Effect of Gas Bypass at Turbine Inlet on Design of a Pressurized Solid Oxide Fuel Cell / Gas Turbine Hybrid System (가압형 고체산화물 연료전지 / 가스터빈 하이브리드 시스템 설계에서 터빈입구 바이패스의 효과)

  • Hybrid power generation systems combining a solid oxide fuel cell and a gas turbine is promising due to their high efficiency. In the pressurized hybrid system, the operating condition of the gas turbine may play a critical role in designing the hybrid system. In particular, prevention of surge of the compressor can be a critical issue. The existence of fuel cell between the compressor and the turbine may cause an additional pressure loss and thus compressor operating points tend to approach the surge if the original turbine inlet temperature is pursued. In this study, bypassing some of the turbine inlet gas directly to the turbine exit side is simulated. Its effects on suppressing the surge problem and change in performance characteristics are discussed.

  • This paper aims to compare the use of Centrifugal Turbine and Tesla Turbine in an application of Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) Machine using Isopentane as working fluid expanding. The working fluid has boiling point below boiling water and works in low-temperature sources between $80-120^{\circ}C$ which can be produced from waste heat, solar-thermal energy and geothermal energy etc. The experiment on ORC machine reveals that the suitability of high pressure pump for working fluid has result on the efficiency of work. In addition, Thermodynamics theory on P-h diagram also presented the effect of heat sources' temperature and flow rate on any work. Thus, the study and design on ORC machine has to concern mainly on pressure pump, flow rate and optimized temperature. Result experiment and calculate ORC Machine using centrifugal Turbine efficiency better than Tesla turbine 30% but Tesla Turbine is cheaper and easily structure. Further study on the machine can be developed throughout the county due to its low cost and efficiency.

Performance Characteristics of a Partially Admitted Small Mixed-Type Turbine (부분분사에서 작동하는 소형 사류형 터빈에서의 성능특성에 관한 연구)

  • A mixed-type turbine was adopted and the rotor outer diameter was 108 mm. Turbine rotors were designed to the axial-type blade because the turbine operated at a low partial admission rate of 1.7-2.0% with two stages. Performance characteristics were studied when the spouting from the nozzle was toward radially inward or outward direction. Additionally, the effect at each stage of the rotor was measured. For comparing with each turbine performance, properties were measured based on various rotational speeds. Measured net specific torque was used to compare with the turbine system performance. On the mixed-type turbine, better performance was obtained when the operating air spouted toward radially inward direction. The specific torque was increased by 7.8% from using the second stage although its effect depended on the rotational speed.

  • Recently, the cross flow turbine attracts more and more attention for its good performance over a large operating regime at off design point. This study adopts a very low head cross flow turbine that has barely been studied before, and investigates the effect of air layer on the performance of the cross flow turbine. As open duct is applied in this study and free surface model is used between the air layer and water, an engineering definition of efficiency, instead of traditional definition of efficiency, is used. As torque at the runner fluctuates up and down at a reasonable limit, statistical method is used. Pressure and water volume fraction contours are shown to present the characteristics of air-water flow. With constant air suction in the runner chamber, the water level gradually drops below the runner and efficiency of the turbine can be raised by 10 percent. All considered, the effect of air layer on the performance of turbine is considerable.

  • For a hydro turbine electricity generation system in river or bay, a venturi system could be applied to accelerate flow speed at the inlet of the turbine system in a flow field. In this study, a steady flow simulation was conducted to understand the effect of venturi system on the acceleration of current speed at the inlet of a hydro turbine system. According to the continuity equation, the flow speed is inversely proportional to the cross-section area in a conduit flow; however, it would be different in an open region because the venturi system would be an obstruction in the flow region. As the throat area is 1/5 of the inlet area of the venturi, the flow velocity is accelerated up to 2.1 times of the inlet velocity. It is understood that the venturi system placed in an open flow region gives resistance to the upcoming flow and disperses the flow energy around the venturi system. The result of the study should be very important information for an optimum design of a hydro turbine electricity generation system.

  • This paper describes a methodology and results for the analysis of a small steam injected gas turbine cogeneration system. A performance analysis program for the gas turbine engine is utilized with modifications required for the model of steam injection and the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). The object of simulation is a simple cycle gas turbine engine under development which adopts a centrifugal compressor. The analysis is based on the off-design operation of the gas turbine and the compressor performance map is utilized. Analyses are carried out with the injection ratio as the main parameter. The effect of steam injection on the power and efficiency of gas turbine and cogeneration capacity is investigated. Also presented is the variation in the main operating parameters inside the HRSG. Remarkable reduction in NOx generation by steam injection is confirmed. In addition, it is observed that for the 100% power operation the temperature of the cooled first nozzle blade decreases by 100.deg. C at full steam injection, which seems to have a favorable effect on the engine life time.

  • The present study developed a numerical simulation tool for the coupled dynamic analysis of multiple turbines on a single floater (or Multiple Unit Floating Offshore Wind Turbine (MUFOWT)) in the time domain, considering the multiple-turbine aero-blade-tower dynamics and control, mooring dynamics, and platform motions. The numerical tool developed in this study was designed based on and extended from the single-turbine analysis tool FAST to make it suitable for multiple turbines. For the hydrodynamic loadings of floating platform and mooring-line dynamics, the CHARM3D program developed by the authors was incorporated. Thus, the coupled dynamic behavior of a floating base with multiple turbines and mooring lines can be simulated in the time domain. To investigate the effect of asymmetric aerodynamic loading on the global performance and mooring line tensions of the MUFOWT, one turbine failure case with a fully feathered blade pitch angle was simulated and checked. The aerodynamic interference between adjacent turbines, including the wake effect, was not considered in this study to more clearly demonstrate the influence of the asymmetric aerodynamic loading on the MUFOWT. The analysis shows that the unbalanced aerodynamic loading from one turbine in MUFOWT may induce appreciable changes in the performance of the floating platform and mooring system.

Effect of Air Layer on the Performance of an Open Ducted Cross Flow Turbine

  • Recently, the cross flow turbines attract more attention for their good performance over a large operating regime at off design point. This study employs a very low head cross flow turbine, which has open inlet duct and has barely been studied before, to investigate the performance of the cross flow turbine with air suction from the rear part of the runner. Unlike conventional cross flow turbines, a draft tube is attached to the outlet of runner to improve the turbine performance. Water level and pressure in the draft tube are monitored to investigate the influence of air suction. Torque at local blade passage of three parts of runner is examined in detail under the conditions of different air suction. Consequently, it is found that with proper air suction in the runner chamber, the water level in the draft tube gradually drops to Stage 2 of the runner and the efficiency of the turbine can be raised by 10%. Overall, the effect of air-layer on the performance of the turbine is considerable.

  • As the waterpower generation plant, the subject of this Study, is a facility that produces plenty of electricity corresponds to $196{\sim}240GWh$ annually, and in its generation process it creates a loud noise when the turbine related to the hydraulic turbine dynamo revolves, and since such loud noise must be transmitted to the dynamo room and amplified, it is effecting a lot of influences to the adjacent office and space. In such viewpoint, this Research, based on the soundproof measure presented at the preceding research, has attempted to evaluate about the effect of noise-reduction countermeasure against the hydraulic turbine dynamo using Auralizational Technique through Psycho-Acoustics Experiment. It deems that such result could be applied hereafter as the useful material when setting up a soundproof countermeasure for the hydraulic turbine dynamo room in dam.
