The effect of thermal stratification on the turbulent dispersion from a fine cylindrical heat source was experimentally examined in a wind tunnel with and without a strong temperature gradient. A 0.5 mm dia. nichrome wire was used as a line heat source. Turbulent intensities, r.m.s. value of temperature and convective heat fluxes were measured by using a hot-wire and cold-wire combination probe. The results show that the peack value and the spread of the vertical turbulent intensity for the stratified case are far lower than those in the neutral case, which indicates that the stable temperature gradient suppresses the vertical velocity component. All of the third order moments including heat fluxes measured in the stable condition have very small values than those of the neutral case. This nature suggests that the decrease of scalar fluctuations in the stably stratified flow is mainly due to the suppression ofthe turbulent diffusion processes by the stable stratification. A simple gradient model with a composite timescale which has a simple weighted algebraic mean between dynamic and thermal time scale yields reasonably good numerical values in comparison with the experimental data.
LES analysis was conducted with in-house CFD code to investigate the turbulence evolution and interaction due to turbulence ring and splash plate in the gas generator. Though chemical reaction was not accounted for, the results can be useful in determining the turbulence characteristics generated by ring and plate. The calculation results show that the installation of turbulence ring can introduce additional turbulences and improve turbulent mixing in the downstream flow. However, the addition of splash plate in the downstream of TR brings totally different shape of perturbation energy and enstrophy distribution for turbulent mixing. This enhancement can be done by the formation of the intensively strong vorticity production and mixing behind the plate. Pressure drop was found to be a reasonable level of about 1% or less of initial pressure in all calculation cases. Also, calculation results revealed that the variation of TR shape and intrusion length did not change the characteristics of turbulent mixing in the chamber. Even though the effect of installation location of splash plate on the turbulent mixing is not investigated yet, calculation results conclude the addition of splash plate leads to the increase in turbulent mixing with an acceptable pressure drop.
The present study investigates turbulent flows subject to strong wall injection in a channel through a Direct Numerical Simulation technique. These flows are pertinent to internal flows inside the hybrid rocket motors. A simplified model problem where a regression process at the wall is idealized by the wall blowing has been studied to gain a better understanding of how the near-wall turbulent structures are modified. As the strength of wall blowing increases, the turbulence intensities and Reynolds shear stress increase rapidly and this is thought to result from the shear instability induced by the injected flows at the wall. Also, turbulent viscosity grows rapidly as the flow moves downstream. Thus, the effect of wall-blowing modifies the state of turbulence significantly and more sophisticated turbulence modeling would be required to predict this type of flows accurately.
The buoyancy-driven turbulent thermal convection is predicted using an anisotropic hybrid turbulence model, which is incorporated with a low Reynolds k-.epsilon. turbulence model and an anisotropic buoyant part of algebraic stress model(ASM). The numerical predictions are compared with the Davidson's model,(1) the full ASM and the experimental results of Cheesewright et al.(2) All the models are shown to predict good agreements with the experiments for the averaged turbulence quantities. It is found that the effect of an anisotropic part on the Reynolds stress and the turbulent heat fluxes is substantial. In this study, the present hybrid model gives a fairly reasonable prediction in terms of the computational accuracy, convergence and stability. The contribution of an anisotropic buoyant part to turbulent heat fluxes are also scrutinized over the range of Rayleigh numbers $(4.79{\times}10^{10}{\le}Ra{\le}7.46{\times}10^{10}).$
The purpose of this study is to experimentally research the effects of polymer additives on turbulent transition of Couette flow between concentric cylinders when outer one is rotating and inner one is at rest; the diameter ratio being 0.2. Aqueous polymer solution generate the degradation phenomena in machine forming work, but this is not effected in about 10 minute at 5ppm. aqueous polymer solution testing. The Reynolds number, referred to the gap distance and rotation velocity of the outer cylinder, of turbulent transition is about 20000 for water flow. In the laminer region, the torque value is as same as theoretical one in the region of low Reynolds number, but becomes high with an increase in the Reynolds number. The polymer additives reduce the Reynolds number for turbulent transtition. In the turbulent region, the torque is remarkably reduced by the polymer additives, soluble polymer take down effect of turbulent transition boundary torque.
In order to investigate the effect of turbulent intensity on combustion characteristics, new flame factor model was developed. The principal study is the evaluation of interaction of swirl, tumble and unstrutural component of flow characteristics and correlation between turbulent intensity and flame factor. Computational and experimental study has been, performed such as quasi-dimensional cycle simulation, three dimensional flow analysis, engine performance test and diagnostic simulation. From these studies, it was found that flame factor was a function of engine speed and turbulent intensity.
A suboptimal control law in turbulent pipe flow is derived and tested. Two sensing variables ${\partial}p/{\partial}{\theta}\;|_w\;and\;{\partial}{\upsilon}_{\theta}/{\partial}r\;|_w$ are applied with two actuations ${\phi}_{\theta}$ and ${\phi}_r$. To test the suboptimal control law, direct numerical simulations of turbulent pipe flow at $Re_r=150$ are performed. When the control law is applied, a $13{\sim}23%$ drag reduction is achieved. The most effective drag reduction is made at the pair of ${\partial}{\upsilon}_{\theta}/{\partial}r\;|_w$ and ${\theta}_r$. An impenetrable virtual wall concept is useful for analyzing the near-wall suction and blowing. The virtual wall concept is useful for analyzing the near-wall behavior of the controlled flow. Comparison of the present suboptimal control with that of turbulent channel flow reveals that the curvature effect is insignificant.
Experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of the initial turbulent intensity on the flow and heat transfer characteristics for a two-dimensional impinging jet. A square rod was installed at the nozzle exit to increase initial turbulent intensity. A hot wire probe and thermochromic liquid crystal technique were used to measure the turbulent intensity and the surface temperature. All measurements were made over a range of nozzle-to-plate distance from 1 to 10 at Re=20,000. When the rod is not installed, the maximum stagnation point Nusselt number is occurred at H/B=9. A higher initial turbulent intensity enhanced the heat transfer on the surface. A correlation between stagnation point Nusselt number and turbulent intensity are presented.
The present study numerically investigate detailed flame structure of the Syngas diffusion flames. In order to realistically represent the turbulence-chemistry interaction and the spatial inhomogeneity of scalar dissipation rate, the Eulerian Particle Flamelet Model(EPFM) with multiple flamelets has been applied to simulate the combustion processes and NOx formation in the syngas turbulent nonpremixed flames. And level-set approach is also utilized to account for the partially premixing effect at fuel and oxidizer injector in KEPRI nonpremixed combustor. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussion has been made for the precise structure and NOx formation characteristics of the turbulent syngas nonpremixed flames.
