We develop a purification process of $Hg_2Br_2$ raw powders using a physical vapor transport(PVT) process, which is essential for the fabrication of a high performance acousto-optic tunable filter(AOTF) module. Specifically, we characterize and compare three $Hg_2Br_2$ powders: $Hg_2Br_2$ raw powder, $Hg_2Br_2$ powder purified under pumping conditions, and $Hg_2Br_2$ powder purified under vacuum sealing. Before and after purification, we characterize the powder samples through X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The corresponding results indicate that physical properties of the $Hg_2Br_2$ compound are not damaged even after the purification process. The impurities and concentration in the purified $Hg_2Br_2$ powder are evaluated by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy. Notably, compared to the sample purified under pumping conditions, the purification process under vacuum sealing results in a higher purity $Hg_2Br_2$ (99.999 %). In addition, when the second vacuum sealing purification process is performed, the remaining impurities are almost removed, giving rise to $Hg_2Br_2$ with ultra-high purity. This high purification process might be possible due to independent control of impurities and $Hg_2Br_2$ materials under the optimized vacuum sealing. Preparation of such a highly purified $Hg_2Br_2$ materials will pave a promising way toward a high-quality $Hg_2Br_2$ single crystal and then high performance AOTF modules.

In case of an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric sensor, the phase compensating
technique is particularly necessary in applying the interferometer to detecting acoustic emission signals because of signal-fading problems. The technique makes it possible to maintain the phase at the quadrature point. In this paper, we developed the stabilization control sensor system that is composed of a broadband light source, a tunable Fabry-Perot (F-P) filter and a control-circuit board. A tension test of a composite specimen was performed to verify if the developed system could compensate the phase change induced from the tension strain and keep the phase at the quadrature point.

For the application of structural health monitoring such as AE detection, a stabilized FBG sensor system with wide dynamic range was proposed. A tunable Fabry-Perot filter with narrow free spectral range(FSR) was used to simplify the multiplexing demodulator for FBG vibration sensors. Stabilization controlling system was also developed for the maintenance of maximum sensitivity of the sensors. In order to verify the performance of the proposed FBG vibration sensor system, we measured sensitivity, and the system showed the average sensitivity of 256 $n{\in}_{mas}/{\sqrt{Hz}}$. Finally, multi-points vibration tests using in-line FBG sensors were conducted to validate the multiplexing performance of the FBG system.
We demonstrate a ring type wavelength swept laser incorporating a fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter in a laser cavity using 1300 nm semiconductor optical amplifier as a gain medium. The output characteristics of the wavelength swept laser according to the applied scanning frequencies are analyzed in the temporal and spectral domain. The output of the wavelength swept laser decreases dramatically as the scanning frequency increases. And there is a significant peak power imbalance between the forward scan and the backward scan as the scanning frequency increases. Its use in practical applications might be limited.

Bandpass sampling technique has an advantage that it uses lower sampling frequency than Nyquist criterion. But special care is required in choosing sampling frequency to avoid self-image overlapping in the first Nyquist region. Recently, the second-order BPS techniques which can suppress possible self-image by using an additional ADC and by employing digital signal processing have been proposed. This paper addresses a complex BPS based SDR front-end. Unlike general second-order BPS, it needs simple FIR filter to compensate delay in the second ADC. We show a method to find proper sampling frequencies to down convert RF signals selected by tunable RF filter operating in arbitrary frequency range.
We demonstrate a k-domain linearization using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) array for Fourier domain optical coherence tomography based on a wavelength swept laser. The k-domain linearization is carried out with an interpolation method using a FBG array with five FBGs. The measured signal-to-noise ratio from the point spread function after k-domain linearization is 12 dB improved over that of without k-domain linearization at the 1 mm depth of the sample. Clear OCT imaging of the slide glass with k-domain linearization could be obtained.

A low-voltage, low-power analog front-end IC for neural recording implant devices is presented. The proposed IC consists of a low-noise neural amplifier and a programmable active bandpass filter to process neural signals residing in the band of 1 Hz to 5 kHz. The neural amplifier is based on a source-degenerated folded-cascode operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) for good noise performance while the following bandpass filter utilizes a low-power current-mirror based OTA with programmable high-pass cutoff frequencies from 1 Hz to 300 Hz and low-pass cutoff frequencies from 300 Hz to 8 kHz. The total recording analog front-end provides 53.1 dB of voltage gain, $4.68{\mu}Vrms$ of integrated input referred noise within 1 Hz to 10 kHz, and noise efficiency factor of 3.67. The IC is designed using $18-{\mu}m$ CMOS process and consumes a total of $3.2{\mu}W$ at 1-V supply voltage. The layout area of the IC is $0.19 mm^2$.

This paper describes a string resonator that is used for the interrogation system of a Fiber Bragg Grating(FBG) strain sensor. The strain on the fiber piece is calculated from the measured frequency based on that the natural frequency of a string is a function of the applied absolute strain. Existing research considered a fiber as a string, but a fiber is not a string in the strict sense due to its bending stiffness, thus the fiber should be modeled as a beam accompanied with an axial force. In the vibration modeling, the relationship between the strain and the natural frequency is derived, and then the resonance condition is described in terms of both the phase and the mode shape for sustaining resonant motion. Several experiments verify the effectiveness of the proposed model of the fiber. The performance of the string resonator is analyzed by measuring the frequency change according to the applied strains in the dynamic range of 1100$\mu\varepsilon$ referred to the displacement from capacitance sensor. From the experimental results, the implemented string resonator provides the accuracy of $\pm$3$\mu\varepsilon$, the quasi-static resolution of ~0.1$\mu\varepsilon$(rms) which amount to be $\pm$0.17$\mu\textrm{m}$ and ~6nm respectively, in case of fiber length of 56mm. For a dynamic strain, it can provide the accuracy of ~3$\mu\varepsilon$ until the frequency comes to 8Hz. As a consequence, the string resonator proposed for FBG sensor provides the high accuracy and the high resolution in strain measurement, and also it is expecting to be used, for the application, to not only strain but also displacement measuring device.

In this paper, the method of designing an active inductor for MMIC is proposed. The proposed tunable active inductor is composed of a cascade FET with feedback capacitors and resistors. Because of a very low series resistance in the proposed inductor, a very high Q factor can be obtained. Also it has an excellent characteristics suitable for high frequency band. The inductance value can be changed by controlling feedback capacitors, resistors and a bias voltage respectively. When the feedback resistor and parallel resistor within circuits are varied, the inductance value is changed from 0.2 nH to 1.7 nH in the range 1 to 15 GHz. Also we designed bandpass filter using the proposed active inductor and it shows the insertion loss of 0.4 dB and return loss, 20 dB.

For the simultaneous measurement of strain and damage signal a fiber Bragg grating sensor system with a dual demodulator was proposed. The dual demodulator is composed of a demodulator using a tunable Fabry-Perot filter measuring the low-frequency signal with large magnitude such as strain and the other using a passive Mach-Zehnder interferometer detecting the high-frequency signal with small amplitude such as impact or damage signal. Using the proposed fiber Bragg grating sensor system, both the strain and damage signals of a cross-ply laminated composite beam under tensile loading were simultaneously measured. The strain and damage signals detected by single fiber Bragg grating sensor showed that sudden strain shifts were accompanied with vibration at a maximum frequency of several hundreds of kilohertz at the instant of matrix crack propagation in the 90 degree layer in composite beam.
