  • The pressure drop and heat transfer of the spirally indented tubes were measured and analyzed. Eight sample tubes of indentation depth 0.4, 0.7mm and indentation pitch 10, 14, 20, 26mm were used in this experimental tests. And all the tubes have same outer diameter of 16mm, and same indentation start number of I. Air was used as the internal fluid from 10000 to 50000 for Reynolds Number. The friction factors and heat transfer coefficients have increased when indentation depths increase and indentation pitches decrease. Finally, the correlations were made between the effect of the tube geometry and characteristics of tubes for the pressure drop and heat transfer.

  • Major cause of defects in steam generator tubes at nuclear power plant is the accumulation of magnetite and other byproducts of corrosion in the crevice gap between support plates and tubes. Since damaged tubes result in contamination of the secondary coolant by the radioactive primary coolant, they represent a safety hazard. Early detection of magnetite buildup is, therefore, imperative in order to take remedial measures such as chemical flushing. Although the eddy current testing is being used for the inspection of steam generator tubes, the interpretation of resulting signals is generally a difficult task. This paper uses the phase of sensor coil emf as the test signal to find a way of easier signal interpretation. Numerical study using FEM shows that the shape of resulting signal is good for identifying the relative position of the probe to the support plate, and for discreminating the different shapes and degrees of magnetite buildup in the crevice gap region.

  • An experimental study was conducted to analyze the effects of oil on refrigerant flow through adiabatic capillary tubes, and to develop a model for mass flow rates of refrigerant/oil mixture at various capillary tubes and flow conditions. Mass flow rates and the profiles of the pressures and temperatures along the capillary tubes was obtained with the oil concentration of R-22/SUNISO 4GS oil mixture at various test conditions. The flow trends as a function of geometry and flow conditions for pure refrigerant and refrigerant/oil mixture were similar in adiabatic capillary tubes. Mass flow rate of the refrigerant/oil mixture was less than that of pure refrigerant at the same test conditions.

  • In axisymmetric tube reducing process for thin sheet metal tubes, the reduction ration of diameter is an important factor in the process design. For very thin sheet metal tubes, tube reducing cannot be successfully employed due to wrinkling of the edge portion of a tube as well as due to buckling of its rest portion. In the present study, thin sheet metal tubes are subjected to internal pressure during the tube reducing process in order to increase the forming limits. Analysis is made for the sound flow deformation in nonsteady tube reducing considering the normal anisotropy. Experiments are carried out for brass tubes. The present study is shown to give an effective guide line in designing the tube reducing process for very thin-walled sheet metal tubes. Hpwever, it is suggested that an analysis for instability should be made to design the process more effectively.

  • Thermal deformations and stresses due to temperature changes are the serious problems in cryogenic structures such as the torque tube in a superconducting generator, In this paper, the equations of thermal expansion coefficients expressed only by material properties and winding angles are derived for the filament wound composite tubes. The experimental results of thermal contraction of CFRP tubes are compared with those from theoretical approach. Composite tubes with optimally regulated thermal expansion coefficient are designed on the basis of the study for the torque tube in the superconducting generator with temperature distributions varying from 300K to 4.2 K. The filament winding angle of composites resisting thermal stresses properly is sought by the finite element method using layered shell elements. The results show that the composite tubes designed for the requirements in cryogenic environments can effectively cope with the thermal stress problem.

  • A new gastrotrich species of the genus Crasiella (Planodasyidae) is described from the sublittoral sandy bottom of Jeju Island, South Korea. The family Planodasyidae and the genus Crasiella are recorded for the first time from East Asia. Crasiella clauseni n. sp. differs from its congeneric species by the combination of characters: absence of cephalic sensory pits; unseparated arrangement of anterior tubes and ventrolateral tubes, comprising about 120 adhesive tubes along whole body length; 5-7 horizontal rows of adhesive tubes and a pair of TbV in the anterior part of pharyngeal region; bifid pedicles with 8-11 posterior adhesive tubes; and tube-shaped seminal receptacle and copulatory organ. This paper deals with description of the new species, and provides a key to the species of genus Crasiella.

  • It has been reported that the plugged steam generator tube of Three Mile Island Unit 1 in America was damaged by growing flaw and then this steam generator tube destroyed the nearby steam generator tubes of normal state. On this account, stabilizer installation is necessary to prevent secondary damage of the steam generator tubes. The flow-induced vibration is one of the major causes of the fluid-elastic instability. To guarantee the structural integrity of steam generator tubes, the flow-induced vibration caused by the fluid-elastic instability is necessary to be suppressed. In this paper, the effective velocity and the critical velocity are calculated to evaluate the fluid-elastic instability. In addition, stability ratio value of the steam generator tubes is evaluated in order to propose one criterion when to determine stabilizer installation.

  • Enhanced tubes are widely used in air-conditioning and process industries. Structural tubes having three-dimensional roughness are well known to be able to significantly enhance pool boiling heat transfer of refrigerants. In this study, five structural enhanced tubes having different fin density, fin height, and fin gap width were tested using R-134a. Results showed that the heat transfer coefficient was increased with increased fin density. Within test range, the effect of fin height on pool boiling heat transfer coefficient was insignificant. The heat transfer coefficients of the optimum configuration (2047 fpm, 0.21 mm gap width) tube were lower than those of other commercial enhanced tubes. This might be due to the larger fin gap width of the present enhanced tube.

  • The panels were fabricated to characterize the contamination of Magnesium Oxide (MgO) thin films by phosphors and ion bombardments in AC-PDPs. Forty-six inch WVGA panels of the surface and vertical discharge type were manufactured. The experiment was designed to investigate the relationship between the MgO thin films and phosphor contamination caused by ion bombardments in a plasma environment to produce a life time test. The contamination of MgO thin films by phosphors was investigated by way of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

  • This paper describes extraction procedures for the center coordinates of steam generator tubes of Youngkwang nuclear power plant No. 6 unit. The centering coordinates of tubes are needed for monitoring whether ECT probe is exactly inserted into tube or not. However, The tube image tends to have poor contrast because steam generator bowl is sealed. The centering coordinates extraction procedure consists of two steps. The first step is to process the region with high contrast in entire image of steam generator tubes. Using the center points extracted in the first step and the geometry of tubes lined up in regular triangle patterns the centering coordinates of the rest region with low contrast...
