Proxy data in the historical period in Japan since the 9th century has been first described and their analyzed fluctuation series were shown. Secondly, the climatic records before and after the Meiji restoration in 1868 were mentioned. Thirdly, available date sets of historical climatic records in Japan are listed. Lastly, published records and tables for Japan during the recent years were overviewed. Some discussion on the climatic records and tables is given as concluding remarks.

The What-If-Not strategy as proposed by Brown & Walter (1969) is one of the most effective strategies for problem posing. However, it has focused only on the aspect of algorithms for generating problems. The aim of this strategy and how it is used to accomplish the aim of the challenging phase are not clear. We need to clarify the aim of the What-If-Not strategy and to establish the process of the strategy for accomplishing the aim. The purpose of this article is to offer a new What-If-Not strategy by clarifying the aim of the challenging phase.

A review is made of transient phenomena ralation to flow in the vadose zone. Reviewed topics include rapid water table response to rainfall, pulsating flow due to pressure perturbations in the vasoes zone, and the wave-like propagation of increased soil moisture caused by intermittent rainfall. As a basis of interpreting these phenomena, zoning of the vadose zone into a residual water zone, an unsaturated capillaty zone, and a saturated capillary zone are proposed. Possible implications with respect to hydrological processes relating to these phenomena are discussed.

It is well known that there exist no closed minimal surfaces in a 3-dimensional Euclidean space R$^{3}$. Myers [4] generalized the result to the case of the higher dimension and proved that there are no closed minimal hypersurfaces in an open hemisphere. The complete and non-compact version concerning Myers' theorem is recently considered by Cheng [1] and the following theorem is proved.

New platinum chain compounds, $[M(en)_2]_{0.80}[Pt(ox)_2]{\cdot}2H_2O$ where M = Cu or Pt, en = ethylenediamine and ox = oxalate, have been prepared and found to have a commensurate Peierls structure as evidenced by the five-fold Pt chain periodicity and unusually low electrical conductivity $(1.5{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}5.7{\times}10^{-3}S/cm)$. Including two other compounds with the Peierls structure, their characteristic features were deduced and explained from the point of view of the band theory.

In this paper we study magnetic trajectories on ℍ³ × ℝ with respect to the strictly almost Kähler structure. We find three types of magnetic curves which correspond to the almost complex structure compatible to the product metric on ℍ³ × ℝ.

1979년 8월 9일 축파연구학원도시를 견학할 기회를 가졌으며, 동경상야역에서 오전 9시 출발, 전차로 약 50분 토포역에 도착 택시로서 본 연구학원도시에 이르렀으며, 그 규모와 관발과정을 다음과 같이 전하고자 한다. 오후 5시까지 연구학원도시내의 각 시설물을 될 수 있는대로 많이 보려고 노력하였으나 워낙 방대한 시설로서 결국은 그 일부를 본것에 지나지 않음을 유감으로 생각한다. 이러한 새로운 도시를 건설하는데 있어서 계획의 진행, 움직이는 조직 기구, 연차계획 등은 참고가 될 것으로 본다.

Euglena gracilis abruptly changes its swimming direction after a sudden increase or decrease in incident light intensity, that is, step-up or step-down photophobic responses, resulting in photoavoidance or photoaccumulation, respectively. To identify the photoreceptor molecules for these UV-A/blue-light type photobehaviors, we purified a flavoprotein from isolated putative photosencory organelles (PFBs) of Euglena. The purified flavoprotein, which noncovalently bound flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), seemed to be a heterotetramer of alpha- and beta-subunits. Predicted amino acid sequences of each of the subunits were similar to each other and contained two FAD-binding domains each followed by an adenylyl cyclase catalytic domain. The purified flavoprotein actually showed adenylyl cyclase activity, being drastically elevated by blue-light irradiation. Suppression of gene expression of the flavoprotein (Photoactivated Adenylyl Cyclase, PAC) by RNA interference (RNAi) caused loss of the step-up photophobic response, demonstrating that PAC actually mediates photoavoidance of Euglena.
