We determine the reduced mass of heavy-hole exciton and the heavy-hole in-plane mass for a series of (In, Ga)As/GaAs strained layer quantum wells using the magnetolu-minescence measurements of the exciton ground state and the modified perturbation approach. In the theoretical calculation of the magnetoexciton ground state, the exciton reduced mass is considered as an adjustable parameter, and two variation parameters are used in the unperturbed wave function which is expressed in terms of subband wave functions in the growth axis and the product of two-dimensional hydrogen and oscillator like wave functions for the in-plane component. We take into account the energy dependence of transverse and in-plane electron masses in the twoband effective mass approximation. The electron effective mass decreases as either quantum-well width or indium composition increases, and so does the heavy-hole in-plane mass down to the value at the decoupling limit ($m_{hh,\;{\rho}}=0.11m_0$).
The coupling between the transverse and longitudinal components of the channel electron motion in NMOS devices leads to a reduction in the barrier height. Therefore, this study theoretically investigates the effects of the in-plane velocity of channel electrons on the capacitance-voltage characteristics of nano NMOS devices under inversion bias. Numerical calculation via a self-consistent solution to the coupled Schrodinger equation and Poisson equation is used in the investigation. The results demonstrate that such a coupling largely affects capacitance-voltage characteristic when the in-plane velocity of channel electrons is high. The ballistic transport ensures a high in-plane momentum. It suggests that such a coupling should be considered in the quantum capacitance-voltage modeling in ballistic transport devices.

An exact solution procedure is formulated for the free vibration and buckling analysis of rectangular plates having two opposite edges simply supported when these edges are subjected to linearly varying normal stresses. The other two edges may be clamped, simply supported or free, or they may be elastically supported. The transverse displacement (w) is assumed as sinusoidal in the direction of loading (x), and a power series is assumed in the lateral (y) direction (i.e., the method of Frobenius). Applying the boundary conditions yields the eigenvalue problem of finding the roots of a fourth order characteristic determinant. Care must be exercised to obtain adequate convergence for accurate vibration frequencies and buckling loads, as is demonstrated by two convergence tables. Some interesting and useful results for vibration frequencies and buckling loads, and their mode shapes, are presented for a variety of edge conditions and in-plane loadings, especially pure in-plane moments.
In this study, the effect of in-plane deformations on the dynamic behavior of laminated plates is investigated. For this purpose, the displacement-time and strain-time histories obtained from the large deflection analysis of laminated plates are compared for the cases with and without including in-plane deformations. For the first one, in-plane stiffness and inertia effects are considered when formulating the dynamic response of the laminated composite plate subjected to the blast loading. Then, the problem is solved without considering the in-plane deformations. The geometric nonlinearity effects are taken into account by using the von Karman large deflection theory of thin plates and transverse shear stresses are ignored for both cases. The equations of motion for the plate are derived by the use of the virtual work principle. Approximate solution functions are assumed for the space domain and substituted into the equations of motion. Then, the Galerkin method is used to obtain the nonlinear algebraic differential equations in the time domain. The effects of the magnitude of the blast load, the thickness of the plate and boundary conditions on the in-plane deformations are investigated.
In this paper, H-polarized scattering problems by a resistive strip grating with zero resistivity at strip-edges over a grounded dielectric plane according to the strip width and grating period, the relative permittivity and thickness of a dielectric layer, and incident angles of a transverse electric (TE) plane wave are analyzed by applying the Fourier-Galerkin Moment Method (FGMM). The tapered resistivity of resistive strips has zero resistivity at strip edges, then the induced surface current density on the resistive strip is expanded in a series of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind as a orthogonal ploynomials. The sharp variations of the reflected power are due to resonance effects were previously called wood's anomallies, the numerical results for the reflected power are compared with those of uniform resistivity in the existing papers.
In this paper, H-polarized electromagnetic scattering problems by a resistive strip grating over a grounded dielectric plane according to the strip width and grating period, the relative permittivity and thickness of a dielectric layer, and incident angles of a TE (transverse electric) plane wave are analyzed by applying the FGMM (Fourier-Galerkin Moment Method). The tapered resistivity of resistive strips in this paper varies from finite resistivity at one edge to zero resistivity at the other edge, then the induced surface current density on the resistive strip is expanded in a series of Jacobi polynomials of the order ${\alpha}=1$, ${\beta}=0$ as a kind of orthogonal polynomials. The numerical results of the normalized reflected power show in good agreement with those of existing papers.

Purpose: Although previous studies on the screw-home movement (SHM) for autopsy specimen and walking of living persons conducted, the possibility of acquiring SHM based on inertial measurement units received little attention. This study aimed to investigate the possibility of measuring SHM for the non-weighted bearing using a micro-electro-mechanical system-based wearable motion capture system (MEMSS). Methods: MEMSS and camera-based motion analysis systems were used to obtain kinematic data of the knee joint. The knee joint moved from the flexion position to a fully extended position and then back to the start point. The coefficient of multiple correlation and the difference in the range of motion were used to assess the waveform similarity in the movement measured by two measurement systems. Results: The waveform similarity in the sagittal plane was excellent and the in the transverse plane was good. Significant differences were found in the sagittal plane between the two systems (p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the transverse plane between the two systems (p>0.05). Conclusion: The SHM during the passive motion without muscle contraction in the non-weighted bearing appeared in the entire range. We thought that the MEMSS could be easily applied to the acquisition of biomechanical data on the knee related to physical therapy.
Purpose: This study evaluated postoperative maxillary stabilities in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion who were taken both maxillary advancement surgery and mandibular retrusive surgery, using Le Fort I osteotomy, through three-dimensional computed tomography. Methods: We selected 14 patients who were taken postoperative three-dimensional computerized tomography at the time before surgery, immediately after surgery, six months after surgery among the patients undergone both maxillary advancement surgery using Le Fort I osteotomy and mandibular retrusive surgery using bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy. We measured and compared the vertical distance of A-point and posterior nasal spine (PNS), the horizontal distance of A-point and PNS in transverse plane and coronal plane of the three-dimensional reconstructed images, respectively. Results: In transverse plane, the distance difference between immediately after surgery ($S_1$) and immediately before surgery ($S_0$) of A-point was $-0.04{\pm}1.80$ mm, $S_2$ and $S_0$ was $-0.15{\pm}1.69$ mm, and between $S_1$ and $S_2$ was $0.11{\pm}0.58$ mm. There were no significant differences between these data (P>0.05). In transverse plane, the distance between $S_1-S_0$ of PNS was $-3.87{\pm}2.37$ mm, $S_2-S_0$ of PNS was $-3.79{\pm}2.39$ mm, and $S_1-S_2$ of PNS was $-0.08{\pm}0.18$ mm. There were significant differences between these data (P<0.05). In coronal plane, the distance between $S_1-S_0$ of A-point was $3.99{\pm}0.86$ mm, $S_2-S_0$ was $3.57{\pm}1.09$ mm, and $S_1-S_2$ was $0.42{\pm}0.42$ mm. There were significant differences between these data (P<0.05). In coronal plane, the distance between $S_1-S_0$ of PNS was $3.82{\pm}0.96$ mm, $S_2-S_0$ was $3.43{\pm}0.91$ mm, and $S_1S_2$ was $0.39{\pm}0.49$ mm. There were significant differences between these data (P<0.05). In transverse plane, it was estimated that PNS has no statistical postoperative stability in the same direction. In coronal plane, it was estimated that both A-point and PNS had no statistical postoperative stability (P<0.05). Conclusion: Clinically, the operation plan needs to take into account of the maxillary relapse.
In order to properly evaluate the shear strength of reinforced concrete circular columns due to the transverse shear reinforcement, the average of fractions of forces generated along the circular transverse hoops across the shear failure plane in the loading direction is calculated. For this, the center-to-center diameter of circular transverse hoops. spacing and the crack angle measured to the column longitudinal axis are considered. Using these variables, an equation representing the effective section area of circular transverse shear steel is proposed. The study result shows that the constant parameter. used for the calculation of the effective section area of circular hoops over the last 10 years, should not universally be applied any more. The use of the constant parameter may not seriously do harm to the evaluation of shear strength for circular columns with non-seismically designed transverse hoop reinforcement, since it gives slightly conservative results. However. for well-confined circular columns with close spacing or circular steel jacketing. it gives about 20% overestimation of the shear capacity contributed by the transverse hoop steel.
For high performance and structural stability, application of high strength steel has continuously increased. However, the change of the base metal gives rise to problems with the accuracy management of the welded structure. It is attributed to the martensite phase transformation of the high strength low alloy steel weldment. The purpose of this study is to establish the predictive equation of transverse shrinkage and residual stress for the HY-100 weldment. In order to do it, high speed quenching dilatometer tests were performed to define a coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) at the heating and cooling stage of HY-100 with various cooling rates. Uncoupled thermal-mechanical finite element(FE) models with CTE were proposed to evaluate the effect of the martensite phase transformation on transverse shrinkage and residual stresses at the weldment. FEA results were verified by comparing with experimental results. Based on the results of extensive FEA and experiments, the predictive equation of transverse shrinkage and longitudinal shrinkage force at the HY-100 weldment were formulated as the function of welding heat input/in-plane rigidity and welding heat input respectively.
