  • In the feed drive systems or the spindle systems of machine tools that consist of many mechanical components, a torsional vibration is often generated because of its elastic elements in torque transmission-Generally, the accuracy of motion control system is strongly influenced by the dynamic behavior of coupled transmission components Especially, a torsional vibration caused by the elasticity of mechanical elements might deteriorate the quick movement of system and lead to shorten the life time of the mechanical transmission elements. So, it is necessary to analyze the electromechanical system mathematically to optimize the dynamic characteristics of the feed m1d spindle system. In this paper, based on the DC motor model, a model of electro-drive system with motor has been developed and an optimal criterion for tuning the gain of speed controller is discussed. The frequency bandwidth of the system and the damping ratio in time domain are optimal design specifications for the gain adjustment speed controller. The gains of PI speed controller are then derived from the bandwidth and damping ratio, and those relationships have been classified.

Learning Behaviors of Stochastic Gradient Radial Basis Function Network Algorithms for Odor Sensing Systems

  • Learning behaviors of a radial basis function network (RBFN) using a singular value decomposition (SVD) and stochastic gradient (SG) algorithm, together named RBF-SVD-SG, for odor sensing systems are analyzed, and a fast training method is proposed. RBF input data is from a conducting polymer sensor array. It is revealed in this paper that the SG algorithm for the fine-tuning of centers and widths still shows ill-behaving learning results when a sufficiently small convergence coefficient is not used. Since the tuning of centers in RBFN plays a dominant role in the performance of RBFN odor sensing systems, our analysis is focused on the center-gradient variance of the RBFN-SVD-SG algorithm. We found analytically that the steadystate weight fluctuation and large values of a convergence coefficient can lead to an increase in variance of the center-gradient estimate. Based on this analysis, we propose to use the least mean square algorithm instead of SVD in adjusting the weight for stable steady-state weight behavior. Experimental results of the proposed algorithm have shown faster learning speed and better classification performance.

A study on vibration characteristics and tuning of smart cantilevered beams featuring an electo-rheological fulid

  • Electro-Rheological(ER) fluids undergo a phase-change when subjected to an external electic field, and this phase-change typically manifests itself as a many-order-of-magnitude change in the rheological behavior. This phenomenon permits the global stiffness and energy- dissipation properties of the beam structures to be tuned in order to synthesize the desired vibration characteristics. This paper reports on a proof-of-concept experimental investigation focussed on evaluation the vibration properties of hollow cantilevered beams filled with an ER fluid. and consequently deriving an empirical model for predicting field-dependent vibration characteristics. A hydrous-based ER fluid consisting of corn starch and silicone oil is employed. The beams are considered to be uniform viscoelastic materials and modelled as a viscously-damped harmonic oscillator. Natural frequency, damping ratio and elastic modulus are evaluated with respect to the electric field and compared among three different beams: two types of different volume fraction of ER fluid and one type of different particle concentration of ER fluid by weight. Transient and forced vibration responses are examined in time domain to demonstrate the validity of the proposed empirical model and to evaluate the feasibility of using the ERfluid as an actuator in a closed-loop control system.

Filtered Velocity Feedback 제어기를 이용한 평판 능동진동제어 (Active Vibration Control of Plates Using Filtered Velocity Feedback Controllers)

  • This paper reports a filtered velocity feedback(FVF) controller, which is an alternative to direct velocity feedback(DVFB) controller. The instability problems at high frequencies due to non-collocated sensor/actuator configuration with the DVFB can be alleviated by the proposed FVF controller. The FVF controller is designed to filter out the unstable high frequency response. The dynamics of a clamped plate under forces and moments and the FVF controllers are formulated. The stability of the control system and performance are investigated with the open loop transfer function(OLTF). It is found that the FVF controller has a higher gain margin than the corresponding DVFB controller owing to the rapid roll-off behavior at high frequencies. Although the gain margin cannot be fully utilized because of the enhancement at the high frequencies, the vibration at the modes lower than the tuning frequency is well controlled. This performance of the FVF controller is shown to be improved from that of the DVFB controller. It is, however, noted that the stability around the tuning frequency is very sensitive so that the enhancement in vibration level should be followed. The reduction performance at low frequencies using the FVF controller should be compromised with the enhancement in the vibration at high frequencies while designing the controller.

음향공명기의 비선형 음향감쇠 특성에 관한 수치적 연구 (Numerical Study of Nonlinear Acoustic Damping Induced by Acoustic Resonators in a Combustion Chamber)

  • 반파장 공명기가 장착된 연소실의 비선형 음향 감쇠를 알아보기 위하여 비선형 음향해석을 수행하였다. 먼저 공명기가 없는 기본 연소실에 80 dB에서 150 dB의 넓은 범위의 음향파를 가진하여 음향장을 분석하였다. 제 1 접선방향 음향 모드의 감쇠율은 가진되는 음향파의 크기에 따라 비선형적으로 증가하였고, 125 dB 이상부터 비선형성이 나타나기 시작했다. 다음으로 반파장 공명기의 감쇠 효과를 조사하였다. 선형해석으로부터 유도된 최적의 음향학적인 동조 조건이 비선형 음향해석에서도 여전히 유효함을 알 수 있었다. 큰 음향파의 섭동에 대한 감쇠는 효과적이지만, 선형 음향 가진에 비해서 음향학적인 감쇠기로써의 기능은 작아짐을 알 수 있었다.

차내 정보 시스템의 시각적 요구 평가를 위한 사용자 주도의 시각 차폐 기법 (A User-driven Visual Occlusion Method for Measuring the Visual Demand of In-Vehicle Information Systems (IVIS))

  • Visual occlusion method is a visual demand measuring technique which uses periodic vision/occlusion cycle to simulate driving environment. It became one of the most popular techniques for the evaluation of in-vehicle interfaces due to its robustness and cost-effectiveness. However, it has a limitation in that the vision/occlusion cycle forces the user to use the IVIS at a predetermined pace, while a driver decides when to use the device on his/her own in actual driving. This paper proposes a user-driven visual occlusion method for measuring the visual demand of in-vehicle interfaces. An experiment was conducted to examine the visual demand of an in-vehicle interface prototype using both the existing (system-driven) occlusion method and the proposed (user-driven) one. Two in-vehicle tasks were evaluated: address input and radio tuning. The results showed that, for the radio tuning task, there were significant differences in total shutter open time and resumability ratio between the methods. The user-driven visual occlusion method not only allows a better representation of drivers' behavior, but it also seems to provide more information on the chunkability of a task.

Cascaded Volume Bragg Grating for Narrow Spectral Linewidth in High-power Laser Diodes

  • Narrowing the spectral linewidth and improving the wavelength stability of high-power laser diodes (HPLDs) are both in high demand for rapidly maturing industrial laser applications. In this study, we investigate the spectral behavior of a commercial HPLD bar module composed of 19 laser diodes (LDs) in a single-layered bar with a built-in volume Bragg grating (VBG) and an additional cascaded VBG. Optical loss due to the extra cascaded VBG is kept below 5% when the optical output is 5 W or more. The full width at half maximum of the Fabry-Perot peak from the cascaded VBG is reduced to about 12.4% and 29.1% at the edge (1st LD) and center (10th LD) of the HPLD bar module respectively, compared to using only a built-in VBG at an optical power of 10 W or more. In addition, fine wavelength tuning is achieved by temperature control of the extra VBG, and the obtained wavelength-tuning range amounts to about 10.6 pm/K.

  • A controller described in this paper is designed for implicit generalised minimum varience controller with variable time delays in which the weighting polynominals are calculated to reduce the output and control signals variances. This paper is based on the fact that the pole-assigment equation may have multiple solutions if the weighting polynominals are not of minimal order. It is shown that the larger order of the weighting polynominals increment the better is the stochastic behavior of the closed-loop system with variable time delays without changs in the deterministic behavior of the system. Based on this theory, the controller is applied to position control of a three-link manipulater with parameter uncertainty.

  • The general wavelet transform has profitable property in non-stationary signal analysis specially. The tunable Q-factor wavelet transform is a fully-discrete wavelet transform for which the Q-factor Q and the asymptotic redundancy r, of the transform are easily and independently specified. In particular, the specified parameters Q and r can be real-valued. Therefore, by tuning Q, the oscillatory behavior of the wavelet can be chosen to match the oscillatory behavior of the signal of interest, so as to enhance the sparsity of a sparse signal representation. The TQWT is well suited to fast algorithms for sparsity-based inverse problems because it is a Parseval frame, easily invertible, and can be efficiently implemented. The transform is based on a real valued scaling factor and is implemented using a perfect reconstruction over-sampled filter bank with real-valued sampling factors. The transform is parameterized by its Q-factor and its over-sampling rate, with modest over-sampling rates being sufficient for the analysis/synthesis functions to be well localized. This paper describes filter design of 2D discrete-time wavelet transform for which the Q-factor is easily specified. With the advantage of this transform, perfect reconstruction filter design and implementation for performance improvement are focused in this paper. Hence, the 2D transform can be tuned according to the oscillatory behavior of the image signal to which it is applied. Therefore, application for performance improvement in multimedia communication field was evaluated.

Hence, the transform can be tuned according to the oscillatory behavior of the image signal to which it is applied. The tunable Q-factor wavelet transform (TQWT) is a fully-discrete wavelet transform for which the Q-factor, Q, of the underlying wavelet and the asymptotic redundancy (over-sampling rate), r, of the transform are easily and independently specified. In particular, the specified parameters Q and r can be real-valued. Therefore, by tuning Q, the oscillatory behavior of the wavelet can be chosen to match the oscillatory behavior of the signal of interest, so as to enhance the sparsity of a sparse signal representation. The TQWT is well suited to fast algorithms for sparsity-based inverse problems because it is a Parseval frame, easily invertible, and can be efficiently implemented. The TQWT can also be used as an easily-invertible discrete approximation of the continuous wavelet transform. The transform is based on a real valued scaling factor (dilation-factor) and is implemented using a perfect reconstruction over-sampled filter bank with real-valued sampling factors. The transform is parameterized by its Q-factor and its oversampling rate (redundancy), with modest oversampling rates (e. g. 3-4 times overcomplete) being sufficient for the analysis/synthesis functions to be well localized. Therefore, This method services good performance in image processing fields.
