  • As the quality of life improves, people want to live in more pleasant environment with beautiful trees, clean air and water. They are keenly interested in environmental issues as well as living environment of apartment which is a trademark of modern life. With this situation, the function and roles of landscaping trees have been recognized as a critical factor to improve living environment. As people have asked for more demands on those trees, it has raised more issues on the defect of trees and is required the solution to those issues. So, the purpose of this study was to survey the reasons of defects and find out those solutions. The data on defects in 1990s was referenced to the reports issued by SH Corporation in 1994 and 1997. The data on defects in 2000s are collected from March, 2006 to May 2006 based on the survey for apartments already constructed by Korea Housing Corporation. The results of the survey were shown that, in the year of 1994, landscaping trees causing high rate of defects were Acer buergerianum (92%), Pinus densiflora(85.7%), Celtis sinensis(80%), Cydonia sinensis(75%) and Diospyros kaki(66.6%), and in the year of 1997, landscaping trees causing high rate of defect were Ziziphus jujuba(100%), Cornus alba(65.2%), Diospyros kaki(60%), Thuja occidentalis(60%), and Metasequoia glyptostroboides(42%). And, in the year of 2006, landscaping trees causing high rate of defect were Sophora japonica(100%), Taxus cuspidata(80%), Magnoila quinquepeta (75%), Acer palmatum(62.5%) and Ginkgo biloba(50%). Because the reasons of defects were various according to the conditions including the climate, location, time and landscaping trees carried into the work area, we present the problems and solutions to those defects. Since the landscaping trees are living creatures, the factors of defects were various and complicated according to the site condition. So, in the period of warranty, contractor should designate the tree manger who can recognize the situation and take suitable action within timely manner.

  • Halo merger trees are essential backbones of semi-analytic models for galaxy formation and evolution. Recent studies have pointed out that extracting merger trees from numerical simulations of structure formation is non-trivial; different algorithm can give differing merger histories. Thus they should be carefully understood before being used as input for models of galaxy formation. As one of the projects proposed in the SUSSING MERGER TREES Workshop, we investigate the impact of different halo merger trees on a semi-analytic model. We find that the z = 0 global galaxy properties in our model show differences between trees when using a common parameter set, but that these differences are not very significant. However, the star formation history of the Universe and the properties of satellite galaxies can show marked differences between trees with different methods for constructing a tree. Calibrating the SAM for each tree individually to the empirical data can reduce the discrepancies between the z = 0 global galaxy properties, however this is at cost of increasing the differences in evolutionary histories of galaxies. Furthermore, the underlying physics implied can vary, resulting in key quantities such as the supernova feedback efficiency differing by factors of 2. Such a change alters the regimes where star formation is primarily suppressed by supernovae. Therefore, halo merger trees extracted from a common halo catalogue using different, but reliable, algorithms can result in a difference in the semi-analytic model, however, given the enormous uncertainties in galaxy formation physics, these are not necessarily significant.

  • This study was fulfilled to investigate the forest fire risk of forest fuels based on the combustion characteristics of living leaves of coniferous trees and broadleaf trees naturally growing in Youngdong areas of Gangwon Province by using cone calorimeter and smoke density chamber. According to the result, Pinus densiflora and Pinus rigida among coniferous trees released a greater amount of heat release than other kinds. The total smoke release varied depending on the species, whereas Pinus koraiensis showed the largest amount of smoke release. With regard to maximum smoke density, it was much higher in coniferous trees than in broadleaf trees. With regard to smoke temperature, Pinus densiflora showed the lowest compared to other kinds up until 200s from the ignition, but all most trees uniformly maintained constant temperature of about $70^{\circ}C$ after 200s. The concentrations of CO and $CO_2$ release were drastically increased at about 150s and then gradually decreased thereafter. Pinus densiflora showed a bit higher CO release than broadleaf trees, but there was no distinct difference in $CO_2$ release among tress.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest how to manage healing forests. Field investigation and surveys were conducted to produce results and 313 questionnaires collected from workers in the forestry sector and ordinary people were analyzed. The results were as follows: it is required to preserve flowering plants, scenic trees, and ecological trees in the understory vegetation, and to remove trees that block the forest landscape, leaving about 50 to 60 percent of the understory vegetation. The preferred density order of broadleaf trees was analyzed as follows: Betula platyphylla > Liriodendron tulipifera > Quercus acutissima. The preferred density order of coniferous trees was analyzed as follows: Abies holophylla > Cryptomerias japonica and Chameacyparis obtusa > Larix kaempferi > Pinus densiflora > Pinus koraiensis. The preferred density in healing forests was 81-89% compared to the number of residual trees for quantitative thinning. Specifically, the preferred density were 87% for P. koraiensis, 86% for L. kaempferi, 81% for P. densiflora, 83% for C. japonica, 84% for C. obtusa and 89% for Q. acutissima. In the case of healing forests, it is recommended to periodically conduct a small-scale thinning with different densities according to the species and diameter of trees based on the results of this study.

  • Fire blight is a bacterial disease caused by Erwinia amylovora. In Korea, fire blight was first reported in 2015 in an orchard. If the infection is confirmed, all trees in the orchard must be removed and the orchard must remain closed for 3 years. Since 2020, if the number of trees infected with fire blight is less than 5% of the total trees in the orchard, only the infected tree and adjacent trees are removed in Korea. Three years after removal, the trees can be replanted after confirming that the orchard soil is free from E. amylovora. In this study, a protocol was established for detecting E. amylovora in soil via selective enrichment, using tryptic soy broth with 0.05% bile salts and 50 ㎍/ml cycloheximide, and real-time polymerase chain reaction. This protocol resulted in a 1,000-times improved detection limit for E. amylovora in soil samples compared to that in unenriched samples. Soil monitoring was performed for orchards where fire blight-infected trees had been removed 3-27 months prior; the selected orchards were monitored every 3 months. Monitoring confirmed that E. amylovora was not present in the soil at any site in any of the orchards. A new detection protocol facilitates the monitoring of E. amylovora in soil and could help permit the replanting of trees in orchards. Also monitoring results provide evidence that trees can be planted earlier.

  • Generally, trees lining the streets are the most easily accessible green areas in the city and constitute the smallest basic unit in the formation of the urban linear green axis. This study attempts to interpret issues related to city trees from a comprehensive and relational viewpoint. The site of this study is Central Park Street in front of Incheon Metropolitan City Hall. This street is representative of those in Incheon City. This study is an inter-relational interpretation of issues by measuring the vitality of these trees. The following are results of this study: First, the vitality of city trees is higher in those trees growing in natural ground than those growing in plant gratings. This observation can lead to budget savings and increased natural areas in the city. Also, if planter and multi-layering planting methods are introduced where damage to trees is predicted, variation to urban landscape can be achieved while linking to reinforced rearing foundation of street-side trees. Second, there is need for a holistic approach to caring for street-side trees regarding the damage caused by drastic pruning and strong street lights. The typical functions of these trees, like supplying freshness in summer, absorbing solar radiation, and controlling the urban micro-climate are closely related to the vitality of the trees. Accordingly, the function and ecology should be understood holistically, not separately. In this aspect, the functional and ecological use of the multi-layering planting method is effective in protecting pedestrians from vehicles as well. Third, the fallen leaves of monotonous rows of trees have different ecological and functional effects. Not only is the index of greenness in the urban setting increased, but there are also aesthetic and symbolic effects. Fourth, in spite of being the street along which Incheon Metropolitan City Hall, major administrative buildings and Central Park are located, this street does not have its own special identity to discriminate it from other streets. It fulfills only functional criteria based on uniformity. If there is no paradigm shift from today's street system based on vehicles, the role of landscape architecture will be very passive in regards to street-side trees, the minimum unit of urban green. Fifth, on this particular street, many trees were planted in December, which reflects a deficiency of short and long-term strategy, like a street-tree master plan. In this aspect, we still lack a mature culture concerning these trees as a basic unit in urban greenery. Furthermore, there needs to be cultural introspection concerning present administrative practices.

  • Though it is not easy for those who study dendrology to memorize all the scientific names of trees, the names remaines in their memory can facilitate the understanding of foreign technical books. The scientific name of a tree indicates characteristics of shape, color, and other aspects of the tree and by analyzing the name we can see common element found in other scientific names of trees. It is helpful to those who want to memorize and study the scientific names of trees if they understand their etymology. The preseut study is the seconds report of the investigation which aims at examining the etymology of the scientific names of native and foreign trees growing in Korea and their original names not only at the habitat but in Japan, China, England, Germany, and France. While the first report, which was made known in Theses Vol. 9. (The City College of Seoul 1975), is the examination of the scientific names of trees belonging to Gymnospermae, the present report is that of scientific names of trees belonging to Piperales: 2 families, 2 genera and 2 species; and trees belonging to Salicales: 1 family, 3 genera, 44 species, 16 varieties, and 3 forms. As the etymology of the scientific names of trees is made clear, this study will help those who want memorize the scientific names and study foreign technical books and it is also useful for international interchange of trees. The classification is depended chiefly on Dendrology by Prof. Lee Tchang-bok and "Plant Resources of Korea" shown in Biblography No. 10; the native names of trees on Jumoku Daizusetsu by Dr. Uehara; and etymology on A source-Book of Biological Names and Terms by E.C. Jager. In the column of etymology of the scientific names for genera, species, varieties and forms, Gr. stands for Greek, L. for Latin, NL. for New Latin, and genit. for genitive.
