The thermo-flow field in road tunnel is influenced by some facts such as piston effect of vehicle's move, operation of ventilation facilities, natural wind and buoyancy effect of fire plume. Among those, piston effect is one of primary causes for formation of air flow in road tunnel and has an effect on initial direction of smoke flow in tunnel fire. In this study to analyze the unsteady flow in the tunnel caused by the run of vehicle, the experimental study of vehicle-induced unsteady flow on a reduced-scale model tunnel is presented. While the three types of vehicle shape such as basic type of rectangular shape, diamond-head type and stair-tail type are changed, the pressure and air velocity variations with time are measured. The rising ratio of pressure and velocity are in order of "basic type of rectangular shape > stair-tail type > diamond-head type". The experimental results would be good data for development of a numerical method on the vehicle-induced unsteady tunnel flow.
In this study, the flow field and the recirculation phenomena are investigated numerically for the model around a tunnel entrance and exit. It turns out that the air entering to the tunnel entrance comes mostly from the upper region of the entrance implying that maintaining the air clear in that region is important for the inside-tunnel ventilation. We also found that the recirculation of the exhaust gas from the exit to the entrance has a maximum effect when the flow velocity at the exit is somewhat lower than that of the entrance.
Numerical simulations were carried out to analyze the flow characteristics of the wind tunnel. Flow field characteristics with velocity uniformity at the test sections are largely affected by inlet conditions of air flow rate and temperature. Axial average velocity of the flow field inside the test area was almost linearly decreased by 0.026% each 1m. The uniformity distributions of axial velocity showed the highest reduction rate of about 24% between nozzle outlets 1 ~ 2m. In addition, average velocity and the uniformity are increased with air temperature in the wind tunnel due to density variation. The results of this paper are expected to be useful for the basic design of wind tunnel and to be used for efficient design.

Flow phenomena such as the pressure transients Inside a high-speed railway tunnel and the Impulsive waves at the exit of the tunnel are closely associated with the characteristics of the entry compression wave, which is generated by a train entering the tunnel. Tunnel entrance hood may be an effective means for alleviating the Impulsive waves and pressure transients. The objective of the current work is to explore the effects of the train nose shape and the entrance hood on the characteristics of the entry compression wave. Numerical calculations using the method of characteristics were applied to one-dimensional, unsteady, compressible flow field with respect to high-speed railway/tunnel systems. Two types of the entrance hoods and various train nose shapes were employed to reveal their influences on the entry compression wave for a wide range of train speeds. The results showed that the entry compression wave length increases as the train nose becomes longer and the train speed becomes lower. The entry compression wave length in the tunnel with hood becomes longer than that of no hood. Maximum pressure gradient in the compression wavefront reduces by the entrance hood. The results of the current work provide useful data for the design of tunnel entrance hood.
To analyze the three-dimensional flow in tunnel caused by operation of jet fan, both experimental and computational studies have been conducted. The experimental analysis of tunnel flow induced by jet fan is conducted on a real-scale apparatus with jet fan and tunnel, and air velocity at the monitoring points is measured for variation of fan's RPM. The three-dimensional numerical analysis including tunnel and jet fan is carried out for the same geometric configuration as the experimental analysis. The experimental and computational results are compared to examine the applicability of the numerical method.

The three-dimensional unsteady compressible Euler equation solver with ALE, CFD code, PAM-FLOW based on FEM method has been applied to analyze the flow field around the high speed train which is entering into a channel. From the present study, the pressure and flow transients were calculated and analyzed. The generation of compression wave was observed ahead of train and the high pressure in the gap between the train and the tunnel was also found due to the blockage effects. It was found that abrupt fluctuation in pressure exists in the region from train nose to shoulder of train corresponding to 10% of total length of train during tunnel entry. Computed time history of aerodynamic forces of train during tunnel entry show that drag coefficient rapidly rises and saturates at about non-dimensional time 0.31. The total increase of drag coefficient before and after tunnel entry is about 1.1%. Transient profile of lift force shows similar pattern to drag coefficient except abrupt drop after saturation and lift force in the tunnel increases 0.08% more than that before tunnel entry.

In this study, comparative analysis on the back-layer phenomena in the tunnel-fire driven flow is performed using numerical simulation with LES and RANS. FDS(Fire Dynamics Simulator) code is employed to calculate the fire-driven turbulent flow for LES and Smartfire code is used for RANS. Hwang and Wargo's data of scaling tunnel fire experiment are employed to compare with the present numerical simulation. The modeled tunnel is 5.4m(L) ${\times}$ 0.4m(W) ${\times}$ 0.3m(H). Heat Release Rate (HRR) of fire is 3.3kW and ventilation-velocity is 0.33m/s in the main stream. The various grid-distributions are systematically tested with FDS code to analyze the effects of grid size. The LES method with FDS provides an improved back-layer flow behavior in comparison with the RANS (${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$) method by Smartfire. The FDS solvers, however, overpredict the velocity in the center region of flow which is caused by the defects in the tunnel-entrance turbulence strength and in the near-wall turbulent flow in FDS code.

This study examines the accuracy of large-eddy simulation (LES) to simulate the flow around a large irregular sloping complex terrain. Typically, real built up environments are surrounded by complex terrain geometries with many features. The complex terrain surrounding The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology campus was modelled and the flow over an uphill slope was simulated. The simulated results, including mean velocity profiles and turbulence intensities, were compared with the flow characteristics measured in a wind tunnel model test. Given the size of the domain and the corresponding constraints on the resolution of the simulation, the mean velocity components within the boundary layer flow, especially in the stream-wise direction were found to be reasonably well replicated by the LES. The turbulence intensity values were found to differ from the wind tunnel results in the building recirculation zones, mostly due to the constraints placed on spatial and temporal resolutions. Based on the validated mean velocity profile results, the flow-structure interactions around these buildings and the surrounding terrain were examined.
In this study CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis of the steady fire-driven fuid flow for the performance test of ventilation at railway tunnel between Heuksok and Nodeul Station from Seoul Metro 9 is performed. There were fans with exhaust and intake modes and each was installed at the middle and both ends of the tunnel. For this test, the pool fire source of methyl alcohol with 1.5MW and smoke generators were installed between the middle of tunnel and Heuksok Station. In this test, the smoke behavior from natural convection was observed for 10 minutes from the ignition of pool fire and then fans with intake-modes at both sides of Heuksok effect of fan-on with intake mode located in the opposite side of the tunnel nearby Heuksok Station on fire-driven fluid flow is studied on when the boundary conditions of fan-on at the tunnel between Heuksok and Nodeul Station are the same as test. FLUENT, a commercial CFD code, is used for this analysis.
The underground utility tunnels are important facility as a mainstay of country because of communication developments. The communication and electrical duct banks as well as various utility lines for urban life are installed in the underground utility tunnel systems. If a fire breaks out in this life-line tunnel, the function of the city will be discontinued and the huge damages are occurred. In order to improve the safety of life-line tunnel systems and the fire detection, the behaviors of the fire-induced smoke flow and temperature distribution are investigated. In this study we assumed that the fire is occurred at the contact or connection points of cable. Numerical calculations are carried out using different velocity of ventilation in utility tunnel. The fire source is modeled as a volumetric heat source. Three-dimensional flow and thermal characteristics in the underground tunnel are solved by means of FVM (Finite Volume Method) using SIMPLE algorithm and standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model for Reynolds stress terms. The numerical results of the fire-induced flow characteristics in an underground utility tunnel with different velocity of ventilation are graphically prepared and discussed.
