  • In a reflected shock tunnel, stagnation conditions of a nozzle are determined by the flow behind a reflected shock. When calculating the flow behind the reflected shock, unlike a shock tube, the flow leakage through the nozzle is to be considered. The analytical studies were done to find out the characteristics of the stagnation conditions of the nozzle with various nozzle throat size. Experiments and numerical simulations were also carried out for further understanding of the flow leakage effects. It was found that the nozzle stagnation pressure was diminished by the increase of the size of the nozzle throat. It was also found that the steady pressure in the stagnation were maintained well at the area ratio of the driven tube to the nozzle throat is 4.5.

  • In this paper, we persent the results of on experimental investigations pertaining to the structural behavior of new type of concrete filled fiber reinforced plastic circular tubes (i.e., hybrid CFFT, HCFFT) which are suggested in order to mitigate the problems associated with the concrete filled steel-concrete composite tube (CFT) and the concrete filled fiber reinforced plastic tube (CFFT). It is found that when the HCFFT is used in the construction of pile foundation the HCFFT pile can transfer axial as well as flexural loads from the superstructure to the underground effectively in comparison with CFT and CFFT piles.

  • The integrity of steam generator tubes in nuclear power plant should be maintained sufficiently during operation. For sake of this, complicated assessment procedures are required such as fracture mechanics analysis, etc. The integrity assessment of tubes has been performed by using conventional deterministic approaches while there are many uncertainties to carry out a rational evaluation. In this respect, probabilistic integrity assessment is considered as an alternative method for integrity assessment. The objectives of this study are to develop an integrity assessment system based on probabilistic fracture mechanics and to predict the failure probability of steam generator tubes containing an axial through-wall crack. The developed integrity assessment system consists of three evaluation modules, which apply first order reliability method, second order reliability method and Monte Carlo simulation method, respectively. The system has been applied to predict failure probability of steam generator tubes and the estimation results showed a promising applicability of the probabilistic integrity assessment system.

  • The polarizatin properties of an internal-mirror 543 nm He-Ne laser with and without a transverse magnetic field were investigated for single-mode operation. Two orthogonal eigenpolarizations field to the natural tube axes of laser were observed when the emitted laser output was linearly polarized. Polarization unstability between these polarizations occurred when the applying a 500 gauss transverse magnetic field at 35$^{\circ}$ with respect to the natural tube axes of laser. Under such conditions stable single-mode operation which is useful for the frequency stabilization of a 543 He-Ne laser to $I_2$-saturated absorptions was obtained in the tuning range of 880 MHz.

  • In recent years, air-conditioning units designed with higher efficiency and more compactness are required due to emphasis on energy efficiency in home electrical appliances. This trend in the air-conditioning industries has accelerated the development of improved heat exchanger with a better performance in heat transfer aspects. In this study, experiments were performed to investigate the shape and configuration of fins affecting on the performance of the conventional fin-and-tube type heat exchanger equipped in a commercial air conditioners. The geometry similtude method was employed to measure the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop. Experimental results show that this method is very useful to analyze the heat transfer characteristics of the fin-and-tube type heat exchanger. It is also found that the slit fin has better performance than the conventional fin type in the air conditioners. The present results indicate that heat transfer from the fin si influenced by the parameters such as the forming area of the slit fin, the type of interrupted surfaces like a louver or slit, slit patterns and slit raised direction, and it also affects the overall heat exchanger performance.

  • A distribution photometer was constructed to measure the angular distribution of luminous intensity of light sources and the reflected luminance of retroreflectors. This system incorporates a goniometer to rotate test light source(360 degree in yaw rotation and $\pm$30 degree in pictch rotation), a photomultiplier tube as light detector, light projector for retroreflection measurements, and the control and display unit. The ranges of luminous Intensity measurements and observation angles are 0.01~199900 cd and 0.2~1.5 degree respectively. The uncertainty of luminous intensity measurements is $\pm$3%. This paper describes the construction of the distribution photometer and the performance characteristics.

  • Owing to the Corona virus (COVID-19) crisis, virtual education has been expanded. Accordingly, this study was conducted to determine the direction of oral health education by examining participants' satisfaction with virtual education and educational media preferences. This study collected data from a Naver Form online survey targeting 290 university students across the country, from May 10 to 31, 2021. The collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS 20.0. According to the data, satisfaction with virtual classes was 3.36 points in 5-point Likert scale, satisfaction factors were reduced commuting time and money expenditure, and the highest dissatisfaction factor was a decrease in lecture concentration. The media platform that most interested students pursing oral health education was YouTube. The oral health education that participants wished to receive through virtual education included how to prevent tooth decay, how to prevent gum disease, and how to brush teeth. In conclusion, it is necessary to develop various media like Zoom, YouTube, and virtual reality programs so that students feel motivated to utilize oral health education and improve oral health.

  • The digestive apparatus and food of the Korean bitterling, Acheilognathus signifer, from the upper reaches of the Hongcheon River were investigated by examining their gill rakers, pharyngeal teeth, and digestive-tube contents. Gill rakers of the first arch were relatively few (17 to 21, mean = 19) and short (mean = 0.36 mm, SD = 0.035). The 2nd to 5th pharyngeal teeth were well developed, while the first tooth was poorly developed. Gill rakers and pharyngeal teeth were completely formed early in life. The digestive tube was long and arranged in many coils. The digestive-tube contents of Korean bitterling mainly consisted of phytoplankton and detrital microorganisms.

  • This study shows the defect detection and sizing capability of ultrasonic guided waves in the nondestructive inspection of heat exchanger and steam generator tubing. Phase and group velocity dispersion curves for the longitudinal and flexural modes of a sample Inconel tube were presented for the theoretical analysis. EDM(Electric Discharge Machining) wears in tubing under a tube support plate and circumferential laser notches in tubing were detected by an axisymmetric and a non-axisymmetric transducer set up, respectively. EDM wears were detected with L(0, 2), L(0, 3) and L(0, 4) modes and among them L(0, 4) mode was found to be the most sensitive. It was also found that the flexural modes around L(0, 1) mode could be used for the detection and sizing of laser notches in the tubing.

  • Fuses are used to protect electric circuits or devices from excess current. Glass-tube fuses are typically used, but problems have arisen due to the mandated switch from conventional solder to lead-free solder. This study used CFD to simulate the phenomenon of molten solder being poured out of a fuse during the soldering process for a fuse cap and fuse element. In addition, a method is proposed to prevent solder from overflowing, and its effectiveness was verified based on the analysis results. The results show that a sufficient increase of the temperature inside the glass tube before soldering and gravity can help to prevent the solder from overflowing.
