  • In solving axisymmetric field problem by FEM, absorbing boundary condition is introduced to approximate the normal derivatives on artificial boundary to truncate the finite analysis legion. To verify this scheme eddy currents of an conducting sphere in an uniform magnetic field are calculated, and it shows better results than one with Neumann boundary condition. Also eddy currents of conducting cylinder surrounded by coils are calculated, which is typical model in induction heating system.

  • Distribution of Viola inconspicua is newly discovered in Korea. This species was collected from grassy fields and roadsides in Jeju-si and Seogwipo-si, Jejudo Island. V. inconspicua shares several characteristics (i.e., purple or pale purple flowers, triangular leaf blades, winged petioles, and a linear-lanceolate stipules) with the related species V. mandshurica and V. yedoensis. However, V. inconspicua can be easily distinguished from other species by the following characteristics: leaf base (cordate vs. truncate to attenuate), and spur (short, 2-4 mm long vs. longer, 5-8 mm long). Here, we describe and illustrate of V. inconspicua. In addition, the identification key to allied species, photographs in its habitat, distribution, ecology, and phenology are provided as well. The Korean name for the species is given as 'Hwa-sal-ip-je-bi-kkot', considering the shape of its leaves.

  • The genus and species, Diekeana insignis(Gorham), is reported for the first time in Korea. Male adults were collected from Geoje Island and Changwon-si, located in the southern part of South Korea. The species of D. insignis(Gorham) is characterized by the following morphological characteristics: body length about 9.4mm; pronotum with transverse black marking in the middle part; each elytron with seven large black markings; penis long, slightly bent at apical part, truncate at apex; parameres narrow and as long as penis guide; penis guide narrow and pointed at apex. We herein provide habitus photographs, illustrations of morphological characters, male genitalia, and a detailed diagnosis. A partial sequence of the mitochondrial COI gene was obtained and provided mtDNA information for this species.

  • The present paper deals with the results of the comparative morphology on the urohyal bones on the right-eye flounders, pleuronectidae fishes in Korean waters. The results obtained are as follows : 1. The position of the tip of sciatic part is quite different depending on the genera and species of the fishes. The sciatic part of the genera, Platichthys and Cleisthenes, is very short extending to the middle portion of the main part. In the fishes of Eopsetta and Tanakius, it is also very short extending to the anterior 1/3 of the distance from the tip of main part. The fishes of Verasper and Dexistes have a short sciatic part which extends toward the posterior 1/4 of the distance from the tip of main part. The fishes Of Limanda, Clidoderma, Glyptecephalus and Microstomus have a long sciatic part which extends as long as the main part. However, those of Kareius and Pleuronichthys have a very long sciatic part extending twice long as the main part. The tip of sciatic part of the fishes belonging to Eopsetta, Verasper, Limanda, Platichthys, Tanakius and Glyptocephalus is a truncate form. It is pointed upward in the fishes of Kareius, Pleuronichthys, Clidoderma and Microstomus, but pointed forward in Cleisthenes and Dexistes. 2. The size and form of the cardiac apophysis vary with the developmental grades of the urohyal bone. The fishes of Eopsetta, Verasper, Platichthys, Tanakius, Kareius and Dexistes possess relatively large apophyses and those of Pleuronichthys and Clidoderma have small apophyses. Intermediate size of the apophysis is found in the fishes of Limanda, Microstomus and Cleisthenes. A long and barlike apophysis is found in Glyptocephalus. Three kinds of the cardiac. apophysis are found in the fishes examined, i. e., lateral wing in Eopsette, Verasper, Limanda, Platichthys, Tanakius, Glyptocephalus, Kareius, Pleuronichthys and Clidoderma, pointed forward in Microstomus and Cleisthenes, and truncate with a well-developed inner ridge type in Dexistes. 3. The angle of the main part and sciatic part varies from 30 to 60 degrees in the fishes studied except for the fishes of Pleuronichthys, Clidoderma and Microstomus which show a semi-elliptical form.

  • 'Banafsha' is an important herbal drug of indigenous systems of medicine. Flowers of Viola odornta L. (Violaceae) are considered to constitute the genuine drug 'Banafsha'. However, due to limited distribution of this plant, another species of Viola, i.e. V. pilosa having almost similar medicinal properties, is mostly used under this vernacular instead. Ethnobotanically also different species of Viola i.e. V. odorata, V. pilosa and V. betonicifolia are used for various ailments at different places in our country. In the present study two species of Viola, namely V. pilosa and V. betonictfolia along with the commercial samples of 'Banafsha' were studied and authenticated. It was observed that the market samples procured from Dehradun, Mumbai, Lucknow, Palampur, Ramnagar and Ranikhet showed close resemblance with Viola pilosa in having similar morphological characters like uniseriate hairs on the ovary, geniculate and clavate style, truncate stigma and almost similar TLC profiles. On the other hand the Almora sample was identified as Viola betonicifolia by the presence of large purple flowers, clavate style and convex stigma forming hump like structure. However, the market sample procured from Pathankot was found to be a mixture of two species of Viola namely, V pilosa and V. odorata having dominance of the former species.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of Woohwangcheongsim-won and to study the mechanism for neuronal death protection in hypoxia with Embryonic day 20 (E20) cortical cells of a rat (Sprague Dawley). Methods: E20 cortical cells were dissociated in neurobasal media and grown for 14 days in vitro (DIV). On 14 DIV, Woohwangcheongsim-won was added to the culture media for 24 hrs or 72 hrs. On 17 DIV, cells were given a hypoxic shock and further incubated in normoxia for another three days. On 20 DIV, Woohwangcheongsim-won's effects for neuronal death protection were evaluated by LDH assay, propidium iodide stain and phospho-H2AX immunostain and the mechanisms were studied by Bcl-2, Bak, Bax, caspase family, PKCα, ca1pain I. Results & Conclusions : 1. This study indicated that Woohwangcheongsim-won's effects for neuronal death protection in hypoxia were confirmed by LDH assay, propidium iodide stain and phospho-H2AX immunostain in culture method of Embryonic day 20(E20) cortical neuroblasts. 2. Woohwangcheongsim-won's mechanisms for neuronal death protection in hypoxia are to reduce the membrane damage fraction, to restrain DNA truncate, to restrain inflow of cytochrome c into cellularity caused by Bak diminution, to reduce the caspase cascade intiator caspase-8 and the effector caspase-3, to reduce the calpain I activity and to increase PKCand its activity in the membrane fraction.
