Recently construction of large sewer tunnels used also as underground sluiceways/storages is increasing in order to prevent urban inundation, untreated sewage flow into rivers from combined sewer overflows and consequential river pollution due to climate change. Most of these large sewer tunnels are constructed with concrete and the concrete lining should be protected from corrosion caused by hydrogen sulfide($H_2S$). This paper introduced popular concrete corrosion protection methods for large sewer tunnels with 100-plus years of life cycle, and pros and cons of each corrosion protection methods were described by giving specific examples. However, it is difficult to objectively assess corrosion protection alternatives because of insufficient track record of corrosion protection methods applied to large sewer tunnels. In this paper, the evaluation process for selecting a corrosion protection alternative was introduced for large sewer tunnels using a case study.
Purpose: The objective of this study was to improve the tunnel maintenance and monitoring technology by establishing the maintenance, management, and monitoring standards for shield and TBM tunnels, which had been applied more in recent years. Method: This study comprehensively analyzed and compared the data and model simulations of Seoul Subway Lines 7 and 9 and Bundang Line, shield and TBM tunnels in South Korea, tunnels in France and Japan, and Channel Tunnel in the UK. Result: This study set maintenance and monitoring standards when there was no design estimate based on numerical analyses such as section design and section analysis regarding the maintenance and monitoring section of shield and TBM tunnels. Conclusion: It is necessary to determine safety by comprehensively considering not only each monitoring item but also the changing trend and correlation of all items and compensation of the tunnel.

This paper describes laboratory experiments modelling multiple tunnel construction in soft ground. A series of small-scale model tests have been conducted at approximately 1/50 scale in order to investigate the behaviours of existing tunnels in response to the construction of new tunnels in close proximity. The model tunnels were constructed in a consolidated Speswhite Kaolin clay using a tunnelling device involving an auger type cutter within a shield. Strain gauges and LVDTs were used for instrumenting the existing tunnels. The findings obtained from the analyses of these tests were compared to the field measurements involving the reconstruction of the Northern Line London Underground Ltd. tunnels at Old street, United Kingdom. The results were also compared to the ground movement measurements obtained from a separate set of tests undertaken using the same apparatus and experimental procedures.

In this study, the staged seismic performance evaluations were conducted to the 91 high speed railway tunnels in use for checking whether to comply with the recent design criteria or not. In addition, the seismic fragility functions of the tunnels were developed to allow the probabilistic risk assessment. The results of the staged seismic performance evaluations which consist of a preliminary assessment and a detailed assessment, show that the tunnels comply with the recent design criteria. With reference to the results of previous studies, a form of the proposed seismic fragility functions was set as a log-normal distribution by PGA, and the parameters of the functions were determined by using the probability of damage for the design PGA level. The seismic fragility functions were developed for each types (Cut & Cover, NATM) of tunnels. The seismic fragility functions from this study and the existing research results (FEMA, 2004) were compared to evaluate the seismic performance level of the tunnels, as a result the tunnels of this study were relatively superior to the ASSM tunnels on the seismic performance.

This study focused on shielding through inflatable structure in the event of sudden water inflow into the submerged floating tunnels. Currently, there is a lack of measures to deal with unexpected water in tunnels in Korea. Although water treatment facilities such as waterproofing and floodgates in tunnels are installed, there are limitations to the sudden inflow of large amounts of seawater or underground water. Also, floodgates cannot respond quickly to sudden damage due to slow blocking time. Accordingly, a study was conducted on the shielding rate and axial movement distance for inflatable structure. The results of the reduced model experiment confirmed that the number of inflatable structure and internal pneumatic pressure influence on the shielding rate. As the number of inflatable structure increased from one to two, the shielding rate increased by about 35 up to 40 percent. It was also confirmed that the shielding rate increased by about 4 percent as the internal pneumatic pressure increased from 0.2 bar to 0.3 bar. If we verify and further develop the results identified in this study through a real-size experiment, it will be able to be used as an effective waterproof measure for sudden water inflow into the undersea tunnels or underwater tunnels.
We explicitly derive diagrams representing (1,1)-decompositions of rational pretzel knots $K_{\beta}=M((-2,\;1),\;(3,\;1),\;({\mid}6{\beta}+1{\mid},{\beta}))$ from four unknotting tunnels for ${\beta}=1,\;-2$ and 2.
This paper presents an experimental study on the radio propagation characteristics in subway tunnel at 18GHz frequency band which has been assigned to video transmission between train and wayside. The radio propagation tests are carried out in the subway tunnel of Seoul Metro using the antenna and communication devices of the prototype video transmission system. The measurement results show that 18GHz radio propagation in subway tunnel has smaller path loss than that of general outdoor radio environment. It is also cleared that the arch-type tunnels have smaller radio propagation losses than rectangular tunnels, and single track tunnels have smaller pass loss than double track tunnels. From the measurements, the radio propagation coverage is worked out as 520 meters. The curved tunnels which cannot have LOS communication between transmitter and receiver have large pass losses and fluctuation profile along distance. The radio propagation coverage along curved tunnels is worked out as 300 meters. These investigation results can be used to design the 18GHz radio transmission system for subway tunnel by providing the optimized wayside transmitter locations and handover algorithm customized to the radio propagation characteristics in subway tunnels.
In Korea, in general, separation distance between existing parallel tunnels was set at two to five times as distant as the diameter of the tunnels according to ground conditions. Recently, however, actual applicability of closely spaced parallel tunnels whose distance between tunnel centers was shorter than the diameter has increased due to environmental damages resulting from massive cutting, restriction in purchase of required land, and maintenance of linear continuity. In particular, when the pillar width of tunnel decreases, the safety of pillars affects behaviors of the tunnel and therefore the need for diverse relevant studies has emerged. However, research so far has been largely confined to analysis of behavior characteristics of pillars, or parameters affecting design, and actually applicable and quantitative data have not been presented. Accordingly, in order to present a stability evaluation method which may maximally reflect construction conditions of spots, this study reflected topographical and stratigraphic characteristics of the portal part with the highest closeness between the tunnels, simulated multi-layer conditions with rock mass and complete weathering, and assessed the degree of effect the stability of pillars had on the entire tunnels through numerical analysis according to changes in pillar width by ground strength. This study also presented composite analysis result on ground surface settlement rates, interference volume rates, and average strength to stress and a formula, which may be applicable to actual work, to evaluate safety rates of closely spaced parallel tunnel pillars and minimum pillar width by ground strength based on failure criteria by Hoek-Brown (1980).
Stability of twin tunnels depends on the pillar width and the ground condition. In this study, large scale model tests were conducted for investigating the influence of the pillar width of twin tunnels on their behavior in the regular horizontal jointed rock mass. Jointed rocks was composed of concrete blocks. Pillar width of twin tunnels varied in 0.29D, 0.59D, 0.88D and 1.18D, where D is the tunnel width. During the test, pillar stress, lining stress, tunnel distortion, and ground displacement were measured. Lateral earth pressure coefficient was kept in a constant value 1.0. As a result, it was found that the pillar stress and the displacement of the ground and tunnel were increased by decreasing pillar width. The maximum displacement rate was measured just after the upper excavation in each construction sequence. And the maximum influence position was the right shoulder of the preceeding tunnel at the pillar side. It was also found that for the stability assessment the inner displacement was more critical than the crown displacement. The influence zone was formed at the pillar width 0.59D~0.88D that was smaller than 0.8D~2.0D, which was proposed by experience for a good ground condition. And it would be concluded that horizontal joints could also influence on the stability of the twin tunnels.

A quantitative risk assessment method for quantitatively evaluating the fire risk in designing a road tunnel disaster prevention facilities has been introduced to evaluate the appropriateness of a disaster prevention facility in a large tunnel through which all vehicle types pass. However, since the quantitative risk assessment method of the developed can be applied only to the large sectional area tunnels (large tunnels), it is necessary to develop a quantitative risk assessment method for road tunnels passing only small cars which has recently been constructed or planned. In this study, fire accidents scenarios and quantitative risk assesment method for small road tunnels through small cars only which is based on the methods for existing road tunnels (large tunnels). And the risk according to the distance between cross passage is evaluated. As a result, in order to satisfy the societal risk assessment criteria, the distance of the appropriate distance between cross passages was estimated to be 200 m, and the effect of the ventilation system of the large port exhaust ventilation system was quantitatively analyzed by comparing the longitudinal ventilation system.
