Turbulent flows around tube banks and in the diffuser were studied using a non-orthogonal boundary fitted coordinate system and the modified K-.epsilon. turbulence model. In these cases, many problems emerge which stem from the geometrical complexity of the flow domain and the physical complexity of turbulent flow itself. To treat the complex geometry, governing equations were reformulated in a non-orthogonal coordinate system with Cartesian velocity components and discretised by the finite volume method with a non-staggered variable arrangement. The modified K-.epsilon. model of Hanjalic and Launer was applied to solve above two cases under the condition of strong and mild pressure gradient. The results using the modified K-.epsilon. model results in both test cases.

Numerical simulations are performed to investigate the turbulent convective heat transfer of the supercritical carbon dioxide flows in vertical and horizontal square ducts. The gas cooling process at the supercritical state experiences a sudden change in thermodynamic and transport properties. This results in the extraordinary variations of the heat transfer coefficients in the supercritical state, which are much different from those of single or two phase flows. Algebraic second moment closure which can include the effects of large thermophysical property variations of carbon dioxide and of buoyancy is employed to model the Reynolds stresses and turbulent heat fluxes in the governing equations. The previous correlations for the turbulent heat transfer coefficient for the supercritical carbon dioxide flows couldn't reflect the buoyancy effect. The present results are used to establish a new heat transfer coefficient correlation including the effects of large thermophysical property variation and buoyancy on in-duct cooling process of supercritical carbon dioxide.
Due to rapid progress in the performance of high-end computers, numerical prediction of fluid flow and flow-induced sound is expected to become a vital tool for aero- and hydro- dynamic design of various flow-related products. This presentation focuses on the applications of large-scale numerical simulations to complex engineering problems with a particular emphasis placed on the low-speed flows. Flow field computations are based on a large eddy simulation that directly computes all active eddies in the flow and models only those eddies responsible for energy dissipations. The sound generated from low-speed turbulent flows are computed either by direct numerical simulation or by decoupled methods, according to whether or not the feedback effects of the generated sound onto the source flow field can be neglected. Several numerical examples are presented in order to elucidate the present status of such computational methods and discussion on the future prospects will also be given.

Turbulent unsteady flows in the entrance region of a square duct are investigated with a hot-wire anemometer system. The velocity waveforms the mean and turbulence components of the axial velocity and the entrance length are obtained as a major characteristics of the developing turbulent unsteady flows. An inviscid flow theory is presented to describe the developing axial mean velocity profiles. A good agreement is seen between the measured and theoretically predicted values. The propagation of turbulence generated near the entrance of the square duct is satisfactorily approximated by an empirical correlation of the propagation of turbulence proposed so far. The local turbulence intensi-ty is found to be a little smaller in the accelerating phase than in the decelerating phase. The entrance length is about 60 times as large the hydraulic diameter.
Numerical simulation is performed for stagnating turbulent flows of impinging and countercurrent jets by the Reynolds stress model(RSM). Results are compared with those of the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model and available data to assess the flow characteristics and turbulence modes. Three variants of the RSM tested are those of Gibson and Launder(GL), Craft and Launder(GL-CL) and Speziale, Sarkar and Gatski(SSG). As well known, the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model overestimates turbulent kinetic energy near the wall significantly. Although the RSM is superior to the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model, it shows considerable difference according to how the redistributive pressure-strain term is modeled. Results of the RSM for countercurrent jets are improved with the modified coefficients for the dissipation rate, $C_{{\varepsilon}1}\;and\;C_{{\varepsilon}2}$ suggested by Champion and Libby. The performance of the three variants of the RSM model for stagnating flows are assessed.

In the present study, velocity profile and wall shear stress distributions of developing turbulent oscillatory flows in an oscillator connected to straight duct located in exit region of a curved duct was investigated experimentally. The experimental study for air flows was conducted to measure axial velocity profiles, shear stress distributions by using the Laser Doppler Velocimetry(LDV) system with the data acquisition and processing system of Rotating Machinery Resolver(R.M.R) and PHASE software. The results obtained from experimental studies are summarized as follows. The critical Reynolds number for a change from transitional oscillatory flow to turbulent flow was about 7500, in the 60region of dimensionless axial position which was considered as a fully developed flow region. The turbulent oscillatory flow, velocity profiles of the inflow period in the entrance region were gradually developed, but those of the outflow period were not changed nearly. Velocity profiles of inflow and outflow were shown as a symmetric form in a fully developed flow region. The wall shear stress distributions of turbulent oscillatory flow increase rapidly as the flow proceeds to downstream and flow was in good agreement with the theoretically.

In the present study, flow characteristics of turbulent oscillatory flows in the exit region connected to the square-sectional $180^{\circ}$curved duct was investigated experimentally. The experimental study for air flows was conducted to measure velocity profiles, shear stress distributions by using the Laser Doppler Velocimetry(L.D.V) system with the data acquisition and processing system of Rotating Machinery Resolver(R.M.R) and PHASE software. The results obtained from the experimentation were summarized as follows : The critical Reynolds number for a change from transitional oscillatory flow to turbulent oscillatory flow was about 75,000 in the 90 region of dimensionless axial position (x/Dh) which was considered as a fully developed flow region. In the turbulent oscillatory flow, velocity profiles of the inflow period in the entrance region were gradually developed, but those of the outflow period were not changed nearly. Shear stress distributions of turbulent oscillatory flow was gradually increased as the flow proceeds to downstream.

In the present study, the flow characteristics of developing turbulent flows are investigated at the exit region of a square cross-sectional 180" curved duct with dimensions of 40mm$\times$40mm$\times$4000mm (height $\times$ width $\times$length). Smoke particles produced from mosquito coils were used as seed particles for the LDV measurement. Experiments were carried out to measure axial velocity profiles, shear stress distributions and entrance lengths by using an LDV system and Rotating Machinery Resolver RMR with PHASE software. Experimental results clearly show that the time-averaged Reynolds number does not affect oscillatory flow characteristics because the turbulent components tend to balance the oscillatory components in the fully developed flow region. Also, the velocity profiles are in good agreement with 1/7power law such as the results of steady turbulent flows. The turbulent intensity linearly increases along the walls and is slightly higher, especially in the period of deceleration. On the other hand, the LDV measurements show that shear stress values in slightly higher in the period of deceleration due to the flow characteristics in the exit region. The entrance length where flows become stable appears at the point that is 40 times the length of hydraulic diameter.eter.
The present paper deals with the numerical simulation for the spray characteristics with swirling turbulent flows and dilution flows from swirl injectors in a simplified can type of gas turbine combustor. The main objective is to investigate the characteristics of swirling turbulent flows with dilution flows and to provide the qualitative results for the spray characteristics such as the droplet distribution and Sauter Mean Diameter(SMD). The gas-phase equations based on Eulerian approach were discretized by Finite Volume Method, together with SIMPLE algorithm and the Reynolds -Stress-Model. The liquid-phase equations based on Lagrangian method were used to predict the droplet behavior. The results of preliminary test are generally in good agreement with experimental data, and show that the anisotropy exists in the primary zone due to swirl velocity and injected air from primary injector, and then gradually decays due to turbulent mixing and consequently near-isotropy occurs in the region between primary and dilution zones. For the spray characteristics, it is indicated that the swirling flows of primary jet region increase the droplet atomization. In addition, it is showed that the swirling flows at the inlet region lead the air-fuel mixture to be distributed near the igniter and can significantly affect the spray behavior in the primary jet region.
The turbulent mixing rate is a very important variable in the thermal-hydraulic design of nuclear reactors. In this study, the turbulent mixing rate the fluid flows through rod bundles is estimated with the scale analysis on the flow pulsation phenomenon. Based upon the assumption that the turbulent mixing is composed of molecular motion, isotropic turbulent motion (turbulent motion without the flow pulsation), and How pulsation, the scale relation for the mixing is derived as a function of P/D, Re, and Pr. The derived scale relation is compared with published experimental results and shows good agreements. Since the scale relation is applicable to various Prandtl number fluid flows, it is expected to be useful for the thermal-hydraulic analysis of liquid metal coolant reactors as well as of moderate Prandtl number coolant reactors.
