The turbulent flow characteristics in a coaxial injector were investigated by the nonlinear $k-{\varepsilon}-f_{\mu}$ model of Park et al.[1] and large eddy simulation (LES). In order to analyze the geometric effects on the scalar mixing for nonreacting variable-density flows, several recessed lengths and momentum flux ratios are selected at a constant Reynolds number. The nonlinear $k-{\varepsilon}-f_{\mu}$ model proposed the meaningful characteristics for various momentum flux ratios and recess lengths. The LES results showed the changes of small-scale structures by the recess. When the inner jet was recessed, the development of turbulent kinetic energy became faster than that of non-recessed case. Also, the mixing characteristics were mainly influenced by the variation of shear rates, but the local mixing was changed by the adoption of recess.
Numerical simulations and experiment of a hydrodynamic and thermally developed turbulent flow through square ducts (3.0 ${\times}$ 3.0 cm) with twisted tape inserts and with twisted tape inserts plus interrupted ribs are conducted to investigate regionally averaged heat transfer and friction factors. Turbulent swirl flows having Reynolds numbers ranging from 8,900 to 29,000, a rib height-to-channel hydraulic diameter(e/D$_h$) of 0.067, and a length-to-hydraulic diameter(L/D$_h$) of 30, are considered. The square ribs are arranged to follow the trace of the twisted tape and along the flow direction defined as axial interrupted ribs. The twisted tape has 0.1 mm thick carbon steel sheet with diameter of 2.8 cm, length of 90 cm, and 2.5 turns. Each wall is composed of isolated aluminum sections, and two cases of surface heating are set. The results show that uneven surface heating enhances the heat transfer coefficient over uniform heating conditions, and square ducts with twisted tape inserts plus interrupted ribs produces the best overall transfer performance.

The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the equations of the k-.epsilon. turbulence model are solved numerically in a general curvilinear system for a three-dimensional turbulent flow around an Ahmed body. The simulation is especially aimed at the evaluation of three finite differencing schemes for the convection term, which include the upwind differencing scheme(UDS), the second order upwind differencing scheme(SOU scheme) and the QUICK scheme. The drag coefficient, the velocity and pressure fields are found to be changed considerably with the adopted finite differencing schemes. It is clearly demonstrated that the large difference between computation and experiment in the drag coefficient is due to relatively high predicted values of pressure drag from both front part and vertical rear end base. The results also show that the simulation with the QUICK or SOU scheme predicts fairly well the flow field and gives more accurate drag coefficient than other finite differencing scheme.

Erosion-corrosion in a pipe system often occurs at fittings, valves, and weld beads where flow separation and reattachment yield high turbulence intensity. Thus identifying their correlations would be the first step towards resolving the erosion-corrosion problems associated with industrial applications. Bremhorst of the Univ. of Queensland, Australia, proposed that a rotating cylinder with surface roughness (two backward-facing steps periodically mounted on a circular cylinder) be an economical and tractable tool which can generate extreme flow conditions for erosion-corrosion study. In this work, DNS has been carried out for turbulent flows around the same rotating cylinder as his experimental apparatus. Our result shows that a region of intense turbulence intensity and high wall-shear stress fluctuation is formed along the cylinder surface in the recirculating region behind the step, where high mass-transfer capacity is also experimentally observed. Since corrosion is mass-transfer controlled, our finding sheds light on the direction of future corrosion research.
Large eddy simulation (LES) is increasingly used as a tool for studying the dynamics of turbulence in combustion chamber flows due to the promise of wider generality and more accurate results compared to Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) models. This study presents the appropriate subgrid-scale(SGS) model in LES for predicting the turbulent flow field in the internal combustion engine. The study of the effects of model and numerical parameters such as discretization scheme, initial condition, time step and SGS model was performed. The results of LES using the SGS model were found to be in the good agreement with experimental data.

This article presents an application of a large-scale structural mixing model(Broadwell et at. 1984) to the blowout of turbulent reacting cross flow jets. Experimental observations, therefore, aim to identify the existence of large-scale vortical structure exerting an important effect upon the flame stabilization. In the analysis of common stability curve, it is seen that the phenomenon of blowout are only related to the mixing time scale of the two flows. The most notable observation is that the blowout distance is traced at a fixed positions according to the velocity ratio at all times. Measurements of the lower blowout limits in the liftable flame are qualitatively in agreement with the blowout parameter $\xi$, proposed by Broadwell et al. Good agrement between the results calculated by a modified blowout parameter $\xi$'and the present experimental results confirms the important effect of large-scale structure in the stabilization feature of blowout.

A Study on the trombe wall system, a kind of passive solar systems, has been performed numerically. The system is treated as a two-dimensional steady turbulent natural convection including constant heat source per unit area. The numerical code, "PHOENICS, " was employed to analyze this conduction-convection conjugated heat transfer. The general mode of the flow field was examined, and the exchange of mass between two recirculating flows is found to be the major mechanism of the heat transfer. It is shown that the performance is affected by the changes in the geometrical factors-the thickness of the wall, the width between the windowand the wall, and size of the vents. Further analysis has been performed to show the optimal geometry with regard to the last two factors.o factors.

Computational study on the passive control of the oblique shock-wave/turbulent boundary-layer interaction utilizing slotted plates over a cavity has been carried out. The numerical boundary layer profile upstream of the interaction follows the compressible turbulent boundary-layer theory reasonably well, and the other results also show good agreements with the experimental observations, such as the wall surface pressures and Schlieren flow visualizations. Further, the effects of various slot configuration including number, location and angle of the slots on the characteristics of the interactions, such as the variation of the total pressures, the boundary-layer characteristics downstream of the interaction and the recirculating mass flux through the slots, are also tested and compared.

This paper is a numerical study concerning how the interactions between a pair of the vortices effect flow field and heat transfer. The flow field (common flow down) behind a vortex generator is modeled by the information that is available from studies on a half-delta winglet. Also, the energy equation and the Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes equation for three-dimensional turbulent flows, together with a two-layer turbulence model to resolve the near-wall flow, are solved by the method of AF-ADI. The present results predict that the boundary layer is thinned in the regions where the secondary flow is directed toward the wall and thickened where it Is directed away from the wall. Although some discrepancies are observed near the center of the vortex core, the overall performance of the computational model is found to be satisfactory.

A new technique giving significant drag reduction in turbulent shear flows has been proposed by using the buoyancy effect to generate periodic spanwise motion. Such spanwise motion can be obtained by arranging heating and cooling strips periodically aligned in the spanwise direction of a vertical channel, where the streamwise mean flow is perpendicular to the gravity vector The strip size has been changed in order to obtain the optimum size corresponding to the maximum drag reduction. The bulk Reynolds number, $ Re_{m} = U_{m} \delta / \nu \$ is fixed at 2270 while Grashof numbers is changed between $10^{6}$ to $10^{7}$. As Grashof number increases, considerable drag reduction can be obtained, At the highest Grashof number, an optimum strip size of about 250 wail units gives drag reduction of about 35$\%$. The greater the Grashof number, the smaller the strip size attains the maximum drag reduction.
