Effect of Oxygen Enriched Air on the Combustion of a Turbulent Diffusion Flat Flame (산소부화공기가 난류 확산 평면화염의 연소에 미치는 영향)

  • Combustion using oxygen enriched air is an energy saving technology that can increase thermal efficiency by the improvement of burning rate and by the high temperature flame. Flame figures, OH radical intensities, temperature distributions and emission concentrations were measured according to oxygen enriched concentration and swirl number in a turbulent diffusion flat flame. It appeared that flame figure became flat and NO concentration decreased with increase of swirl number, and that the flame temperature increased high with increase of oxygen enriched concentration. In particular, it was most significant between oxygen concentration $40{\sim}60%$.

  • This paper presents the design concept, theoretical investigation, and fabrication of a six-degree of freedom (6-DOF) turbulent flow micro sensor utilizing the piezoresistive effect in silicon. Unlike other flow sensors, which typically measure just one component of wall shear stress, the proposed sensor can independently detect six components of force and moment on a test particle in a turbulent flow. By combining conventional and four-terminal piezoresistors in Si (111), and arranging them suitably on the sensing area, the total number of piezoresistors used in this sensing chip is only eighteen, much fewer than the forty eight piezoresistors of the prior art piezoresistive 6-DOF force sensor.

  • The RPV(Reaction Progress Variable) combustion model has been applied to numerically investigate the effects of Damkohler number on the superequilibrium concentration and flame structure in the nonpremixed turbulent flames. Computations are performed for the two turbulent jet flames of CO/H$_2$/N$_2$(40/30/30 volume percent) having the same jet Reynolds number of 16,700 but different nozzle diameters(4.58mm and 7.72mm). The detailed discussions have been made for the interaction between fluid dynamics and chemistry in the flame field.

  • Hybrid propulsion systems provide many advantages in terms of stable operation and safety. However, classical hybrid rocket motors have lower fuel regression rate and combustion efficiency compared to solid propellant rocket motor. The recent research efforts are focused on the improvement of volume limitation and regression rate in the hybrid rocket engine. The present study has numerically investigated the combustion processes in the hybrid rocket engine. The turbulent combustion is represented by the eddy breakup model and Hiroyasu and Nagle and Strickland-Constable model are used for soot formation and soot oxidation. Radiative heat transfer is modeled by finite volume method. To reduce the uncertainties for convective heat transfer near solid fuel surface having strong blowing effect, the Low Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model is employed. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussion has been made for the turbulent combustion processes in the vortex hybrid rocket engine.

  • The turbulent flow characteristics of impinging jet have been investigated by the hot wire anemometry with a movable impinging wall. Turbulences were generated by the meshed jet as well as the typical round jet and their characteristics were compared, of mean velocity profiles, turbulent intensities. Reynolds stresses, similarities and their centerline flow behaviors. The meshed jet tends to make shear layer wider than the normal one in the initial region and the velocity profiles of the normal jet is rather contractive being compared with those of the meshed one near the wall. The effect of meshed exit appears only within 4D at the begining of jets and the cascading process of the meshed one marches more rapidly than that of the normal jet. The wall effects appear in the downstream of about 0.85 H to the impinging wall for every case of wall positions in both nozzles.

  • The three-dimensional turbulent wingtip vortex flows have been examined in the present study by using the commercial code FLUENT. The standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model is used as a closure relationship. The wing is constructed by using an elliptic body whose aspect ratio is 3.8 and the NACA 16-020 airfoil section. The simulations for various angle attack (${\alpha}=0^{\circ}$, $5^{\circ}$, and $10^{\circ}$) are carried out. The effect of Reynolds number is also investigated in this study. As the angle attack increases, the wingtip vortex becomes stronger. However, the relative vortex strength to inlet velocity decreases as Reynolds number increases.

  • When an optical pulse is propagated through the atmosphere space, it is attenuated and broadened by the effect of atmospheric turbulence. This pulse broadening is occurred by the fluctuation in the arrival time of pulse at an optical receiver. In digital optical communication, the attenuation is important factor but the pulse broadening is more important. In this paper, thus, we will find the broadening of pulse propagated through the turbulent atmosphere, present it as the function of the structure constant for the refractive index fluctuation, and simulate it to the turbulent strength and the transmission length.

  • Local condensation heat transfer coefficients in tubes were calculated by solving momentum and energy equations for annular film with liquid entrainment. The turbulent eddy distribution across the liquid film has been proposed and the calculated heat transfer coefficients were presented. Also turbulent Prandtl number effects on condensation heat transfer were discussed from three Pr$\_$t/ models. Finally, the calculated condensation heat transfer coefficients of R22 were compared with some correlations frequency referred to in open literature. This calculation model considering liquid entrainment predicted well the in-tube condensation heat transfer coefficient of R22 than the model not considering liquid entrainment. The effect of entrainment on heat transfer was predominant for high quality and high mass flux when the liquid film was turbulent.

Detailed Spectroscopic Measurements of Chemiluminescence from Turbulent Premixed Flames in a Dump Combustor

  • This paper presents results of experimental study of flame chemiluminescence from turbulent premixed flames in a dump combustor. A detailed spectroscopic measurement of chemiluminescence over the wavelength of 405-495 nm is made for various flow conditions. No effect of turbulence on the relationship between chemiluminescence and heat release is found, suggesting the overall chemiluminescence intensity collected be used as a measure of overall heat release for non-oscillating stable flame. The background-$CO_2^*$ subtracted $CH^*$ chemiluminescence is found to be more sensitive to the equivalence ratio and premixedness of fuel-air mixture than $CO_2^*$ chemiluminescence.

Effect of a vertical guide plate on the wind loading of an inclined flat plate

  • Wind tunnel experiments were performed to study the wind loads on an inclined flat plate with and without a guide plate. Highly turbulent flow, which corresponded to free-stream turbulence intensity on the flat roof of low-rise buildings, was produced by a turbulence generation grid at the inlet of the test section. The test model could represent a typical solar collector panel of a solar water heater. There are up-stream movements of the separation bubble and side-edge vortices, more intense fluctuating pressure and a higher bending moment in the turbulent flow. A guide plate would result in higher lift coefficient, particularly with an increased projected area ratio of a guide plate to an inclined flat plate. The value of lift coefficient is considerably lower with increased free-stream turbulent intensity.
