Recently, high speed of container freight cars is causing fatigue damage of wheel. Sudden failure accidents cause a lot of physical and human damages. Therefore, damage analysis for wheel prevents failure accident of container freight car. Wheel receives mechanical and thermal loads at the same time while rolling stocks are run. The mechanical loads applied to wheel are classified by the horizontal load from contact of wheel and rail in curve line section and by the vertical force from rolling stocks weight. Also, braking and deceleration of rolling stocks cause repeated thermal load by wheel tread braking. Specially, braking of rolling stocks is frictional braking method that brake shoe is contacted in wheel tread by high breaking pressure. Frictional heat energy occurs on the contact surface between wheel tread and brake shoe. This braking converts kinetic energy of rolling stocks into heat energy by friction. This raises temperature rapidly and generates thermal loads in wheel and brake shoe. There mechanical and thermal loads generate crack and residual stress in wheel. Wetenkamp estimated temperature distribution of brake shoe experimentally. Donzella proposed fatigue life using thermal stress and residual stress. However, the load applied to wheel in aforementioned most researches considered thermal load and mechanical vertical load. Exact horizontal load is not considered as the load applied to wheel. Therefore, above-mentioned loading methods could not be applied to estimate actual stress applied to wheel. Therefore, this study proposed safety estimation on wheel of freight car using heat-structural coupled analysis on the basis of loading condition and stress intensity factor.

Vehicle classification system in domestic tollgates is usually to use treadle sensor for calculating wheel width and tread of the vehicle. due to the impact that occurs when the wheels of the vehicle contact, treadle sensor requires high durability. recently, KHC(Korea Highway Corporation) began operating high-speed lane for cargo truck. high-speed cargo truck generate more impact the design criteria of previous treadle. therefore, an increase in the maintenance and management costs of the treadle damage is concerned. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for obtaining optimal wheel width and tread using non-contact treadle sensor that been improved durability from physical impacts. for the verification of the proposed algorithm, a field test was performed using 1/2/3/6 class vehicles based on the KHC's classification criteria. through this experiments, maximum error of the width and the tread is each ${\pm}2cm$ and ${\pm}8cm$, also the accuracy was measured as 98%, 97% or more, and proved that the proposed algorithm valid on to apply to the vehicle classification system.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to develop a three-wheel riding cultivator for improving the performance of the current four-wheel riding cultivators in the market. Methods: A prototype three-wheel riding cultivator with the rated power of 15.5-kW, a primary hydrostatic and a two-speed selective gear transmission shifts, front/rear three-wheel drive, a hydraulic wheel tread adjustment, and the mid-section attachment of the major implements was designed and constructed. Its specifications and basic performance are investigated. Results: The maximum speeds of the prototype at the low and high stages were measured to be approximately 7.31, and 11.29 km/h in forward travel, respectively, and approximately 3.60, and 6.37 km/h in rearward travel, respectively. The minimum ground clearance is shown to be 670 mm. The rotating speeds of the power takeoff (PTO) shaft at the low and high stages are shown to be approximately 795 and 1,140 rpm, respectively. The tread of the rear wheels, the minimum radius of turning, and the maximum lifting height of the parallel link device are measured to be within 1,320-1,720 mm, 2.80 m, and 390 mm, respectively. Approximately 25.3% and 74.7% of the total weight of the prototype are distributed in the front and rear wheels on flat ground, respectively. When the tread of rear wheels increased from 1,320 to 1,720 mm, the left and right static lateral overturning angles increased from $33.4^{\circ}$ to $39.1^{\circ}$ and from $29.0^{\circ}$ to $36.1^{\circ}$, respectively. Conclusions: The prototype three-wheel riding cultivator showed a wide range of travel and PTO speeds, high minimum ground clearance, small minimum radius of turning, and easy control of the rear wheel tread. Further, the easy observation of cultivating operations by mid-mounting the implements can improve quality of work. Therefore, the prototype is expected to contribute to the riding mechanization of cultivating operations for various upland crops in Korea.
The role of brake is safely to transport passenger & cargo and stop vehicles at emergency in railway vehicle. Brake system reduces the speed by control command of electricity or air. mechanical methods to perform brake are disk brake & tread brake. This study targeted development of highly efficient sintered alloy brake shoe in railway vehicle whose high frictional coefficient, wear resistance, compatibility of the existing tread brake shoe & minimization of wheel's thermal damage and performed development of friction material's formulation, analysis of pressure distribution in wheel tread & brake shoe, optimum form design through analysis of heat flow.
This paper presents the case studies on the friction related wears of an automotive tire, which is strongly connected to the safety and comfort of a driver during a running of a car. Wear scars of a tire tread are affected by various causes such as an air pressure, a wheel alignment, a driving speed, road conditions, starting and braking habits of a driver. The data were collected from used tires for a replacement at the car service center. Most of the wear problems came from the improper repair and adjustment of revolving components, which cause an unbalanced wear of a tread part of a tire. Thus, the regular checking of a tire radically reduces the wear scars of a tire and may increase a driving safety and a fuel economy of a car and a wear life of a tire.

Railway wheel and axle is the most critical components in railway system. A wheel and axle failure can cause a derailment with its attendant loss of life and property. The service conditions of railway vehicles have become severe in recent years due to a general increase in operating speeds. Therefore, more precise evaluate of wheelset strength and safety has been desired. Fracture mechanics characteristics such as dynamic fracture toughness, fatigue threshold and charpy impact energy with respect to the tread, plate, disc hole of wheel and the surface of press fitted axle are evaluated. This paper describes the difference of fracture toughness, fatigue crack growth and fatigue threshold at the locations of wheel and axle. The results show that the dynamic fracture toughness, $K_{ID}$, is obviously lower than static fracture toughness, $K_{IC}$ and the fracture mechanics characteristics are difference to the location of wheel tread and hole.
In this study, tensile and fatigue crack propagation tests machined from actual wheels were performed. FEM analysis also was performed on the crack that was assumed to be 15 mm in depth under the wheel tread surface. The stress intensity factors K I and K II at the crack tip under the stress($P_{max}=911.5MPa$) due to a rolling contact were analyzed for crack growth characteristics. As a result, the perpendicular crack was found to be more dangerous compared to the parallel one. It is found that in the wheel fatigue crack, parallel to the wheel tread surface, the crack with its length 2a = 2.4mm starts to propagate due to the fact that the effective stress intensity factor access to the threshold stress intensity factor($K_{th}=16.04MPa{\sqrt{m}}$) of the wheel.

It is said that the effect in wheels of freight car varies with the type of freight, the condition of operation, the braking device, and the type of bogie. The hardness of open wagon, gondola car, propylene car, covered freight car, container car and hopper car has been measured according to the mileage through this research. As a result, the wheel with more mileages after shaving off the wheel tread has a higher hardness than the others in the case of same type of car.

The AVC System which has operated in Highways has two-piezo sensors. In this system the piezo sensors are installed on parally each other this configuration has a defect about diversion driving and sensor damage. In this reserch, 3-Sensor AVC algorithm has been proposed which is supported enhance accuracy of the vehicle classification rate compare with usual 2-Sensor systems. This algorithm is allowed to calculate wheel tread, wheel width. The third inclinded piezo sensor can detec twheel tread, wheel width using signal processing. 3-Sensor AVC has been installed in real highway and the outcome performance has been proof.
