This study describes aerodynamic characteristics for the HAWT (Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine) rotor blade using general CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) code. The boundary conditions for analysis are validated with the experimental result by the NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory)/NASA Ames wind tunnel test for S809 airfoil. In the case of wind turbine rotor blade, complex phenomena are appeared such as flow separation and re-attachment. Those are handled by using a commercial flow analysis tool. The 2-equation k-$\omega$ SST turbulence model and transition model appear to be well suited for the prediction. The 3-dimensional phenomena in the HAWT rotor blade is simulated by a commercial 3-D aerodynamic analysis tool. Tip vortex geometry and Radial direction flows along the blade are checked by the analysis.
For a building with a dominant windward wall opening, the wind-induced internal pressure response can be described by a second-order non-linear differential equation. However, there are two ill-defined parameters in the governing equation: the inertial coefficient $C_I$ and the loss coefficient $C_L$. Lack of knowledge of these two parameters restricts the practical use of the governing equation. This study was primarily focused on finding an accurate reference value for $C_I$, and the paper presents a systematic investigation of the factors influencing the inertial coefficient for a wind-tunnel model building including: opening configuration and location, wind speed and direction, approaching flow turbulence, the model material, and the installation method. A numerical model was used to simulate the volume deformation under internal pressure, and to predict the bulk modulus of an experimental model. In considering the structural flexibility, an alternative approach was proposed to ensure accurate internal volume distortions, so that similarity of internal pressure responses between model-scale and full-scale building was maintained. The research showed 0.8 to be a reasonable standard value for the inertial coefficient.

This present paper leads to investigation of blade-fluid interactions of cambered blade H-Darrieus rotor having EN0005 airfoil blades using comprehensive Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis to understand its performance in low wind streams. For several blade azimuthal angle positions, the effects of three different low wind speeds are studied regarding their influence on the blade-fluid interactions of the EN0005 blade rotor. In the prevailing studies by various researchers, such CFD analysis of H-Darrieus rotors are very less, hence it is needed to improve their steady-state performance in low wind velocities. Such a study is also important to obtain important performance insights of such thin cambered blade rotor in its complete rotational cycle. It has been seen that the vortex generated at the suction side of the EN0005 blade rolls back to its leading edge due to the camber of the blade and thus a peak velocity occurs near to the nose position of this blade at its leading edge, which leads to peak performance of this rotor. Again, in the returning phase of the blade, a secondary recirculating vortex is generated that acts on the pressure side of EN0005 blade rotor that increases the performance of this cambered EN0005 blade rotor in its downstream position as well. Here, the aerodynamic performances have been compared considering Standard k-ε and SST k-ω models to check the better suited turbulence model for the cambered EN0005 blade H-Darrieus rotor in low tip speed ratios.
Wind measurements were made on the Canton Tower at a height of 461 m above ground during the Typhoon Vincente, the wind-induced accelerations and displacements of the tower were recorded as well. Comparisons of measured wind parameters at upper level of atmospheric boundary layer with those adopted in wind tunnel testing were presented. The measured turbulence intensity can be smaller than the design value, indicating that the wind tunnel testing may underestimate the crosswind structural responses for certain lock-in velocity range of vortex shedding. Analyses of peak factors and power spectral density for acceleration response shows that the crosswind responses are a combination of gust-induced buffeting and vortex-induced vibrations in the certain range of wind directions. The identified modal frequencies and mode shapes from acceleration data are found to be in good agreement with existing experimental results and the prediction from the finite element model. The damping ratios increase with amplitude of vibration or equivalently wind velocity which may be attributed to aerodynamic damping. In addition, the natural frequencies determined from the measured displacement are very close to those determined from the acceleration data for the first two modes. Finally, the relation between displacement responses and wind speed/direction was investigated.

The purposes of this study are to evaluate the power performance through CFD analysis and structural integrity through uni-directional FSI analysis in aerodynamic design and structure design of wind turbine blade. The blade was designed to generate the power of 2MW under the rated wind speed of 11 m/s, consisting of NACA 6 series, DU series and FFA series airfoil. The inside section of the blade was designed into D-spar structure and circular stiffener was placed to reinforce the structural strength in the part of hub. CFD analysis with the application of transitional turbulence model was performed to evaluate the power performance of blade according to the change of TSR and 2.024MW resulted under the condition of rated wind speed. TSR of 9 produced the maximum power coefficient and in this case, Cp was 0.494. This study applied uni-directional FSI analysis for more precise evaluation of structural integrity of blade, and the results of fiber failure, inter fiber failure and eigenvalue buckling analysis were evaluated, respectively. For the evaluation, Puck's failure criteria was applied and the result showed that fiber failure and inter fiber failure did not occur under every possible condition of the analysis. As a result, power performance and structural integrity of 2 MW blade designed in this study turned out to satisfy the initial design goals.
Wind-induced fluctuating internal pressures in a building with a dominant opening can be described by a second-order non-linear differential equation. However, the accuracy and efficiency of the governing equation in predicting internal pressure fluctuations depend upon two ill-defined parameters: inertial coefficient $C_I$ and loss coefficient $C_L$, since $C_I$ determines the un-damped oscillation frequency of an air slug at the opening, while $C_L$ controls the decay ratio of the fluctuating internal pressure. This study particularly focused on the value of loss coefficient and its influence factors including: opening configuration and location, internal volumes, as well as wind speed and approaching flow turbulence. A simplified formula was presented to predict loss coefficient, therefore an approximate relationship between the standard deviation of internal and external pressures can be estimated using Vickery's approach. The study shows that the loss coefficient governs the peak response of the internal pressure spectrum which, in turn, will directly influence the standard deviation of the fluctuating internal pressure. The approaching flow characteristic and opening location have a remarkable effect on the parameter $C_L$.
In the current code design, the use of a uniform internal pressure coefficient of cooling towers as internal suction cannot reflect the 3D characteristics of flow field inside the tower body with different ventilation rate of shutters. Moreover, extreme weather such as heavy rain also has a direct impact on aerodynamic force on the internal surface and changes the turbulence effect of pulsating wind. In this study, the world's tallest cooling tower under construction, which stands 210m, is taken as the research object. The algorithm for two-way coupling between wind and rain is adopted. Simulation of wind field and raindrops is performed iteratively using continuous phase and discrete phase models, respectively, under the general principles of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Firstly, the rule of influence of 9 combinations of wind speed and rainfall intensity on the volume of wind-driven rain, additional action force of raindrops and equivalent internal pressure coefficient of the tower body is analyzed. The combination of wind velocity and rainfall intensity that is most unfavorable to the cooling tower in terms of distribution of internal pressure coefficient is identified. On this basis, the wind/rain loads, distribution of aerodynamic force and working mechanism of internal pressures of the cooling tower under the most unfavorable working condition are compared between the four ventilation rates of shutters (0%, 15%, 30% and 100%). The results show that the amount of raindrops captured by the internal surface of the tower decreases as the wind velocity increases, and increases along with the rainfall intensity and ventilation rate of the shutters. The maximum value of rain-induced pressure coefficient is 0.013. The research findings lay the basis for determining the precise values of internal surface loads of cooling tower under extreme weather conditions.
The short circuit ratio (SCR) of a given grid is able to show the stability of the system in the case of unwanted elements, such as wind turbulence. This paper presents the simulation of a model of the doubly fed induction generator in the simulation software PSCAD/EMTDC. This model has been used to study flicker during continuous operation and the effect of SCR and grid impedance angle on flicker emission. Simulation results show that compensation of the stator reactive power is an effective method to considerably reduce the flicker levels, irrespective of the grid conditions.

The unexpected wind over the Mt. Hwawang on 9 February 2009 was deadly when many spectators were watching a traditional event to burn dried grasses and the fire went out of control due to the wind. We analyzed the fatal wind based on wind flow simulations over a digitized complex terrain of the mountain with a localized heating area using a three dimensional computational fluid dynamics model, CFD_NIMR_SNU (Computational Fluid Dynamics_National Institute of Meteorological Research_Seoul National University). Three levels of fire intensity were simulated: no fire, $300^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$ of surface temperature at the site on fire. The surface heat accelerated vertical wind speed by as much as $0.7\;m\;s^{-1}$ (for $300^{\circ}C$) and $1.1\;m\;s^{-1}$ (for $600^{\circ}C$) at the center of the fire. Turbulent kinetic energy was increased by the heat itself and by the increased mechanical force, which in turn was generated by the thermal convection. The heating together with the complex terrain and strong boundary wind induced the unexpected high wind conditions with turbulence at the mountain. The CFD_NIMR_SNU model provided valuable analysis data to understand the consequences of the fatal mountain fire. It is suggested that the place of fire was calm at the time of the fire setting due to the elevated terrain of the windward side. The suppression of wind was easily reversed when there was fire, which caused updraft of hot air by the fire and the strong boundary wind. The strong boundary wind in conjunction with the fire event caused the strong turbulence, resulting in many fire casualties. The model can be utilized in turbulence forecasting over a small area due to surface fire in conjunction with a mesoscale weather model to help fire prevention at the field.

Skin frictional drag reduction efficiency of "stiff" compliant coating was investigated in a wind tunnel experiment. Flat plate compliant coating inserts were installed in a wind tunnel and the measurements of skin frictional drag and velocity field were carried out. The compliant coatings with varying viscoelastic properties had been prepared using different composition. In order to optimize the coating thickness, the most important design parameter, the dynamic viscoelastic properties had been determined experimentally. The aging of the materials (variation of their properties) during half a year was documented as well. A design procedure proposed by Kulik et al. (2008) was applied to get an optimal value for the coating thickness. Along with the drag measurement using the strain balance, velocity and pressure were measured for different coatings. The compliant coatings with the thickness h = 7mm achieved 4~5% drag reduction within a velocity range 30~40 m/s. The drag reduction mechanism of the attenuation of turbulence velocity fluctuations due to the compliant coating was demonstrated. It is envisioned that larger drag reduction effect is obtainable at higher flow velocities for high speed trains and subsonic aircrafts.
