Computations of the mean and turbulence flows over three-dimensional hill of conical shape have implemented. Beside the standard $\kappa-\epsilon$, two other modifications proposed by Detering & Etling and Duynkerke for atmospheric applications were also considered. These predictions were compared with the data of a wind tunnel experiment. From the comparison, it was concluded that all three models predict the mean flow velocities equally well while only the Duynkerke's model accurately predicts the turbulence data statistics. It also concluded that there are large discrepancies between model predictions and the measurements near the ground surface. The flow field, which was obtained by using the Duynkerke's modification, was used to simulate gas dispersion from an upwind source. The calculation results are verified based on the measurement data. Modifications of the turbulent Schmidt number were carried out in order to match the measured results. The code was used to investigate the influence of the recirculation zone behind a building of cubical shape on the transport and dispersion of pollutant. For a stack behind and near the obstacle, some conclusions about the effect of the stack height and stack location were derive

Heat (mass) transfer characteristics have been investigated on the endwall of a large-scale linear turbine cascade. Its profile is based on the mid-span of the first-stage rotor blade in a industrial gas turbine. By using the naphthalene sublimation technique, local heat (mass) transfer coefficients are measured for two different free-stream turbulence intensities of 1.3% and 4.7%. The results show that local heat (mass) transfer Stanton number is widely varied on the endwall, and its distribution depends strongly on the three-dimensional vortical flows such as horseshoe vortices, passage vortex, and corner vortices. From this experiment, severe heat loads are found on the endwall near the blade suction side as well as near the leading and trailing edges of the blade. In addition, the effect of the free-stream turbulence on the heat (mass) transfer is also discussed in detail.

Recently, the use of numerical simulation has been increased rapidly because of the development of high performance computer systems. The present study is aimed to investigate flow characteristics of a two-dimensional sharp plane. Unsteady calculation by FDM(Finite Difference Method) based upon SOLA scheme which was performed at $Re=2{\times}10^4$in viscous incompressible flow within a finite domain on the irregular grid formation. Total numbers of irregular grids are $8{\times}10^4$. The minimum grid size is 1/100 of the plane length L which is the representative length. The inclined angles of every objects are $15^{\circ}, \;30^{\circ}\;and\; 45^{\circ}.$ And, the edge angle of the plane is $30^{\circ}.$ This study discussed the flow characteristics in term of the turbulent intensity, vorticity and frequency analysis. Developed flows show that the periodic Karman vortices occur at the back of the plane.
Spiral jet is characterized by a wide region of the free vortex flow with a steep axial velocity gradient, while swirl jet is largely governed by the forced vortex flow and has a very low axial velocity at the jet axis. However, detailed generation mechanism of spiral flow components is not well understood, although the spiral jet is extensively applied in a variety of industrial field. In general, it is known that spiral jet is generated by the radial flow injection through an annular slit which is installed at the inlet of a conical convergent nozzle. The present study describes a computational work to investigate the effects of annular slit on the spiral jet. In the present computation, a finite volume scheme is used to solve three dimensional Naver-Stokes equations with RNG ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. The annular slit width and the pressure ratio of the spiral jet are varied to obtain different spiral flows inside the conical convergent nozzle. The present computational results are compared with the previous experimental data. The results obtained obviously show that the annular slit width and the pressure ratio of the spiral jet strongly influence the characteristics of the spiral jets, such as tangential and axial velocities.

For a high speed train driving at 300 km/h, aero-acoustic noise is a dominant component among various noise sources. The aeroacoustic noise is mainly due to inter-coach spacings because discontinuities in the train surface significantly disturb turbulent flows. This often leads to the uncomfortableness of passengers. Interestingly, the aero-acoustic noise reduces with decreasing the mud-flap spacing of the inter-couch spacing. We perform numerical simulations to investigate flow characteristics around the inter-coach spacing. We model the inter-coach spacing as a simple 2-D cavity with flaps, and calculate the velocity and pressure field using two equation turbulence models, varying the flap spacing. The results show that a wider flap spacing develops a higher inflection point in mean velocity profiles over the cavity. It is likely that large eddies generated near the inflection point persist longer in the downstream since they are less affected by the wall. This probably induces the more aero-acoustic noises. The wider spacing also results in the larger pressure difference between the inside and outside of the cavity. This is also responsible for the increased noise since the large difference would cause a strong flow oscillations in and out of the cavity.

A numerical analysis based on two-dimensional and three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations has been carried out for double-circular-arc (DCA) compressor cascades. Two types of double-circular-arc cascades were used in this analysis. The appropriate turbulence model for compressor analysis was selected among the conventional turbulence models such as Baldwin-Lomax, k-$\varepsilon$ and k-$\varepsilon$ models. The results of current study were compared with available experimental data at various incidence angles. The 2-D and 3-D computational codes based on SIMPLE/PWIM algorithm for collocated grid and hybrid scheme for the convective terms were the main features of numerical tools. As commonly known, turbulence modeling is very important for the prediction of cascade flows, which are extremely complex with separation and reattachment by adverse pressure gradient. For selection of turbulence model, 2-D analysis was performed. And then, k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model with wall function chosen as the reasonable turbulence model for 3-D calculation was used to increase the efficiency of computation times. A reasonable result of 3-D flow pattern passing through the double-circular-arc cascade was obtained.
A computational fluid dynamics model for predicting moderator circulation inside the Canada deuterium uranium (CANDU) reactor vessel has been developed to estimate the local subcooling of the moderator in the vicinity of the calandria tubes. The buoyancy effect induced by the internal heating is accounted for by the Boussinesq approximation. The standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model with logarithmic wall treatment is applied to predict the turbulent jet flows from the inlet nozzles. The matrix of the calandria tubes in the core region is simplified to a porous media in which the anisotropic hydraulic impedance is modeled using an empirical correlation of pressure loss. The governing equations are solved by DFX-4.4, a commercial CFD code developed by AEA technology. The resultant flow patterns of the constant-z slices containing the inlet nozzles and the outlet port are "mined-type", as observed in the former 2-dimensional experimental investigations. With 103% full power for conservatism, the maximum temperature of the moderator is $82.9^{\circ}C$ at the top of the core region. Considering the hydrostatic pressure change, the minimum subcooling is $24.8^{\circ}C$.
A three-dimensional thermal hydrodynamic model is developed for carrying out unsteady simulation of the selective withdrawal of the stably stratified flow in a geometrically complex, natural reservoir The governing equations are discretized on a non-staggered grid using a second-order accurate, finite-volume scheme. The numerical model is validated by applying it to simulate three-dimensional, turbulent, stratified, shear-layer flow case. The numerical predictions appear to capture reasonably well the general shape of velocity and temperature profiles observed in the laboratory experiments, while significant overestimation of the magnitude of velocity profiles is observed in the application to the flow in a natural reservoir. The physics of selective withdrawal as emerge from the numerical simulations are also discussed.

A computational study of vortex-induced transverse vibrations of a cylinder with low mass-damping is presented. An Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation of the Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations (URANS), along with the Spalart-Allmaras (SA) one-equation turbulence model, are coupled conservatively with rigid body motion equations of the cylinder mounted on elastic supports in order to study the amplitude and frequency response of a freely vibrating cylinder, its flow-induced motion, Vortex Street, near-wake flow structure, and unsteady loading in a moderate range of Reynolds numbers. The time accurate response of the cylinder from rest to its limit cycle is studied to explore the effects of Reynolds number on the start of large displacements, motion amplitude, and frequency. The computational results are compared with published physical experiments and numerical studies. The maximum amplitudes of displacements computed for various Reynolds numbers are smaller than the experimental values; however, the overall agreement of the results is quite satisfactory, and the upper branch of the limit-cycle displacement amplitude vs. reduced velocity response is captured, a feature that was missed by other studies. Vortex shedding modes, lock-in phenomena, frequency response, and phase angles are also in agreement with experiments.
