  • Cold forging, carried out at room temperature, leads to high dimensional accuracy and excellent surface integrity as compared to other forging methods such as warm and hot forgings. In the cold forging process, WC-Co (Tungsten Carbide-Cobalt) alloy is the mainly used material as a core dies because of its superior hardness and strength as compared to other structural materials. For cold forging, die life is the most significant factor because it is directly related to the manufacturing cost due to periodic die replacement in mass production. To investigate die life of WC-Co alloy for cold forging, mechanical properties such as strength and fatigue are essentially necessary. Generally, uniaxial tensile test and fatigue test are the most efficient and simplest testing method. However, uniaxial tension is not efficiently application to WC-Co alloy because of its sensitivity to alignment of the specimen due to its brittleness and difficulty in thread machining. In this study, shape of specimen, tools, and testing methods, which are appropriate for uniaxial tensile test for WC-Co alloy, are proposed. The test results such as Young's modulus, tensile strength and stress-strain curves are compared to those in previous literature to validate the proposed testing methods. Based on the validation of test results it was concluded that the newly developed testing method is applicable to other cemented carbides like Titanium carbides with high strength and brittleness, and also can be utilized to carry out fatigue tests for further investigation on die life of cold forging.

  • Pt thin films on Cr or Ti interlayer were deposited onto a tungsten carbide(WC) substrate by the ion beam assisted DC magnetron sputtering. The various atomic percent of Cr and Ti underneath of the Pt films were prepared to examine the total thin film characteristics. The microstructure and surface analysis of the specimen were conducted by using the SEM, XRD and AFM. Mechanical properties such as hardness and adhesion strength of Pt thin film also were examined. The interlayer of pure Ti was formed with 40 nm thickness while that of pure Cr was done with 50 nm as standard reference. The growth rate of either Cr or Ti thin film was almost same under the same deposition conditions. The SEM images showed that anisotropic grain of Pt thin films consisting of dense columnar structures irrespectively grew from the different target compositions. The values of hardness and adhesion strength of Cr/Pt thin film coated on a WC substrate were higher than those of Ti/Pt thin film.

Generally, the aspheric glass lens is manufactured by GMP(Grass Molding Press) method using WC(tungsten carbide) mold core. In this study, the thermal deformation which occurs in the cooling step of GMP was considered, and it was compensated the form of mold core. The lens which was molded by compensated mold core was satisfied that can be applied to the actual specifications.

  • In this research, the optimal grinding condition has been obtained by design of experiment (DOE) fur the development of aspheric lens for the 3 Mega Pixel, 2.5x optical zoom camera-phone module. Also, the tungsten carbide (WC) mold was processed by the method of ultra precision grinding under this optimal grinding condition. The influence of diamond-liked carbon (DLC) coating on form accuracy (PV) and surface roughness (Ra) of the mold was evaluated through measurements after DCL coating using ion plating on the ground mold. Also, aspheric glass lenses were molded, some before DLC coating of the mold and some after the DLC coating. The optical characteristics of each sample, molded by the different molds, were compared with each other.

  • Helium-induced defect nucleation and accumulation in polycrystalline W and W0.5 wt%ZrC (W0.5ZrC) were studied in-situ using the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) combined with 40 keV He+ irradiation at 800 and 1000℃ at the maximum damage level of 1 dpa. Radiation-induced dislocation loops were not observed in the current study. W0.5ZrC was found to be less susceptible to irradiation damage in terms of helium bubble formation and growth, especially at lower temperature (800 ℃) when vacancies were less mobile. The ZrC particles present in the W matrix pin the forming helium bubbles via interaction between C atom and neighbouring W atom at vacancies. This reduces the capability of helium to trap a vacancy which is required to form the bubble core and, as a consequence, delays, the bubble nucleation. At 1000 ℃, significant bubble growth occurred in both materials and all the present bubbles transitioned from spherical to faceted shape, whereas at 800 ℃, the faceted helium bubble population was dominated in W.

  • Ir-Re thin films with Ti interlayer were deposited onto the tungsten carbide substrate by ion beam assisted DC magnetron sputtering. The Ir-Re films were prepared with targets of having two atomic percent of 7:3 and 5:5. The microstructure and surface analysis of the specimen were conducted by using SEM, XRD and AFM. Mechanical properties such as hardness and adhesion strength of Ir-Re thin film also were examined. The interlayer of pure titanium was formed with 100 nm thickness. The film growth of Ir-30at.%Re was faster than that of Ir-50at.%Re in the same deposition conditions. Ir-Re thin films consisted of dense and columnar structure irrespective of the different target compositions. The values of hardness and adhesion strength of Ir-30at.%Re thin film coated on WC substrate were higher than those of Ir-50at.%Re thin film.

  • In this study, we aims to develop the machining technology for the ultra precision surface and profile accuracy. For this purpose, we construct the electrolytic in process grinding system (ELID grinding) and apply to the cylindrical and internal grinding. Through the various machining experiments such as SCM steel., ceramics, tungsten carbide etc., we have obtained nanometer surface roughness. And we have applied this mirror grinding technique to hydraulic manual valve and mold core of mini disk optical pick-up base. For the development of fine mechanical part machining technology, e have made multi fiber optical connector using fine grinding technology. • Recently aspheric lenses are widely used for superpricision optical instruments, such as cellular phone camera modules, digital cameras and optical communication modules. The aspherical lenses are processed using mold core under high temperature compressive forming pressure. It is imperative to develop superhard protective films for the life extension of lens forming mold core. Especially ta-C films with higher $sp^3$ fractions receive attentions for the life extension of lens forming mold and, in turn, the cost reduction of lenses due to their suprior high temperature stability, high hardness and smooth surfaces. In this study ta-C films were processed on WC mold as a function of substrate bias voltage using FVA (Filtered Vacuum Arc) method. The processed films were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and nano-indentation to investigate bonding nature and hardness, respectively. The film with maximun 87% of $sp^3$ fraction was obtained at the substrate bias voltage of -60 V, which was closest to ta-C film. ta-C films showed better high temperature stability by sustaining relatively high fraction of $sp^3$ bonding even after 2,000 glass lens forming applications.
