  • The subject of turbulent premixed flames has been focused by many researchers for a number of decades. Especially, Borghi suggested a magnificent diagram classifying turbulent combustion areas and Lipatnikov and Chomiak modified this diagram. Recently, experimental techniques have been developed so that we can use PIV for measuring 2D velocity field and apply OH PLIF techniques for obtaining flame locations. In present study, a new diagram is proposed using strain rates and OH signal intensity. Thus, simultaneous PIV and OH PLIF measurements are used for shear strain rates and flame locations, respectively. It is believed that the shear strain rates represent flow characteristics such as turbulence intensity and the OH intensity indicates the flame characteristics such as burning velocities.

  • Breakup characteristics of liquid sheets formed by the impingement of two water jets, such as a breakup length and a breakup wavelength of sheet, were investigated as increasing the injection velocity up to 30m/s and the ambient gas pressure up to 4.0㎫. While round edged orifices formed a laminar sheet which has no waves on the sheet when the injection velocity is low, sharp edged orifices formed a turbulent sheet which has impact waves irrespective of the injection velocity. Thus we compared the differences of breakup characteristics between them. The results showed that the aerodynamic force significantly affects the breakup of laminar sheet when the gas based Weber number is higher than unity. It was also found that the turbulent sheets have three breakup regimes, i.e. expansion regime, wave breakup regime and catastrophic breakup regime according to the gas based Weber number.

  • An experiment was performed to investigate lift-off, blow-off and combustion characteristics of a lifted coaxial diffusion flame according to fuel jet and air velocity. A jet diffusion flame which is attached on the nozzle rim begins to be lifted with increase of air velocity, and finally becomes blow-off at higher air velocity. In experiment, blow-off limit increased with increase of fuel jet velocity, however lift-off occurred at lower air velocity. Flame structure and combustion characteristics were examined by schlieren photos, temperature distributions and emission concentration distributions. Flame temperature became higher at midstream and its RMS became larger at up and downstream with increase of air velocity. Local NO concentration decreased but $CO_2$concentration increased with increase of air velocity, which shows combustion reaction becomes close to be stoichiometric at higher air velocity in spite of lift-off.

  • The particles velocity in the instantaneous flow field and velocity change of particles along the jet centerline for various particle diameter in a circular turbulent impingement jet are investigated by using particle image velocimetry(PIV) and an equation of particle motion simplified by terms of inertia forces, drag and gravitational force. The jet Reynolds number was 3300 and 8700, and glass beads of 30,58 and 100$\mu$m in diameter were used. The PIV results show that the direction and size of velocity depends not only on the number density of particle but also on the particle momentum. The results obtained form calculation suggest that the particle velocity near the first impingement region deviated from local air velocity, which accords well with the PIV results. The rebound height of particle increase with the particle diameter. In the second-impingement, particle velocities increased sluggishly with Re=3300 but particle velocities uniformed with Re=8700 in stagnation region.

  • This paper presents the development of a two-dimensional model for investigating the fluid flow in water jet and calculating the velocity and pressure distributions. The mathematical formulation as a standard k-$\epsilon$ model was solved employing a general thermofluid-mechanics computer program, PHOENICS code, which is based on the Semi-Implicit Method Pressure Linked Equations(SIMPLE) algorithm. The developed code was applied to water jet design to determine the nozzle size, and investigated the effect of the change of nozzle location. Calculated results showed that the flow pattern is not changed as the change of nozzle location.

  • The numerical research has been done for the transverse jet behind a rearward- facing step in turbulent supersonic flow without chemical reaction. The purpose of transverse jet is used to improve mixing of the fuel in the combustor. Two- dimensional unsteady flowfields generated by slot injection into supersonic flow are numerically simulated by the integration of Navier-Stokes equation with two-equation k - $\varepsilon$ turbulence model. Numerical methods are used high-order upwind TVD scheme. Eight cases are computed, comprising slot momentum flux ratios and slot position at downstream of the step. The flow is very similar to the cavity flow, because the jet is like an obstacle. Therefore, the numerical results show the periodic phenomenon.

  • This paper presents both experimental and numerical studies regarding nozzles used for the SI engine application, particularly for the intake-port fuel injection type. The atomization mechanism of the multi-hole plate nozzle was investigated experimentally. It was found that the nozzle design added turbulence into the liquid-film jet and the jet disintegrated rapidly. Based on the results, various plate types for the nozzle were developed and tested; six hole nozzle for liquid jet interaction, plate-type nozzle with flat duct channel, and the simpler structured nozzle. The spray characteristics of the prototype nozzles were examined experimentally while the internal flow of the nozzle was investigated computationally. It was shown that turbulent liquid-film was injected and atomization quality was improved by controlling the internal flow condition of the plate-type nozzle.

  • Algebraic Reynolds Stress (ARS) model is applied in order to analyze the turbulent flow of wall-attaching offset jet and to evaluate the model's predictability. The applied numerical schemes are upwind scheme and skew-upwind scheme. The numerical results show good prediction in first order calculations (i.e., reattachment length, mean velocity, pressure), while they show slight deviations in second order (i.e., kinetic energy and turbulence intensity). By comparison with the previous results using $k-{\varepsilon}$ model, ARS model predicts better than the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model, however, predicts slightly worse than the $k-{\varepsilon}$ model including the streamline curvature modification. Additionally this study can reconfirm that skew-upwind scheme has approximately 25% improved predictability than upwind scheme.

  • Piezoelectric actuators have been investigated for flow control in the field of fluid dynamics. Numerical simulation for a single diaphragm piezoelectric actuator operating in quiescent air is performed to investigate the complex flow field around the slot exit. A periodic velocity transpiration condition is applied to simulate the effect of the moving diaphragm. The computational results for the flow field around the slot exit agree well with the experimental data. The results also show that low pressure regions due to the vortex pairing cause non-monotonic variations in the vertical velocity.

  • A 4D-PTV system was constructed. The measurement system consists of three high-speed high-definition cameras, Nd-Yag laser and a host computer. The GA-3D-PTV algorithm was used for completing the measurement system. A horizontal impinged jet flow was measured. The Reynolds number is about 40,000. Spatial temporal evolution of the jet flow was examined and physical properties such as spatial distributions of vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy were obtained with the constructed system.
