG). Following experimental investigations for several stabilized premixed flames were attempted to identify the interactive mechanism between flame structures and flow fields; Visualization by Schlieren method, measurement of flow velocity by LDV, detection of ion current by ion probe, measurement of fluctuating temperature by thermocouple having compensation circuit, average values with respect to time of fluctuating amount for flow velocity, temperature, ion current, etc., variable RMS values, PDFs, autocorrelation, crosscorrelation, spatial macroscale, power spectra, and velocity scale. Continuing the authors published studies whose flame dominated by coherent structures and the characteristics of combustion reaction for irregular three dimensional flame and stabilized flame by step were investigated with obtained experimental quantities. Results of this research are following : The most turbulent flames support the structure of a Wrinkled laminar flame or laminar flamelets. It also observed that combustion reaction is related to small tubulence microscales of the turbulent flow fields closly.
The present study has focused on numerical investigation on the flame structure, flame lift-off and stabilization in the partially premixed turbulent lifted jet flames. Since the lifted jet flames have the partially premixed nature in the flow region between nozzle exit and flame base, level set approach is applied to simulate the partially premixed turbulent lifted jet flames for various fuel jet velocities and co-flow velocities. The flame stabilization mechanism and the flame structure near flame base are presented in detail. The predicted lift-off heights are compared with the measured ones.

The purpose of study is to investigate the flame stability and structure of turbulent diffusion flame behind the hollowed flame holder, which is located on the waste gas coming out from the test furnace. PDFs and Power Spectra technique of fluctuating temperature and ion current measurement were needed for this purpose. We discussed that the three types of stabilized flames were found as the result of post study. In this paper, we established the stability mechanism near the flame holder.
Conditional sampling measurement is required for conditional averages as well as unconditional Favre averages to resolve different flame structures of turbulent combustion. A Favre average can be obtained as an integral of conditional average and Favre PDF in terms of the mixture fraction, which is a preferred choice as a sampling variable in diffusion controlled turbulent combustion. MILD combustion data are presented as an example for a conditionally averaged data set and comparison with CMC calculation results.
A theoretical method is described to simulate the propagation of turbulent premixed flames in a closed vessel. The objective is to develop and test an efficient technique to predict the propagation speed of flame as well as the geometric structure of the flame surfaces. Flame is advected by the statistically generated turbulent flow field and propagates as a wave by solving twodimensional Hamilton-Jacobi equation. In the simulation of the unburned gas flow field, following turbulence properties were satisfied: mean velocity field, turbulence intensities, spatial and temporal correlations of velocity fluctuations. It is assumed that these properties are not affected by the expansion of the burned gas region. Predictions were compared with existing experimental data for flames propagating in a closed vessel charged with hydrogen/air mixture with various turbulence intensities and Reynolds numbers. Comparisons were made in flame radius growth rate, rms flame radius fluctuations, and average perimeter and fractal dimensions of the flame boundaries. Two dimensional time dependent simulation resulted in correct trends of the measured flame data. The reasonable behavior and high efficiency proves the usefulness of this method in difficult problems of flame propagation such as in internal combustion engines.
The present work determined the flame structure characteristics of coal syngas combusted inside swirl burners with various nozzle types. Fuel nozzle types are largely classified into two groups of axial and tangential. Experiments were carried out for investigating the effects of fuel nozzle geometry, fuel composition ratio, heating rate, excess air, and degree of swirl on the turbulent diffusion flame structure. To determine the characteristics of the flame structure, axial type fuel nozzle diameter of laboratory-scale combustor is varied to 1.23, 1.96, and 2.95 ㎜ and the direction of tangential type nozzles are varied to radial, clockwise, and counter-clockwise. The comparison of the experimental results was performed to understand functional parameters relating the flame structure. Data analysis showed that the vertical straight flame height generally decreased with increasing swirl number and decreasing axial type nozzle diameter. Flame height established with tangential type nozzle is 3 times shorter than that with vertical type. The flame structures among the 3 different tangential fuel nozzles relatively showed no particular difference. By increasing the heating rate, the width of flame increased generally in both vertical and tangential flame. Within the present experimental parameters of the investigation, flame structure is mainly depends on the nozzle type of the combustor. The visually investigated flame lengths are confirmed through the analysis of temperature profile of each flame.
