Effects of the Knife-Incising and Longitudinal Kerfing Treatment on High-Temperature Drying Characteristics of Red Pine Square Timber (배할 및 자상-인사이징 처리가 소나무 정각재의 고온건조 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to confirm the effects of the knife-incising and longitudinal kerfing treatment on high-temperature drying characteristics of red pine square timber with dimensions of thickness 15 cm. The range of final moisture content was investigated 5.6% to 7.5% after drying. The differences did not exist in the moisture content and distribution according to the pretreatment condition. In the case of longitudinal kerfing treatment, the surface check occurrence was reduced than the control. In addition, the twist had a tendency to decrease due to the longitudinal kerfing treatment. The knife-incising and longitudinal kerfing treatment were investigated to be ineffective on internal checks and drying shrinkage.

Aqueous Chlorine Dioxide Treatment Decreases Microbial Contamination and Preserves Sensory Properties of Mackerel During Storage

  • Effect of aqueous chlorine dioxide ($ClO_{2}$) treatment on quality change of mackerel during storage was examined. Mackerel treated with 0, 5, 10, and 50 ppm of $ClO_{2}$ solution, respectively was stored at $4^{\circ}C$. $ClO_{2}$ treatment decreased populations of aerobic bacteria in mackerel during storage. The number of total aerobic bacteria of mackerel treated with 50 ppm $ClO_{2}$ increased from 2.45 to 3.44 log CFU/g after 9 days of storage, while that of the control increased from 3.47 to 4.72 log CFU/g. The pH values of mackerel increased during storage, with no significant changes among treatments. Volatile basic nitrogen values of mackerel were decreased by $ClO_{2}$ treatment. Quality of mackerel treated with $ClO_{2}$ was better than that of the control during storage based on sensory evaluation. These results indicate that aqueous $ClO_{2}$ treatment could be useful for improving the microbial safety and qualities of mackerel.

  • As emission gas regulation of deisel vehicles is strengthened to Euro-6, It becomes difficult to deal with NOx regulated value mainly by EGR without additional after-treatment system. In addition, RDE(Real Driving Emissions) test will be introduced after september 2017. Therefore, It is essential to develop the after-treatment of diesel vehicles which reduce NOx emissions. It is possible to use DOC, DPF, LNT or DOC, DPF and SCR as a after-treatment system for reducing NOx. However, It is expected that the SCR will be applied widely because LNT alone does not have sufficient NOx purification efficiency. In this study, It tried to analyze the efficiency of reducing NOx emissions during the mode test by attaching a NOx sensor to test vehicle. As a result, It was confirmed that NOx emissions was significantly reduce through the after-treatment system from engine. And the NOx reduction efficiency of SCR was about 4.5 times better than DOC, DPF.

A Study on the Influence of a Sewage Treatment Plant's Operational Parameters using the Multiple Regression Analysis Model

  • In this study, the influence of the control and operational parameters within a sewage treatment plant were reviewed by performing multiple regression analysis on the effluent quality of the sewage treatment. The data used for this review are based on the actual data from a sewage treatment plant using the media process within the year 2012. The prediction models of chemical oxygen demand ($COD_{Mn}$) and total nitrogen (T-N) within the effluent of the 2nd settling tank based on the multiple regression analysis yielded the prediction accuracy measurements of 0.93 and 0.84, respectively; and it was concluded that the model was accurately predicting the variances of the actual observed values. If the data on the energy spent on each operating condition can be collected, then the operating parameter that conserves energy without violating the effluent quality standards of COD and T-N can be determined using the regression model and the standardized regression coefficients. These results can provide appropriate operation guidelines to conserve energy to the operators at sewage treatment plants that consume a lot of energy.

Reserpine treatment activates AMP activated protein kinase (AMPK)

  • Reserpine is a well-known medicine for the treatment of hypertension, however the role of reserpine in cell signaling is not fully understood. Here, we report that reserpine treatment induces the phosphorylation of AMP activated protein kinase (AMPK) at threonine 172 (T172) in PC12 cells. Phosphorylation of AMPK T172 is regulated by upstream signaling molecules, and the increase of phospho-T172 indicates that AMPK is activated. When we examined the FOXO3a dependent transcription by using the FHRE-Luc reporter assay, reserpine treatment repressed the FHRE-Luc reporter activity in a dose dependent manner. Finally, we showed that reserpine treatment induced the phosphorylation of AMPK as well as cell death in MCF-7 cells. These results suggest that AMPK is a potential cellular target of reserpine.

  • Reuse of wastewater will intensify in the coming decades due to water shortage, the change of climatic conditions, the need for industrial and agricultural use and the necessity of improving health and environmental conditions for the growing population. This paper considers (a) the status and trends of wastewater reuse and reclamation in the world, (b) case studies of wastewater reuse projects, (c) analysis of technology level, (d) forecast of global market, and (e) the future views and directions in development of wastewater reuse technologies. Based on the available documented literature, this paper provides a review assessment of the current status of the wastewater treatment processes including potential applications for reuse. Key challenges for both wastewater treatment and reuse are also discussed in the paper and include recommendations, e.g. cost, effluent water quality, energy use and technical solutions, for future developments.

The Effect of Varying Levels of Tryptophan on Growth Performance and Carcass Characteristics of Growing and Finishing Broilers

  • The purpose of this experiment was to study the effect of varying levels of tryptophan on the performance and carcass character of broiler. Trial 1: Ninety-six, five-week-old male Hubbard chickens, average weight 1.97 kg, were used in the trial. All birds were allocated into 3 treatments of 32 birds each. Each bird was kept in an individual cage. The trial period was 3 weeks. Treatment 1: Tryptophan content 0.198%. Treatment 2: Tryptophan content 0.228%. Treatment 3: Tryptophan content 0.258%. Trial 2: Ninety-six, three-week-old male Hubbard chickens, average weight 1.23 kg, were randomly distributed into the following two treatments. Each treatment had 48 birds. Treatment 1: Tryptophan content 0.167%. Treatment 2: Tryptophan content 0.198%. Trial 3: Ninety-six, twoweek-old Hubbard chickens, average body weight 0.72 kg, were used in this experiment. There were three treatments as follows. Treatment 1. Tryptophan content 0.136%. Treatment 2. Tryptophan content 0.167%. Treatment 3. Tryptophan content 0.198%. The result of Trial 1 showed that the feed intake, performance, and carcass characteristics were not influenced by tryptophan content in the diet which between 0.198% and 0.258% (p>0.05). There was no significant difference (p>0.05) in feed intake in either treatment in Trial 2. However, weight gain, feed conversion efficiency, and most carcass characteristics in the 0.198% treatment were significantly better (p<0.05) than in the 0.167% treatment. There was a trend that feed intake increased with increasing level of tryptophan, but there was no significant difference in Trial 3. The weight gain and feed conversion efficiency were significantly reduced for the broiler in the 0.136% treatment. This series of experiment showed that broilers need about 0.198% of tryptophan.

Effects of Soil Amendments and Planting Miscanthus sinensis on Salt Reduction and Growth Improvement in Substrate irrigated with High Concentration of Calcium Chloride Deicing Salts (염화칼슘 제설제 고농도 처리에 따른 토양개량제와 참억새 식재 처리가 염류저감 및 생육개선에 미치는 영향)

  • Contamination of soil by deicing salt is among the important environment problems due to their toxicity and negative impact to human health and the environment. One of the effective methods for cleaning the soil from deicing salts is desalination using soil amendment-phytoremediation continuum treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine how much of the pH, EC control and Ca2+, Na+, Mg2+, and K+ taken up soil amendments and Miscanthus sinensis, and to evaluate the effect of salt reduction and growth improvement as affected by soil amendment in high concentration of calcium chloride (CaCl2) deicing salts. Results indicated that the addition of soil amendments was decrease the EC and pH, also significantly reduce the leaching of Ca2+, Na+, Mg2+, K+, a chloride ions related deicing salts, compared to the control for CaCl2 10 g/L treatment. It also resulted in an enhanced plant growth and higher plant height, leaf length, leaf width, number of leaves, fresh weight and dry weight in Hydroball treatment + Miscanthus sinensis planting continuum treatment compared to the treatment that planted Miscanthus sinensis only. Therefore, we concluded that soil amendments might be attributed to an accumulation of deicing slats in the roadside soil, resulting in the improvement of Miscanthus sinensis growth.

Fabrication of Titanium alloy by Electromagnetic Continuous Casting (EMCC) Method for Medical Applications (전자기 연속 주조법을 이용한 의료용 타이타늄 합금 제작에 관한 연구)

  • Electromagnetic continuous casting (EMCC) was used to fabricate Ti-6Al-4V alloys with properties suitable for medical applications. Ti-6Al-4V alloy ingots fabricated by EMCC were subjected to heat treatment, such as residual stress removing (RRS), furnace cooling after solution treatment (ST-FC) and water-cooling after solution treatment (ST-WC), in order to obtain characteristics suitable for the standard. After component analysis, the microstructure and mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation) were evaluated by ICP, gas analysis, OM, SEM, a Rockwell hardness tester and universal testing machine. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy ingot fabricated by EMCC was fabricated without segregation, and the lamellar structure was observed in the RRS and ST-FC specimens. The ST-WC specimen showed only martensite structure. As a result of evaluating the mechanical properties based on the microstructure results, we found that the water-cooled heat treatment condition after the solution treatment was most suitable for the Ti-6Al-4V ELI standard.
