  • Because of good performance of heat transfer characteristics, impinging jets are widely used in many industries for cooling or heating. And the present num erical studies attempt to show the effects of impinging jet. This paper considers the application of the turbulent models to impinging jet flow with pulsed inlet. It is assumed two-dimensional turbulent flows. The jet Reynolds num ber is set at 23,000 and the distance from the exit of the nozzle to the plate is 3 times larger than the diam eter of the nozzle. The influence of the Strouhal num ber(pulsation frequency) on Nusselt number at the impinging region is investigated. Strouhal numbers are ranged 0.0 to 0.5 and the forcing amplitudes are 1%,5%,9% of mean inlet velocity. In this study, the Nusselt number at the impinging region is sensitive to the pulsation frequency. Heat transfer coefficient strongly increase at Strouhal num ber of 0.4.

  • To overcome weak poinks of the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model when applied to complex turbulent flows, various modified models were proposed. But their effects are confined to special flow fields. They have still some problems. Recently, an anisotropic k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model was also proposed to solve the drawback of the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. This study is concentrated on the evaluation of the anisotropic k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model by the analysis of axisymmetric swirling turbulent flow. Results show that the anisotropic k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model has scarecely the fundamentally physical mechanism of predicting the swirling structure of flow.

  • This paper represents numerical computations of the interaction between the longitudinal vortex and a flat plate 3-D turbulent boundary layer. In the present study, the main interest is in the behavior of longitudinal vortices introduced in turbulent boundary layers. The flow field behind vortex generator is modeled by the information that is available from studies on the delta winglet. Also, the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stoke equations for three-dimensional turbulent flows, together with a two-layer turbulence model to resolve the near-wall flow, is solved by the method of pseudo compressibility. The present results show that the boundary layer is thinned in the regions where the secondary flow is directed toward the wall and thickened where it is directed away from the wall, and have a good agreement with the experimental data.

  • The conditional moment closure(CMC) model has been implemented in context with the unstructured-grid finite-volume method which efficiently handle the physically and geometrically complex turbulent reacting flows. The validation cases include a turbulent nonpremixed CO/$H_2$/$N_2$ Jet flame and a turbulent nonpremixed $H_2$/CO flame stabilized on an axisymmetric bluff-body burner. In terms of mean flame field, minor species and NO formation, numerical results has the overall agreement with expermental data. The detailed discussion has been made for the turbulence-chemistry interaction and NOx formation characteristics as well as the comparative performance for CMC and flamelet model.

  • The effect of curvature, rotation, variable cross-section can make very complex flow pattern in turbo-machinery such as Pumps, compressors, turbines, In this study of turbulent flow characteristics rotating $90^{\circ}$ curved duct under a Plane rate of strain condition is computationally analyzed. The objective of this study is to understand the complex turbulent flow phenomena in turbo-machinery passage by analyzing the modeled rotating $90^{\circ}$ curved duct flow. RSM(Reynolds Stress Model) was employed for the turbulence modeling of Reynolds stress in momentum equations proposed by Shin(1995). The three dimensional computational code which adopts RSM for trubulence modeling was newly developed for the generalized curvilinear coordinate.

  • Experimental and computational studies were carried out to confirm the turbulent enhancement of the cooling system of nuclear reactor by large scale vortex generation in nuclear fuel bundle. The large scale vortex motions were generated by rearranging the inclination angles of mixing vanes to the coordinate directions. Axial development of mean and turbulent velocities in the subchannels were measured by the 2-color LDV system. Eddy diffusivity heat flux model and $k-varepsilon$ model were employed to analyze the turbulent heat and fluid flows in the subchannel. The turbulence generated by split mixing vanes has small length scales so that they maintain only about $10 D_H$ after the spacer grid. On the other hand, the turbulences generated by the large scale vortex continue more and remain up to $25 D_H$after the spacer gird.

  • Animation understanding and time-resolved analysis of the wake characteristic of 2-D sharp plane flows were executed by applying the multi-vision PIV to a sharp plane(three angle of attacks : $15^{\circ}, \; 30^{\circ}, \; 45^{\circ}$) submerged within a circulating water channel($Re = 2{\times}10^4$). The macroscopic shedding patterns were discussed in terms of instantaneous velocity, vorticity, velocity profile, kinetic energy, turbulent intensity, frequency analysis. Particularly, the time-averaged distribution of turbulent intensity in each experimental cases revealed separate island-like small regions magnitude of turbulent intensity was always strengthened.

  • Turbulent flow and heat transfer to water at supercritical pressure flowing in vertical pipes is investigated using direct numerical simulation (DNS). A conservative space-time discretization scheme for variable-density flows at low Mach numbers is adopted in the present study to treat steep variations of fluid properties at supercritical pressure just above the thermodynamic critical point. The fluid properties at these conditions are obtained using PROPATH and used in the form of tables in the simulations. The buoyancy influence induced by strong variation of density across the pseudo-critical temperature proved to play an important role in turbulent flow and heat transfer at supercritical state. Depending on the degree of buoyancy influence, turbulent heat transfer may be enhanced or significantly deteriorated, resulting in local hot spots along the heated surface.

  • Experimental studies are made of the characteristics of turbulent flow around the propeller shaft in Cavitation Tunnel using a 2-component LDV system. First the flow uniformity and turbulence levels at the test section are measured. The turbulent boundary layer around the propelle shaft and the wakes behind the propeller shaft are also measured. It is shown that the former represents the general turbulent boundary layer around the propeller shaft but the latter represents the complicated flows behind it.

  • An experimental study has been carried out as a basic research for development of the friction drag reduction technology for ships by polymer injection. Experimental apparatus and procedures have been devised and prepared to measure the changes of the wall friction with injection of a polymer solution and basic experimental data on the friction drag reduction are obtained for a turbulent fiat-plate boundary layer and fully-developed channel flows. Variations of the friction drag reduction with some important parameters of polymer injection, such as the concentration of polymer solution, its injection flow rate and the measuring position downstream from the injection slot, are also investigated. Important experimental data and results obtained in the present study are presented. The amount of friction drag reduction up to 50% is observed.
