  • In recent years, as flood damage caused by heavy rains increased, the great-depth tunnel using urban underground space is emerging as a countermeasure of urban inundation. The great-depth tunnel is used to reduce urban inundation by using the underground space. The drainage efficiency of great-depth tunnel depends on the intake design, which leads to increase discharge into the underground space. The spiral intake and the tangential intake are commonly used for the inlet facility. The spiral intake creates a vortex flow along the drop shaft and reduces an energy of the flow by the wall friction. In the tangential intake, flow simply falls down into the drop shaft, and the design is simple to construct compared to the spiral intake. In the case of the spiral intake, the water level at the drop shaft entrance is risen due to the chocking induced by the flowrate increase. The drainage efficiency of the tangential intake decreases because the flow is not sufficiently accelerated under low flow conditions. Therefore, to compensate disadvantages of the previously suggested intake design, the multi-stage intake was developed which can stably withdraw water even under a low flow rate below the design flow rate. The hydraulic characteristics in the multi-stage intake were analyzed by changing the flow rate to compare the drainage performance according to the intake design. From the measurements, the drainage efficiency was improved in both the low and high flow rate conditions when the multi-stage inlet was employed.

  • As a result of the recent revision of the 'Guideline for Installation and Management of Fire Prevention Facility in Road Tunnels', the thermal buoyancy has to be taken into account when calculating the capacity of jet fans for smoke control in tunnel fires. However, there is no detailed methodologies for considering thermal buoyancy, so further study is needed. In this study, the thermal buoyancy in the tunnel is calculated by 3-D numerical simulation to consider the thermal buoyancy in case of fire in tunnels, and the relationship between heat buoyancy and vehicle drag, And the method of calculating the capacity of the jet fan for smoke control in tunnels. According to the analysis results, heat buoyancy acts as a resistance force in the case of a down-slope tunnel, and the pressure rise of jet fan for smoke control is not simply determined by the value of heat buoyancy at the entrance of the tunnel and the value of the vehicle drag at the exit. And it is analyzed that it is necessary to carry out a comprehensive review according to the location of the fire vehicle in tunnels.

  • The studies were carried out to process one cycle for a day to the large section tunnel lining concrete. Climatic characteristics of the tunnel inside are changed, when the temperature of the concrete placement is low, the mold remove time is increased that the heat of hydration speed be delayed because affects the strength development, to compensate for this, after installing the curing sheet on both sides of the steel form and installation of tunnel entrance, when it comes to providing the additional heat source of $28{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ therein, it was to be achieved early strength development control standards (4.5MPa) presented as a crack control scheme or more, thus, It was able to remove after age of 14hr from mold. On the other hand, under the conditions of $10{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ that a natural curing temperature in the tunnel, it was analyzed must ensure the curing time of 36hr or more after concrete placement. Throughout this study, the concrete strength development and the temperature in the early-age concrete, it can find that reverify the curing temperature is greatly affected, even concrete fly ash is mixed 10%, if it is possible to raise the surface temperature for a predetermined time, is not a problem in the early strength development.

  • This report is the result of a basic experiment done on a mock-up tunnel, of what happens to the ventilated flow and fire driven flow inside a railway tunnel as the current inside the tunnel changes when an anti-smoke or a radio frequency invert control is installed. The duct used in this experiment is 10m in length, 0.5m in height and 0.25m in width and made of acrylic. An anti-smoke system with a motor that can produce current of 10m/sec maximum in order to create ventilated flow, has been installed. A honeycomb has been installed at the entrance of the duct to create a current flow that exists in tunnels. In order to create a ventilated flow, a current of 4m/s, 6m/s and 8m/s were generated using the anti-smoke system, as the study of current developed. A Hot-wire(TSI) and Pressure sensor(ENDEVCO) was installed in the duct, 1m apart, as the measurement of current and pressure went on. The current and pressure were automatically measured through the Lap View program and PC; the current flow in the mock-up tunnel generated by the honeycomb has been analyzed the pressure distribution and pressure drop has been analyzed.

  • The road tunnel is a semi-closed space that is blocked on all sides except the entrance and exit, and in the event of a fire, the smoke of the fire spreads longitudinally due to heat buoyancy caused by the fire and air currents that always exist in the tunnel. To solve this problem, smoke removal facilities are installed in road tunnels to secure a safe evacuation environment by controlling the direction of movement of smoke or directly smoking at fire points. In urban areas, the service level of urban roads decreases due to the increase in traffic due to the increase in population, and as a solution, the construction of underground roads in urban areas is increasing. When a fire occurs during hydrogen leakage through TPRD of a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCEV), the fire intensity depends on the amount of leakage, and the maximum fire intensity depends on the orifice diameter of the TPRD. Considering the TPRD orifice diameter of 1.8 mm, this study analyzed the diffusion distance of fire smoke according to the wind speed of the roadway and the opening interval of the large exhaust port when the maximum fire intensity was 15 MW. As a result, it was analyzed that air flow in the tunnel could be controlled if the wind speed of the road in the tunnel was less than 1.25 m/s, and smoke could be controlled within 200 m from the fire if the damper interval was 50 m and 100 m.

  • The characteristics Prandt1-Meyer expansion of supersonic flow with condensation through a wavy wall in a channel are investigated by experiment and numerical direct marching method of characteristics. In the present study, for the case of moist air flow in the type of indraft supersonic wind tunnel, the dependency of location of formation and reflection of the oblique shock wave generated by the wavy wall and the distribution of flow properties, on the specific humidity and temperature at the entrance of wavy wall and the attack angle of the wavy wall to the main stream is clarified by schlieren photograph, distribution of static pressure and Mach number, and plots of numerical results. Also, we confirm that the wavy wall plays an important key role in the formation of oblique shock wave, and that the effect of condensation on the flow field appears apparently.

  • In order to develop a high speed train, various conditions have been considered. Fatigue strength assessment by the fluctuation of pressure is an important one. In this study, a numerical simulation has been performed to estimate the fluctuation and frequency of pressure when KHST(Korean High Speed Train)passes through tunnels in the Kyung-Bu high-speed railway. The simulation was based on KHST running the Kyung-Bu high-speed line with the speed of 350km/h and the interval of 10 minute headway. And the tunnel entrance speed was estimated by TPS program. Therefore, the fluctuation and frequency of pressure is expressed in Weibull distribution function in the above running situation. The result in this study would be good guidance to calculate the fatigue life and the index of reliability of body structure. We are going to conduct more study to measure the real value of the pressure of the carbody passing through tunnels, to assess the fatigue reliability and to develop method & procedure for the fatigue reliability design.

  • As a series of studies about natural ventilation driven by wind in basement parking lots of apartment, the influence of opening size and surrounding buildings on ventilation rate was analyzed. Natural ventilation in underground parking lots almost rely on wind than temperature difference. To investigate natural ventilation driven by wind, wind tunnel tests by using scale model and tracer gas method were conducted. $CO_2$-gas concentration was measured, natural ventilation rates were calculated. The experimental results showed that the natural ventilation rate is more reliable to wind direction and surrounding building than opening size and distance between buildings. It was verified that surrounding buildings play a principal role in increasing air flow rate by accelerating wind speed, and growing turbulence intensity. And it showed that ventilation performance is able to be increased by oblique wind to entrance ramp than head on wind in underground parking lots with surrounding buildings.

  • Air pollution levels of gases and aerosol particles inside the Jeongneung and Hongjimun tunnels of the Naebu express way in Seoul were investigated through on-road measurement using a mobile emission laboratory (MEL) on February 8, 2011. The concentrations of $NO_x$, $CO_2$, number concentration of particles ranging 21-560 nm, and surface area of particles deposited on a human lung almost linearly increased with increasing distance from the tunnel entrance, and decreased rapidly before the tunnel exit. This trend was observed regardless of tunnel length and driving directions, which thought to be caused by semi-transverse ventilation facilities of the tunnels. The concentration increments per 1-m distance for $NO_x$, $CO_2$, deposited particle surface area, and number of particles ranging 21-560 nm were 0.61~0.80 ppb, 0.16~0.21 ppm, $0.20{\sim}0.29{\mu}m^2/cm^3$, and 117~192 particles/$cm^3$, respectively. Average pollution levels inside the two tunnels for $CO_2$, deposited particle surface area, and number of particles >5.6 nm ranged 681~748 ppm, $246{\sim}381{\mu}m^2/cm^3$, and $2.4{\sim}6.7{\times}10^5$ particles/$cm^3$, respectively. In case of $NO_x$, the maximum concentration exceeded 1 ppm. These pollution levels inside the tunnels are much higher than those at urban background sites. This result can be utilized as basic data to evaluate the effectiveness of present ventilation system for reducing the pollution level caused by vehicles inside the tunnels.

  • The peptidyl transferase center (PTC) is located in a protein free environment, thus confirming that the ribosome is a ribozyme. This arched void has dimensions suitable for accommodating the 3'ends of the A-and the P-site tRNAs, and is situated within a universal sizable symmetry-related region that connects all ribosomal functional centers involved in amino-acid polymerization. The linkage between the elaborate PTC architecture and the A-site tRNA position revealed that the A-to P-site passage of the tRNA 3'end is performed by a rotatory motion, which leads to stereochemistry suitable for peptide bond formation and for substrate mediated catalysis, thus suggesting that the PTC evolved by genefusion. Adjacent to the PTC is the entrance of the protein exit tunnel, shown to play active roles in sequence-specific gating of nascent chains and in responding to cellular signals. This tunnel also provides a site that may be exploited for local co-translational folding and seems to assist in nascent chain trafficking into the hydrophobic space formed by the first bacterial chaperone, the trigger factor. Many antibiotics target ribosomes. Although the ribosome is highly conserved, subtle sequence and/or conformational variations enable drug selectivity, thus facilitating clinical usage. Comparisons of high-resolution structures of complexes of antibiotics bound to ribosomes from eubacteria resembling pathogens, to an archaeon that shares properties with eukaryotes and to its mutant that allows antibiotics binding, demonstrated the unambiguous difference between mere binding and therapeutical effectiveness. The observed variability in antibiotics inhibitory modes, accompanied by the elucidation of the structural basis to antibiotics mechanism justifies expectations for structural based improved properties of existing compounds as well as for the development of novel drugs.
